Quick question. If my hard drive already has the parking spacer in place (1TB Hitachi, multi-platter) do I still to utilize a tool such as this, or could I make sure the heads are parked in the spacer and remove the heads and spacer as one?
I have a seagate momentus with a bad head. I have a lot of files on the platters and would really like to get it working. I would like to recover my data. If you can help feel free to contact me
what if my disc has a scratch and the head point is in between the wheel and the scratch?, do you you think I can repair it by changing the head? I already have another HHD of the same model, is a Maxtor diamondmax, please help, any suggestions?
ok i have seagate montentous 2.5 drive 500g drive 2 plater I made a head replacement tool and was super careful replaceing the new head, very smooth install used the spacer didnd hit anything, when i put all back together the drive spins up but still clicks still with orginal electronic brd , pc does see the drive.
when I swap out the electronic brd, unit spins up click once then move the centre of disk an beeps what have i done wrong?, please help! superfly
I haved mixed success thus far using this method, on a trial run I successfully removed a head unit, put it back and could still read the drive. On the real drive (not working) I tried swapping the head unit with that from a working donor drive but disaster struck when the head s banged together, obviously when put together it did not work, I am going to try again. I would like to know that if this again fails would a datarecovery company be able to extract my data when it is in this state.
Maybe I missed it but why do you even need this tool? I don't think you ever said why you even need to insert that between the heads. Why not just push it back in?
@TheFutureLooksGrimm Well the problem is that you will damage the heads. The heads sit on each side of the platter and if you shove it back in you will rip the heads off and do damage to the platters. This is really meant to be viewed with all the other videos i have as it addresses a previous problem and if you watch the other videos I have you will understand data recovery much better.
@Cwisie If the heads touch you can damage them, however just because they did touch does not mean you did damage them. This is really for the best chance at preservation.
@Yoshi17th The camera was from outside the cleanroom. But you make a good point, I really do need to shoot from the otherside or device some way of putting the camera in the cleanroom for the shot. This was a real client drive, but if I were just to show this on a regular drive i could do it outside the clean room.
@macron74 Yes it will work if you are careful and do the alignment correctly. However, you may need to practice on other drives to get it down so you can do it on a real drive, it generally takes about 5 times before you can get it right on a real drive. Practice. Also you can use a Caliper on the drive before you disassemble it and take measurements so you can reassemble correctly.
I have a WD20ears 00S8B1 and read this after several searches. I considered a platter swap but found this specific info.
The drive spins up, and and the heads start clicking with a constant or intermittent sound while unsuccessfully trying to locate firmware zone: , , , . Usually this is a sign of damaged or crashed heads and it means the drive needs to be opened in a class 100 clean room environment in order to replace head stack assembly. I like this video!

hi! i've got a question: you used a small piece of overhead projector plastic/tranparency to seperate the top head. why is that so? why did you not use the same tool?
@bluewards I could use the same tool except i would have to push down on it since it needs pressure to hold the head down. Plus it was easier for the camera with the plastic.
My hard drive makes this strange spinning noise when i boot up my pc (sounds like a DVD starting to spin) then it clicks 2-3 times and works fine.I havent had any slowdowns or freezes.Should i be concerned?
Can you please tell me what's the need to make a tool and then to remove it without using it? Also is it dangerous if dusk get on the plate and noit wearing any gloves?
Question- why do people leave the platter in place and transplant heads, rather than removing the platter and transplanting the platter. Is the platter somehow synced to the position of the motor? I am trying to fix a drive where the heads click, but the platter doesn't spin up at all... I'd guess the heads aren't the MAIN fault here...
hi and good day to you. i have an iomega 500 gig external usb drive in which i fell on while it was in my back pack. it was making a start and stop sound. what should i do because im a mr. fix it type of guy and i just got back from purchasing a torx wrench set?
Hi. I was trying to fix my hard Drive tonight, and one of the heads came off (it's a little black thing with a "Y" shaped pattern on it.). How could I possibly fix this? Can I glue it, or should I solder it on? Any help would be appreciated!
have a crash a Hitachi Deskstar 500 GB. It was no more able to get access to the datas. Only hear a clicking sound, as if a motor wants start again and again. The shop I bought it only told me I must order a professoinal company, it would cost less 800 EUR for recovery. Now I am here at YT to check whats possible on my own. QUESTION: These service companies use a "clean room technology". I see @ YT many videos people open the HD without that. Is there any risk without having such a clean room?
i need a new head for my western digital 500 gb. does anybody know of an independent person that can do it at home.. i was recording my new album into my hard drive and then it crashed. can anybody help me for cheap.

@soldersucker I believe this statement fully. I think the standards other resources set are overly retentive. Its even more important just to simply be careful and do the procedure in ordinance then calibrated correctly. I haven't even done one!
