Charles Kingsford Smith was the 1st to cross the Pacific but he was not from the US, he was Australian. Maybe they honor him there? He was also involved in a crash that was viewed as a publicity stunt and some of the rescue team died searching for him. Post that his image never recovered.
I never understood what all the fuss about Lindbergh was; most americans seem to think that he was the first person to fly non-stop across the atlantic, which of course he wasn't. That was Alcock and Brown, in 1919. Lindbergh was simply the first to do it solo - his main achievement was 'not falling asleep'. A&B had to climb out onto the wings to smash ice off, and bail snow out of their cockpit - now THATs an achievement. When Lindbergh landed he said '"Alcock and Brown showed me the way!" '.
I suppose we'll have to politely disagree, then. Everyone is entitled to their perceptions, experiences, knowledge, and so on, but some of us are old enough to be able to compare and contrast America then to now.
