@runnersdialzero333 He didn't want to play live. He wanted to quit music. They wanted the Golden Goose to continue to lay eggs. His COUSIN Mike Love was at the forfront of the "Get Brian Wilson to write more BB hits" movement.
@Mozart1220 the fucking guy was laying in bed, snorting obscene amounts of cocaine and stuffing himself with birthday cake. every day. he's extremely lucky to be alive, actually.
if you were his cousin and an active member of his life, wouldn't YOU want to try to get him out of that? we're talking his loving brothers, both almost as talented as he, his cousin, and his high school friend. get fuckin' real. you don't know them and you weren't there.
@runnersdialzero333 He was doing those things because he broke under the pressure of doing everything, writing, producing, etc. If I were a family member I would have helped him get therapy but let him decide for himself whether he wanted to perform or not. He wanted out of the buisiness completely. THEY wanted him back making hits so they could make money, which they spent like water.
@Mozart1220 what? d'you not realize that, upon bringing him back, they along with his wife etc. got him help? he lost an ungodly amount of weight, got off drugs, and was on an upswing for a couple years before crashing again.
again, you were there? or are you just jumping to conclusions?
@runnersdialzero333 Yeah, Gene Landy did him worlds of good, including keeping him drugged and exploiting him. Even his "Autobiography" Wouldn't it be Nice was a sham written largley by Landy. He new has a new wife, and a new band and doesn't have to cowtow to MIke Love. Meanwhile, Love exploits the BB name with a terrible band.
@Mozart1220 i'm aware of all that. like it or not, despite nearly turning him into a vegetable in the early 90s by overmedicating, brian would NOT be here without landy's assistance in the 70s and early 80s.
@runnersdialzero333 He wouldn't have gone that way in the first place without Mike Love's intimidation and critisism either. Landy should be in prison. Other therapists could have gotten the job done without the exploitation.
@runnersdialzero333 OK, deny the truth. Brian had problems caused by his abusive dad, and Mike Love exploited them like the talentless asshole he is. Name ONE thing he's done without Brian Wilson.
@Mozart1220 Again - Were. You. There? You weren't. Where was it stated that Mike EVER induced mental illness in Brian Wilson?
His dad fucked him up real good as a child. Fact. Yet all Mike ever did to Brian was say, "I think these lyrics aren't right for this band - we're going to alienate our fanbase." He was NO MORE critical than Carl was at times.
Show me any valid source by someone who was THERE that says Mike Love induced mental illness in Brian and I'll show you a green dog.
@Mozart1220 In other words - typical baseless Brian fanboyism at its absolute worst. Baseless claims. Mike has terrible taste, he was kind of an asshole, but the notion that he "broke" Brian or "broke" Smile are 100000000% bullshit. It's tiring. Like I just said, you weren't there and you don't know and you're basing this off of stories of stories of stories that people who disliked "Kokomo" made up.
@Mozart1220 Who? Sources, man. Were these "millions of others" involved with the band? Were they "there" with you?
The only negative thing I've heard from anyone involved with the band was Denny saying that MIU was a fucking atrocious record and it was Mike Love's fault. And that was true. What else y'got? People who were THERE, point me in that direction.
@Mozart1220 I didn't say the millions of others were "involved" moron. I mean fans worldwide. Were YOU there? no? Then shut the fuck up already until you show all the hits that Mike Love wrote without Brian Wilson.
@omegamanroderick I beleive it was in 1977. I think Brian was doing quite well here. He seemed to be in a pretty good mood...smiling and all. I thought he sounded pretty good. He didn't even have the boys backing him. Bless You, Brian! :D
Ragged voice and all (even more ragged than normal for the era, even), I liked this performance quite a bit. Terrible? Nah. I'd say I prefer this to the album version, even.
I can understand being hoarse, or loosing vocalrange with age. But I can not understand the pitchy and uncontrolled singing. He must have been so strict to make those Pet Sounds harmonies happen. How can this be the same man??
What I find difficult to understand about Brian Wilson at this period, is that by this time, it was clear that he could no longer sing (or produce) at a proffesional level, AND HE DIDNT SEEM TO CARE!
He seems completely not bothered with his ragged singing. A man who sang like an angel just years before,
I love Brian, and I respect him very much, but seriously folks, this is NOT good. I know we are all rooting for him,but we shouldn't allow our passion to blind us to the obvious.
I actually like this version better than the album version. I'm a sucker for a Doo Wop bass line though. If this arrangement was used for the album I think the song would have been better.

And no, Mike Love's supposed "criticism" is not what made him crack. The dude is mentally fucking ill, Mike Love or no Mike Love.
