One more point is alot of video's on Youtube saying Fullscreen vs. widescreen, look more like matte Widescreen not anamorphic, probably, because anamorphic look's horribly bad,you literaly see more Bar than film, and this look's more like matte widescreen also.
Widescreen is bullshit,if it's so great how come I watch film's,and people's elbow's are cut off, also, why the hell would I want big ass ugly black bar's on my tv just to supposedly see a extra inch or whatever on each side, and there's nothing good happening in that inch,so it should fit my damn screen, widescreen is beyond stupid,I alway's buy full screen I hate widescreen.I bet you this is rigged anyway's,but even if it isn't I still proved my point.Nothing good was happening on the sides.
i love widescreen & i have over 600 dvd's in that format the best place to get widescreen is best buy only because that is all they have vs hillbilly world wallmart they push & push fullscreen
@JMAN19851 Are you retarded anamorphic widescreen especially suck's! You like more Black bar than picture,on you'r TV! Walmart's WAY smarter than any dumbass,Best buy, they shouldn't even sell anamorphic widescreen like ever! All because some whiny ass director's are afraid they might have to pan left, and right here, and there,Boo frickin whoo, the truth is they're to lazy to make it Full screen nowaday's,and I'm not a Hillbilly,I'm intelligent, you are abviously dumber than dirt!
I noticed in a lot of movies directors knew their movies were going to be cropped so they focused a lot of the action in the center and left a lot of dead space on the sides of the original theatrical versions of films.
@Struckworld Black bar's suck more dick than Richard Simmon's,I don't buy a 50 inch TV to watch a 25 inch, also explain this to me,I bought the WIDESCREEN TV,and guess what there was still big ass ugly black bar's on my TV! I think you obviously hate getting you'r money's worth!
@cloudvol7 because ALL widescreen TVs have a 16:9 ratio, in widescreen thats 1:78:1, most films are filmed at a 1:78:1 or higher. Now if we make a tv to fit a 2:35:1 aspect ratio to get rid of the big black bars, then the movies shot on 1:85:1 (and theres alot of them) would have thick black bars side to side.
@Struckworld I have a big widescreen TV,and as many Full screen film's I can get away with,still the retarded bastards,force horrid widescreen on us,we don't have a choice,if I was a director,I'd say I want my film's Fullscreen,or possably widescreen matte format,never ever in a million year's anamorphic widescreen,because it's super horrid,on alot of TV's widescreen,and not,it look's horrible,you get more bar then picture,how the hell is that ever good,they can pan left,and right,I don't care.
@cloudvol7 well the black bars don't actually cover up the picture, you see the picture isn't tall enough to fit the TV so they use black bars to fill in the empty space
@Struckworld My Fullscreen film's don't have black bar's,on my widescreen TV,and I don't have to toy with my aspect ratio,on the TV remote to get rid of them, and if they cut of a little,I wouldn't care, they can pan left, and right I still wouldn't care, again I think anamorphic widescreen should be banned, matte is not too bad,and people nowaday's are to lazy to make Fullscreen movies, matte screen's the best we get,and widescreen TV's suck the width should match the heighth,as much as possable.
@cloudvol7 your fullscreen DVDs don't have black bars because your using a AV DVD Player, if you were using a Blu-Ray player or a DVD Player with HDMI cable, your fullscreen DVDs would have black bars side to side
@Struckworld Sound's like the Blu ray or HDMI player's suck! Also I don't think the problem is fullscreen or Full screen TV's,at all,on the contrary, the film shooting equipment should change, they should make it paletable for Fullscreen, and Fullscreen TV's,because Widescreen TV's Suck! And so does Widescreen, even if they finally fit it to screen,it would still suck! Because the TV's suck they are rectangles, and I've already explained why they suck!

@Struckworld I agree, with the making TV's to fit statement alot, but I also don't like widescreen T.V's much at all anyway's,because one you usually still get Black bar's on the T.V,and two that the height of the T.V's tend to suck, you get a great deal of width, but not much heighth,so if you have a 40 inch T.V,you feel like it's three smaller tv's hooked together, not a awesomely big,and more squared one.

I've seen a 'correct' 4:3 version of all these three films (also e.g. of the film 'Gladiator') here in Finland. At least twice. I took a screen capture of both widescreen and 4:3 versions, created an image where both captures are overlayed (both captures from same frame), to prove that when they filmed those movies & edited them, they have taken into account both aspect ratios. A 'correct' 4:3 version has way much more information at the top & bottom, than is shown in the widescreen version.
@a2Wanderer "A 'correct' 4:3 version has way much more information at the top & bottom, than is shown in the widescreen version."
How can 4:3 have more information, when a movie is made for 16:9 or higher? If you crop a 16:9 movie down to 4:3, then you will lose a lot of information. Letterboxes (the black bars) are made so you get more information, and you'll see the movie as the director intended.
@a2Wanderer Thats because its shot in a process called Super35. It allows the director to make a more pleasing 4:3 version in theory BUT you do get dead space, often at the bottom, AND it sometimes introduces mistakes. In Terminator 2 when she pierces Todd's head, it pans across in the 4:3 version and the green pad he is lying against on the counter is clearly visibile.
Even when shooting Super35, everything on the WIDESCREEN version is what they INTENDED you to see.
it sucks either ways. because a lot of shows are 4:3 yet the standard today is 16:9. you have to stretch the old 4:9 image to 16:9 and it just doesnt look good. you could keep the aspect ratio of a tv show to 4:3 on a 16:9 screen but then you get those black bars to the sides of the screen. annoying. if you were to go the extreme and actually buy a 2.39:1 tv screen to have this widescreen vrsn of the matrix fit the whole screen with no black bars you then wont be able to watch reg 4:3 tv shows.
Widescreen or letterbox is long but not wide (it's called "letterbox" because it looks like you're seeing the screen through a mail slot). Also, widescreen is always clearer in detail because the transmission is not stretched to fill a square screen. The first one is "pan and scan," while the second is widescreen.
I was thinking wasn’t The Matrix filmed as Super35 and just checked imdb! Super35 is in my opinion a lazy version of anamorphic scope 2.35:1 there is picture information below the frame that you’d see on panned and scanned versions. With genuine anamorphic lenses all the information is squeezed into a narrow image and then projected with special lens to un-squeeze it into (((Super Wide))) on the BIG SCREEN.
all you stupid motherfucker why they cant just make fucking movies to fill the fucking screen i hate to see fucking black bars on my big size hd tv.you pay for a big screen why almost every movies are widescrren thats shit
@514thebigboss Your HDTV is capable of 1.85:1, the black bars that you will see now when watching a movie are because the movie was recorded/produced in 2.35:1, which is ofcorse greater than 1.85:1. This is to give a cinematic experience. You could buy a HDTV which has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, this would remove the black bars when watching 2.35:1 content, however, when watching 16:9 or 4:3 programming, black bars would be at the left and right.
EVERYBODY!!! Look to the right of your screen There is a vid in related videos here that shows Blade Runner Pan&Scan vs Letterbox. Great comparison. No, I was not paid to advertise this. Look
Are there 2 different types of widescreen formats? I dont' get this? Because when I watch a movie on DVD like The Matrix it has the big black bars on top and bottom but when I watch the new episodes of The Office on TV it only has the small black bars on the top and bottom? is that widescreen too?
@fr0ggy2shoes The Office was recorded in 16:9, the Matrix was recorded in 2.35:1, both are widescreen. TV shows are recorded in 16:9, movies are usually recorded in 2.35:1. When viewing The Office on a 16:9 TV you shouldn't see black bars, when viewing The Office on a 4:3 TV you should. When viewing The Matrix on a 16:9 TV you should see black bars, this is because the image is too wide to fit the screen, same as watching it on a 4:3 screen
The Matrix is not really the best film for this example, because it was filmed in Super 35, as open matte format which compromises very little in the transition from widescreen to pan & scan. Try Ghostbusters. That film has excellent usage of an anamorphic 2.35:1 format.
The widescreen format is all a fraud, it is only sales strategy ...
This format appeared in films by the need for film producers to compete with television, it really such a long recording there, it really does is crop the image up and down or using a rectangular template on the lens camera to record the movie. I've seen several films and videos in widescreen and I have always found with many faces and objects cut from above and below.
@happyplaneta SOME widescreen is done by "cropping." This is known as open-matte. In these cases the movie is filmed on almost square film with a wide cinema screen in mind, and as a result things you're not supposed to see, like filming equipment and special effects can appear when watched with the mattes removed. Widescreen with anamorphic lenses, or with 70mm film, does not have mattes and when the film is "formatted to fit your screen," you actually lose approximately half the picture.

i watched this on my 32 inch fullscreen and chopped down widescreen monitors , the full screen is much better as its in your face ,love it ,widescreen is like watching the fullscreen chopped but do see more due to it being filmed in widescreen if it was filmed for fullscreen it be much better i perfer full but then it be chopped down or squashed for widescreen tvs like most tv shows are heh
I would usually say 2.4:1 (or 2.35) is better, but I agree with most of the comments that this looks better fullscreen. The widescreen has very unnecessary space that needs to be cut off. Maybe this would be better using a different example.
I'd argue that widescreen (2.35) works in these types of shots as well. In the case of P&S, you get a mere close up of the actor's body. With widescreen, the audience never looses sight of the rooftop floor, the entire skyscraper in the background, and the sky, all of which create further tension of the present danger that's involved. This type of simultaneous enjoyment (action & background) can never be duplicated through the use of P&S.
If you were going to use The Matrix for your example, the best possible example you could use would be when Smith and Neo face off just prior to the Burly Brawl in the second one. Smith and Neo are to the extreme left and right of the image throughout the entire conversation. In widescreen, you see both of them the whole time. In fullscreen, you basically see whichever one is talking, completely blowing the whole visual effectiveness of that scene.
@Zaranyzerak Not true. Because it was filmed in Super 35, you still see both, but the edge of the screen is a lot closer to them, and there's a lot more background above and below them. I used that shot as a WSvFS example on my old (now defunct) website.
@Zaranyzerak You know what really suck's about youtube? The fact that when you block someone they are never totally blocked, that really suck's don't it. Anyway's,I will make this my last comment, enjoy you'r black bar's,and you'r lame looking TV's.And FYI I don't own a square TV,I just don't like alot of the new ones. And I do own alot of DVD's.Not VHS.
@cloudvol7 And you know what's really pathetic about trolls like you? They prove to the world over and over again how they have zero lives and can't handle being wrong by stalking those who have blocked them just to put in their ignorant two cents' worth. Congratulaions on knowing how to search YouTube's comment section. Whatever, at least you won't be stinking up my channel with your stupidity. Happy stalking! Enjoy your skwaar teevee and skwaar moo-vees. In short, enjoy being square.
@Zaranyzerak Such anger,I was just telling you what suck's,about youtube,it wasn't very hard to find a comment you made on widescreen vs. Fullscreen video's,and I didn't lose anything,the only one losing is you,one you lost you'r temper,calling me a troll,and other things,you're a lost cause,but it's insulting to block me,because I'm definately not a troll,that's a insult,and you've said much meaner thing's to me,then you block me,if you'r done with the argument just say you're done.That's it.
@cloudvol7 What anger? I'm perfectly calm. And I did say I was done. After attempting to explain things to you in a rational way, you responded with childish insults. Ergo, you're a troll. Then I blocked you. Then you proceeded to stalk me on YouTube to continue the discussion you clearly wanted to contribute nothing worthwhile to. I'm not the one at fault here. Now kindly grow up, and go away. You're only making yourself look more and more foolish with each thing you say on the subject.
@Zaranyzerak Oh you did say you were done,my bad...Anyway's you insulted me too, hell you just did in you'r comment, and I didn't insult you that much anyway's.That's why I was surprised you blocked me,but I will say the conversation was getting pretty old anyway's,although I do wish they'd do something about those Black bar's,because they really suck.Especially, the cinescope one's,they're huge, with the bar's gone there won't be much to complain about...
I'd assume that the director knows they are going to pan&scan as most movies between 1980-2004 came out on VHS. But with the introduction of widescreen TVs, we'll probably see more cinema scope movies on blu-ray because I don't think they do 16x9 pan&scanning.
This video kind of shows a reverse effect, the director knew that the video would become panned and scanned so he kept all the action in the middle. I am pretty sure that is not what the director wanted. putting the action in the middle makes the 4:3 shot look better.
not in this case, if the director didn't compensate for what would be done in p&s then full-screen would suck. head to toe body shots in 2.35.1 look stupid. this shot in 1.85:1 would have probably been perfect.
I don't think that The Matrix is the best movie to use when trying to convince someone that widescreen is better. Sure, the scope of the movie is much better, but there isn't a particular lot to look at. Take a movie like Blade Runner and you would see how pan and scan is not good for the image.

Who the Hell cares if you lose a little background where nothing is going on anyways? I'd rather have an image fitting the whole screen of my TV then a tiny image with two huge annoying bars on the tom and bottom.
Arrghhh!!! Look at this video! The composition of the scene is COMPLETELY lost when cropping to full screen... you are losing 1/3 to 1/2 of the picture.
The scene shown wasn't the best example for showing the advantages of widescreen. On this video there was nothing in the far edges that was important so your comment made sense. Although, most movies filmed in widescreen do have plenty of scenes where the entire wide image is used to frame significant footage(including The Matrix). But again THIS scene in particular is a poor example for demonstrating the benefits of wide screen.
and its turd belonker dingle berries like you who are causing me to see more and more movies on tv on only half of my television screen. black bars ignorant.
The directors should have thought long and hard about using a different camera rather than b'ing
now if your like me & have a widescreen plasma tv then wide screen dvd's are wicked & to play xbox360 on a plasma is very very badass

it sucks either ways. because a lot of shows are 4:3 yet the standard today is 16:9. you have to stretch the old 4:9 image to 16:9 and it just doesnt look good. you could keep the aspect ratio of a tv show to 4:3 on a 16:9 screen but then you get those black bars to the sides of the screen. annoying. if you were to go the extreme and actually buy a 2.39:1 tv screen to have this widescreen vrsn of the matrix fit the whole screen with no black bars you then wont be able to watch reg 4:3 tv shows.

Which one is the widescreen? Sorry i know its a stupid question but im kinda retarded at this thanks :)
FaithHope21 11 months ago

514thebigboss 1 year ago
@514thebigboss Your HDTV is capable of 1.85:1, the black bars that you will see now when watching a movie are because the movie was recorded/produced in 2.35:1, which is ofcorse greater than 1.85:1. This is to give a cinematic experience. You could buy a HDTV which has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, this would remove the black bars when watching 2.35:1 content, however, when watching 16:9 or 4:3 programming, black bars would be at the left and right.

Are there 2 different types of widescreen formats? I dont' get this? Because when I watch a movie on DVD like The Matrix it has the big black bars on top and bottom but when I watch the new episodes of The Office on TV it only has the small black bars on the top and bottom? is that widescreen too?
fr0ggy2shoes 1 year ago
@fr0ggy2shoes The Office was recorded in 16:9, the Matrix was recorded in 2.35:1, both are widescreen. TV shows are recorded in 16:9, movies are usually recorded in 2.35:1. When viewing The Office on a 16:9 TV you shouldn't see black bars, when viewing The Office on a 4:3 TV you should. When viewing The Matrix on a 16:9 TV you should see black bars, this is because the image is too wide to fit the screen, same as watching it on a 4:3 screen
JackethRawreth 1 year ago

I would usually say 2.4:1 (or 2.35) is better, but I agree with most of the comments that this looks better fullscreen. The widescreen has very unnecessary space that needs to be cut off. Maybe this would be better using a different example.
dogwood1995 2 years ago
I'd argue that widescreen (2.35) works in these types of shots as well. In the case of P&S, you get a mere close up of the actor's body. With widescreen, the audience never looses sight of the rooftop floor, the entire skyscraper in the background, and the sky, all of which create further tension of the present danger that's involved. This type of simultaneous enjoyment (action & background) can never be duplicated through the use of P&S.
m22k3yt 2 years ago
If you were going to use The Matrix for your example, the best possible example you could use would be when Smith and Neo face off just prior to the Burly Brawl in the second one. Smith and Neo are to the extreme left and right of the image throughout the entire conversation. In widescreen, you see both of them the whole time. In fullscreen, you basically see whichever one is talking, completely blowing the whole visual effectiveness of that scene.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago 22
@Zaranyzerak Not true. Because it was filmed in Super 35, you still see both, but the edge of the screen is a lot closer to them, and there's a lot more background above and below them. I used that shot as a WSvFS example on my old (now defunct) website.
JustinTheClaw 1 year ago
@Zaranyzerak You know what really suck's about youtube? The fact that when you block someone they are never totally blocked, that really suck's don't it. @Zaranyzerak Such anger,I was just telling you what suck's,about youtube,it wasn't very hard to find a comment you made on widescreen vs. Fullscreen video's,and I didn't lose anything, the only one losing is you,one you lost you'r temper, calling me a troll, and other things, you're a lost cause, but it's insulting to block me,because I'm definately not a troll, that's a insult, and you've said much meaner thing's to me,then you block me,if you'r done with the argument just say you're done. That's it.
cloudvol7 5 months ago
@cloudvol7 What anger? I'm perfectly calm. And I did say I was done. After attempting to explain things to you in a rational way, you responded with childish insults. Ergo, you're a troll. Then I blocked you. Then you proceeded to stalk me on YouTube to continue the discussion you clearly wanted to contribute nothing worthwhile to. I'm not the one at fault here. Now kindly grow up, and go away. You're only making yourself look more and more foolish with each thing you say on the subject.
Zaranyzerak 5 months ago
@Zaranyzerak Oh you did say you were done,my bad...Anyway's you insulted me too, hell you just did in you'r comment, and I didn't insult you that much anyway's.That's why I was surprised you blocked me,but I will say the conversation was getting pretty old anyway's,although I do wish they'd do something about those Black bar's,because they really suck.Especially, the cinescope one's,they're huge, with the bar's gone there won't be much to complain about...

TVperson1 3 years ago
true, but the director wanted you to see these things, fullscreen is not what the director shot, its not his movie basically, ya know
patzivota22 3 years ago
I'd assume that the director knows they are going to pan&scan as most movies between 1980-2004 came out on VHS. But with the introduction of widescreen TVs, we'll probably see more cinema scope movies on blu-ray because I don't think they do 16x9 pan&scanning.
TVperson1 3 years ago
This video kind of shows a reverse effect, the director knew that the video would become panned and scanned so he kept all the action in the middle. I am pretty sure that is not what the director wanted. putting the action in the middle makes the 4:3 shot look better.
whaduzitmatr 3 years ago
It''s shot similar to how U.S. HD shows are shot.

not in this case, if the director didn't compensate for what would be done in p&s then full-screen would suck. head to toe body shots in 2.35.1 look stupid. this shot in 1.85:1 would have probably been perfect.

I'd rather have an image fitting the whole screen of my TV then a tiny image with two huge annoying bars on the tom and bottom.
bribrihate 3 years ago
Arrghhh!!! Look at this video! The composition of the scene is COMPLETELY lost when cropping to full screen... you are losing 1/3 to 1/2 of the picture.
singhcr 3 years ago 2
The scene shown wasn't the best example for showing the advantages of widescreen. On this video there was nothing in the far edges that was important so your comment made sense. Although, most movies filmed in widescreen do have plenty of scenes where the entire wide image is used to frame significant footage(including The Matrix). But again THIS scene in particular is a poor example for demonstrating the benefits of wide screen.
