I think this scene is in the movie because you just ought to have a silly Irish dancing to Irish music scene in a family musical about Irish folklore or folks would be seriously pondering why it isn't in there. Also, I think it's there and in the beginning to keep the audience wondering, if even a little, if Darby's just dreamt his visit with the leprechauns or not. And the film doesn't make it certain to all until the king of the leprechauns is seen by many people at once. But it's also wacko.
@EmBeesWeb This scene was explained a few months back by this gentleman.
"if you just see this it's nonsensical, Darby's actually fallen into King Brian's court and uses the song (The Fox Chase) to stir all the leprechauns into a hunting mentality (three things leprechauns will always go for being dancing, whiskey, and hunting). Darby then escapes through the door that King Brian opens. It really does make sense, I promise.
Wonderful scene from one of my favorite childhood movies. It is spellbinding and magical the way in which these scenes were done, with forced perspective and matte painting. Traditional yet very creative special effects. A very underrated masterpiece by Mr. Walt Disney.
This scene is in no way "nonsensical"~unless you're totally clueless about legends/mythology. It makes complete sense to most of us. Nonsensical: I don't think you know the meaning of the word if this is how you use it.

Actually, it's how Darby gets away from King O'Brian - the little people have to dance if there's music playing. It's a version of paying the piper. Then the little people went on the wild hunt. Darby took some gold and left.
Tmz just used this clip today to make fun of an Irish guy who works with them and when I saw it all the memories came rushing back of watching this as a child. My mom taped it when it came on the old Disney channel (when they used to show old disny stuff like zorro and Petes dragon) and I used to watch it all the time.
Wonderful underrated Disney film. The special effects are amazing for its time. I love the forced perspective scenes between Darby and King Brian, the matte painting resource and the optical effects used for the ghostly images. Amazing stuff.
I like how in old movies someone plays an instrument and it sounds like an orchestra. Or an instrument like a harp is shown being played (like at 1:38 for instance) but is entirely absent from the sound track. Wait, did I say "like"? Sorry, I mean I HATE that.
You know the actor that played Darby was a bum Walt Disney met years earlier in England and thought of him for the part of Darby years later when he made this movie; so I've heard...
@dombon6 That's right, he was just some bum Disney found. He never appeared on Broadway less than 10 years before in "Finian's Rainbow" and also appeared in a number of Hollywood musicals prior to "Darby." Do your homework, idiot.
@dombon6 Yep, he was just some bum Disney found. He never appeared on Broadway in "Finian's Rainbow" as well as the MGM musical "Brigadoon," he never had a major supporting part opposite Fred Astaire.
Since he never performed in America in the 1980s-2000s, he was just some worthless bum. Jesus, do your homework before you slander someone, you fucking moron.
I don't think it is nonsensical. It moves the plots forward - Darby gets the leprechauns out on a fox hunt with the song. Maybe you just don't like the style of dance?
@MountcastleFilms Man I love this scene, it always gets me. They don't make movies like this anymore. not at all. This one scene which has no ultament relavence to the plot is more emotionally moving than all of the movies made in the last 5 years put together. I consider this Movie to be one of the classics right up there with The sound of music and Ben Hurr.
Where can I find more music like this?

Family Guy should make a parody of this movie. And Brian being King Brian, of course! (I love this film, BTW)
