  • Sound is amazing, yes, but these sleeves are new to my eyes and I've collected 78s for a fair number of years.

  • Thank Alan Blumlein for the original quality audio About 1929 the Columbia (UK) tasked him with getting round the Westrex recording patents which cost the company. His new system, from mic to disc cutter, achieved the task and outperformed the Westrex. In the 1930s he worked on stereo (film & disc) and patented the stereo disc system eventually used from 1958; worked on the 405 line tv system used by the BBC from 1936, and was killed in a plane crash working on air to ground radar in WW2.

  • Cheez, how'd I miss this side? Crisp as a new shirt.

  • From around 1930, when the first ribbon microphones came on the market, record companies started experimenting with true HiFi sound. This record is one of those early examples. The big problem was that the gramophones of that era simply couldn't cope with the detail that was recorded, sometimes wearing a record down in one play. So after a short time they had to go back to LoFi sound. But what is left shows what good technicians WERE able to record.

  • This was one of my absolute favorite 78s, before I lost my collection thanks to the Dutch IRS. These laminated Columbias are among the best sounding records ever made (including 2010 high quality vinyl). The dynamics are simply breathtaking.

  • @syncopeter I fully agree! It was one of my first 78s, back in 1989 (I bought at the Zwarte Schijf in Hilversum). This afternoon, I played it on my radiogram.

Kudos on the super sound quality here ! ! !

  • Did Freddy Gardner work with Gibbons? Sounds like his sax near the end--much like in Al Bowlly's Ray Noble recodings.
