Nobody said this was meant to replace any of the traditional WC forms. The people who came up with this (Ip Ching & his students) didn't add anything new...all this is is a showcase form with bits & pieces from the traditional forms. It's not meant to change or modify the traditional system in any way, nor does it. It's just a fun little form for demonstrations, & lets you work principles from the entire system in one little exercise.
I give respect to anyone who travels down the W.C. path. So, I give whoever created this, "4th Form", their respect for investing years in studying a very complex, and effective martial way. As we all do, or should do, they have attempted to make this system their own, and I say let them have that. We all have our own way, and with respect to all students, sifu's, masters, and grand masters, none of us are perfect. If it works, do it, if not, don't. Respect.
The original creator(s) of Wing Chun were human, not infallible... but dont forget what era they lived in.
Back then, martial arts aptitude can be the main deciding factor between life and death...
So to see ppl whose angles and body positions deviate so much from what is generally considered 'right' in traditional Wing Chun forms try to create a 4th form by allegedly combining elements from the main forms in Wing Chun is simultaneously laughable and insulting...
This... is... just sad. I try and I try to not criticize... but... This is just too wrong not to comment. Yes, the fingers! Snap. Snap! The bouncing! Are they on trampolines? The utter lust for attention! Look at me, I made up a form!! I'm on a stage, too, so I must be famous! whoo hoo! Look Ma, no ma!! Posture? Who needs it? Well I hope they enjoyed the glory. Because now they have lifetime of shame for it.
As I said WCK is very good but not perfect, so anyone can add in some postures and movements, or devise another forms to enhance its effectiveness. I am happy to see any smarter guys who are able to do this. I see that the so called fourth form not only can not achieve this purpose, but is in a way similar to a chinese saying " you add four legs to a snake in a drawing.". For the purpose of giving a taste to the spectators, one should add in movements from various schools of kungfu.
What is the point of mixing up the forms to make a new one. The different forms have different philosophies. Do you think you are smarter than the person who devised WCK? WCK is very good but not perfect. There is rooms for development like everything. Mixing up the forms is not improvement or further development. Also,WCK is not for performance. It is like a fair lady whose inner beauty is for her admireres to appreciate. If you appreciate her beauty ,you won'tchange her that way.
Here's the point: The normal forms can look kind of dry if you don't understand them, and there's stuff in CK & BJ that isn't readily apparent in SLT. That being the case, if you want to come up with a routinized demonstration of WC, why not mix up stuff from the other 3 forms into a demonstrative one?
Every move in that form is from the other 3...there's nothing that contradicts anything else in WC, so what's the problem?
It's just to give spectators a taste. Not a big deal.
As I said, WCK is not for performance. SLT is for the purpose of building a stable and firm structure. CK for moving your body as a whole. BJ for achieving more speed and herefore more power. So the fourth form is for performance. Please re-read the first sentence for what I mean.
One more thing: The people who made up WC in the 1st place were just that: people. They weren't gods. WC wasn't handed down from on high. Why couldn't whoever came up with this "4th form" be smarter than the originator(s) of the system?
The person or persons devised WCK had a very good knowlege on how to produce great power through properly co-ordinating one's body. The 3 forms are a step by step training to achieve the purpose. For performance purpose, one may devise the fourth, fifth, sixth,...forms.
i hope that whoever made up this new form to please dont change the forms around b/c not only is it mistakenly changed, but also is something wrong to do.
Ip Ching made it. Now, remember the words of his father when Ip Ching changed the Biu Jee form with his style of punching...Ip Man said to him, "If it goes with the principles and you can get others to agree with you, then I don't see a problem with it."
It was created as a competition form and not meant to replace the other forms at all though
It should be kept in mind that there are many different families of WC out there that expresses themselves differently, especially the forms. That should at least be respected. In its deepest sense, one cannot confine him/herself within the only thing the mainstream shows. With that said, in this video, I see 3 forms in 1, with added applications and drills; this so-called 4th form.
Why bother? When you practise the techniques individually and its variations you already develop your own forms. Why take bits and pieces from original forms and called it the 4th form. I find it ridiculous to be honest.
Learning Wing Chun Kung Fu has helped me to understand how to gather energy and I have been able to use this energy or Chi to help the body to heal. The Difference is I actually understand how the healing takes place at the cell level thanks to my Father Dr C. Samuel West. and the Free Lessons now you can to.
this is a made up form for whatever reason of the 3 empty hand forms of yip man wing chun, sil lim tau, chum kui & bui gee wrongly demonstrated but adapted for the show,so yes i know my history thank you.
if they put that into practice they would always lose hands striking too high & wide, overdoing the waist & since when do you do WC with open fingers ??!! it`s crap!!
mmhh, im always told that movements should be led by the elbow and go over the center, but here these guys' elbows are almost at their side. maybe someone has an explanation for me, cause im new to wing chun ;-)
what you were told is the norm for WC. movements should be led by elbows, and no bobbing up and down either. the punch should not be powered by the fist, but the elbow which is connected to the hips and knee caps.
naw, i know they are including biutze elbows, i can see that, i am actually talking about when they punch or do other things, sometimes, their shoulders and bodies bob up and down ever so slightly, as though they are desparate to generate power through such means. check it out again, you'll see.
'WC doesn't raise the body when hitting like these guys." Yes it does! There are many moves in the MYJ form that incorporate the slight up or down moves. In the third section when you apply double palm strikes, one should sink when hitting low, extend when hitting high. Also in 7 section, one should apply the Seung Weng Jeung with body extending upward! To make an erroneous statement like that shows your ignorance in WC! Who ever sifu taught you did not learn right! =(
As far as I know, there are 3 forms, Siu Lum Tao, Chum Kiu, and Bui Tze, & a pole form, and the dummy set. I don't recall any form that has MYJ in it. Here is what I was taught, head up like a string pulling to Heaven, Shoulders & tummy relaxed and down as much as possible, elbows in, chest relaxed and not rising or out. Leung Sheung methodology sir.
sorry to all who will be offended. my opinion, this is utter nonesense. who cares about tournaments. go do karate or tkd if your ego is that hungry for trophies. but leave WC's 3 distilled forms alone. WC is not made to be pretty, not for spectators. also, WC doesn't raise the body when hitting like these guys. man this is disappointing to watch.
i totally agree, I chose that style especially for that reason, the simple effective way, and not how it looks or for i could show my friends some cool kicks and stuff. and now they start to do competitions with wing chun. really not my taste. hope i dont have to change my sport. ;)
Man, people need to relax.

Wing Chun Competitive Form (4th Form) - 詠春摘要 - Ip Man
演練者把整套拳打得過於硬朗和緊張!
失去了長橋發勁、柔中有剛、剛中帶柔的特色!
