This is a photo op for Virgin. The small chase plane on the outside is taking pictures and that's why the wing is in the way. You can see the camera gear starboard outboard. You cannot do this off the coast of California near LAX without getting prior FAA approval. It violates most flying rules to do this.

I didnt realize the spaceship was the middle aircraft. At first I thought the whole thing was the spaceship lol. For those who dont see it. The middle aircraft is a Spaceship. The two other planes fly it up to a high altitude and then the middle ship detaches and falls. Once detached its rocket fueled propelled engine shoots it up into sub orbital space where the passengers would have 7 minutes of ZERO gravity to float around, and look at the earth. All for just around 200 thousand US dollars.

So sometime soon, most US astronauts' trips to space will be made either on Russian Soyuz craft or craft made by privately owned companies. Also, they're excited because it's rare to see a spaceplane from a commercial flight.
