@Rykanable That's 'cause your going about it from the wrong direction. If you think it's just a gung-ho action sci-fi war movie, then go read Ebert's review of it to see what it is you're not catching.

It's painting a caricature of a totalitarian government that's fighting a losing war and trying to recruit kids using a gung-ho action movie style aesthetics. Be a hero! Make a difference! Service guarantees Citizenship! Do you want to know more?

The movie is one big propaganda film.
