This was not seen as a sin, because the Templars were the judge, jury and executioner. They left a trail of horror across France, and later results in all Catholic Knight Orders being treated with disdain - a shame, since many were not as cruel. If anyone truly "ended" the age of chivalry, it was the Templars themselves. Letting greed over ride it.
