I always thought it was weird that Chris Penn wasn't as famous Seeing as how he really was a good actor, as well as movie star god Sean Penn's brother.

And of course, Walken is genius. His mannerisms are still funny as hell, but he also has technique as an actor. He was so goddamn evil in this movie. (Yet you can also tell he looks regretful when about to shoot his own kid, but he's running on pure paranoia and just refuses to take the risk).

I always love Walken's sudden changes in voice. For example; "(Normal voice).. all the other coyotes come along, they circle around.. (Gravelly whisper) they kill that dog.. (Normal voice).. eat it.."

Anyway, "At Close Range" is a criminally underrated film & it's one of his best performance. The root of all evil. And even more chilling because that sociopath actually existed..

i love this movie. This movies was sooooo gooood. and sooo saaaad. unfortunately it's based on a true story. i never knew this movie was underrated. i wander what came out around the time this did. i was born the year before this came out. one of the reasons besides the good acting, plot story line etc. that makes this film so good is how unpredictable it is amazing but again very sad.

The most under-rated film of all time. Walken's performance is genius - understated yet alarmingly convincing as a purely evil man.

I was also captivated by a stunning brunette who made a very brief appearance early on in the movie..... I later discovered that the actress in question is Noelle Parker.

She was and still is utterly gorgeous !!!!!!

I think De Niro may be too urban for this role. Walken might be the rural De Niro.

@Uvissiet Yes, Robert De Niro objected to the role of Brad Whitehead Sr. as being too evil. Which I don't quite understand since he played Satan in Angel Heart. Maybe because the Whitehead character raped his son's girlfriend and was successful in killing one of his two sons.

De Niro might have been right though and possibly if he had taken this role it would have hurt his career, though a great actor he could'nt have been as cold blooded as Walken's portrayal.
