The official Richard & Linda Thompson YouTube channel just uploaded an almost identical video of "She Twists the Knife Again" from the new box set, but it's actually another take with a very different guitar solo. Well worth checking out if you liked this!
One thing: His pickups are configured strangely... Notice the neck pickup is lowered almost under the pickguard. The other pickups are probably raised, because I did that to my 2004 Strat, and now it sounds like his. Not exactly, but a LOT like his.
Plus he usually uses Fender amps... Mostly Deluxe Reverb and Vibrolux. He uses compression as well.
He has not stated what his "small modification" to his guitar is, but I have read the tone has been modded. He doesn't use the tone knobs, so........
The neck wore out. The neck was older than the body by two years. He's using a Ferrington Custom now, which is alright... I asked him if he would ever have Fender make a Richard Thompson model, but he, being the modest one, said they wouldn't want to because he no longer plays it. Fender would put his name on any old guitar for the money.
And I didn't say what pickups were on, only that the pickups had been modded.
Nice Fender tone! The best! I wish I could make solo (as in, without other instruments) electric guitar sound as good as singing and playing with an acoustic!
He certainly is something else isn't he? I know what you mean about a Tribute model. You'd probably do better to just get a Custom Shop '50s Strat relic in sunburst and do it yourself.
I'm sure most of the RT "tone" comes from having RT at the controls.
I've got a Clapton Strat but I still sound like me. Regrettably!
Thanks for all the info though. Together we'll spread the RT word to the unfamiliar masses.
I thought about doing that very thing, but my strat already sounds like his. And of course no one can sound exactly like him because of finger tone... His tones on Fairport's albums are great too.
It would be nice if more people recognized RT. After all, Mark Knopler totally copped his style from him...
Never mind the guitar tone, what about the vitriol!

There are no tone contols on his strat. Each pot (knob) controls pickup volume and therefore there are endless tone options.

Fuck! that was good.

@MITCHWILD Please excuse my profanity, but it was fucking good.

not only is it a amazing guitar with great settings but with his playing he could make a orange box with strings sound good.

I wish I could get that tone. I have several Strats, including a '57 reissue with Seymour Duncan AP2's, but I just can't get this tone.
Anyone got any clues?

Hmm. There is that of course - except that he's using the bridge/middle out-of-phase setting on this one!
I've never heard anyone who can make a Strat sound better than RT.
That one incidentally is no longer used. Apparently he has it at home but it's "Unserviceable". Shame.
I'm off to see him again in January (Annual Pilgrimage).
