They tried repairing the system in the past. It didn't work. And Obama doesn't want to give all of healthcare to the government. He wants a government _insurance_ option, which is very, very different. It simply means the insurance could be govt if you so chose...or not. Nothing else. I don't see what's wrong with that, it would actually save a ton of money, and no one would get anything for free this way.

But if he were to pass healthcare reform with a public option, that would be an enormous step in the right direction, as well as take power away from lobbyists.

I will try to set aside the mouth-foaming sentiment and try to agree with the basic notion that the insurance companies have grown out of their role, just as unions have.

If doctors were to act as if the patient were their customer and not the insurance companies (or the gov't would be under a "single payer plan") price and care would greatly improve. Insurance is designed for the unforseen problem, not the "likely to happen" events.

As for profit and "lining the pockets", this can only happen when the gov't get involved. See, if a customer doesn't like a company's service or product, they can go someplace else. Once gov't restrict where the customer can go, then the companies can fix prices and "line they pockets".

In a free market, profit is a motivation to give the customer the best service and product or lose the revenue. So, you see, the gov't regulations actually hurt making the system better.
