What a WHITEWASH job that was!! These cars are sooo dangerous it is bordering on CRIMINAL NEGLECT for ANY goverenment to permit their ongoing use / registration FOR ANY USE. Maybe the shells could be reused for motorsport AFTER fitting gussets and cages, and doubleplating, AND [wait - WHY BOTHER??] , NO, ... -CRUSH them and make sardine cans or SOMETHING USEFUL...
SEE: crash test commodore [1980's VB etc] Scarey stuff!!
The main problem was with the engine, and the gearbox, and the differentials, and the sealing, and the paint, and the electrics, and the bodywork.. Other than that - it was brilliant.
That's right. The Chevy Cavalier had airbags if I remember correctly. It was a horrid little car right from new. When we moved over here, we got a Commodore Calais V8 - I remember the dealer trying to sell dad a Camira... urghhh.. Dad said that it was sold in the US as a blah and the stupid dealer said something like - mate - this is an all Australian car and it's not made in septic land... We went to another dealer.
@tcpnetworks Good for your family going to another dealer. See, he did not know you had knowledge of the car. I liked that story. So you got the Calais V8 I assume..
Yep - VL Calais. We still have that car too. It's a keeper. It's also mint with only 45,000 on the clock. I've had Ford Falcons since I started buying cars - All V8's or 6T's The current car collection has my first car - an EBGT, an FPV GT-P and an F6. The F6 is used all the time (company car) whilst the GT-P is shedded and doesn't see the roads - it isn't even registered.
The Camira wagon's bodywork was exported to the UK for the Vauxhall Cavalier. NZ axed the Aussie Camira sedan and sold the Isuzu Aska as the JJ Camira
ROFL Superwagon! I think globally the J-cars were probably sold under more false pretenses than any other family of cars ever has been. Cadillac Cimmaron anybody?
super smoky camira, fords feel airy and like you're floating, holdens feel grunty and like your powering down a train track, i prefer the feel of the holden
General Motors New Zealand also shared your thoughts on the Camira at the time - the Camira's build quality proved so poor initially that in 1984 that they instead of the Australian product, they assembled the Japanese Isuzu Aska, and simply placed "Holden Camira" badges on it!
geeesh,,,,would hope that holden didn't try and flog off that camira back to a holden dealer after this ad was done.....Dad bought one new and I recall all the issues he had with it...hey!..they did flog it off back to the dealer!

The J body was used globally by GM. We had it in the US as:
Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac J2000,Sunbird, Sunfire, Oldsmobile Firenza, Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron.
It was also used at Opel and Vauxhall as well.
