All this stupid debate is disrespectful to the amazing machines and pilots who fought in this war. The ME-262 was an amazing, revolutionary aircraft, and the P-51 was a perfect "go-to" aircraft that fit its role amazingly well. This clip, however, is about a crazy gambit that actually worked against the odds, showing the pilot's ingenuity.

Sorry, but pick up ANY book written about WW2 and look up where the German army had 80 percent of all their casualties during WW2. It was on the eastern front.

The ME262 did have some limitations. It only had so much fuel with a short time in flight and it was vulnerable on takeoff and landing. Some were shot down by P51's on take off and landing.

No offense but that was pretty dumb move to dive almost HEAD ON towards the Me-262. It has 4 30 mm cannons. P-51's .50 cals are like toy guns compared to them. Why would you go nearly head on with aircraft that is far superior in armament?

Actually there is only one recorded instance of Russian fighters attacking Mustangs in WWII. Near Berlin in 1945. Four Russians shot down for the loss of no Mustangs. Sorry, Stalin. That's the way it was. Your pilots were quite inferior. Still are.

You should also know the USA and the Brits killed about ten million Germans in the strategic bombing of Germany. His capability of rising was better than the ME109, his speed were higher which was an advatage these days!

- My Grandpa was a pilot of the ME 109 and later on he flew the ME 262 these days and what he told me about his experiances during the many airfights were astonishing!

If you'd read my other posts on the P51s, you'd know it was my favourite ww2 fighter growing up & I credit it with taking the war to the Luftwaffe bases so that we could exploit the weakness of destroying these planes on the ground, taking off & landing.

Drew managed to shot down 2 me 262 in a single mission on october 1944? for obvious reasons (jet engines) the me 262 was better than the mustang but even that didnt saved some of them to get shot down by mustang pilots

I suggest you read some actual ww2 air-war historians like Edward Sims of "The Aces Talk" series who interviewed veterans of both sides. US Dpt Cmdr 352 John Meyers & his P51Ds had the most US experience vs Me262s in the air & he wrote the Me262 had such a combination of speed & agility it would always have the initiative & could eventually maneuver outside gun range to be in killing zone of P51. He wrote 8 P51s would match an Me262. ALL veteran interviews I've read corroborated by authors agree

In "The Greatest Aces" they also have interviews of such greats like JC Meyers, the 4th highest scoring American Ace in the European Theatre, who literally wrote the books on air-to-air combat, wrote that altho the Me262 shouldn't be able to out-turn the P51D given the data we use, in practise they did. His 8 P51s were out-turned by an Me262 & only when he put 4 on each side of a crippled B17 were they able to dissuade 262.

I was talking about the P-51 Mustang when the pilot released the external fuel tanks, but I have to admit that the Me 262s pilots were very smart to throw off the Mustang aim that way.

Begin a roll, pull the stick and shoot down easly from top one of them. They would still had to change course to protect themselfs (if ever managed to), and P-51 wouldn't need to loose valuable fuel. Alternatively perform a lead turn, since german diving changes absolutely nothing.

ummm I think your forgetting about the rate of closure that was just a few seconds. That and the alt difference being so small that if what you suggested was done he would either crash into or shoot past the Me-262s and the would be free and clear to engage.
