The Face of Imperialism 2011; Dr M Parenti adds shocking new evidence to the litany of injustices visited upon victims of U.S. imperialism: expropriation of their communal wealth and natural resources, complete privatization and deregulation of their economies, loss of local markets, deterioration of their living standards, a growing debt burden, and the bloodstained suppression of their democratic movements.
Of course capitalism has its problems, but what is the alternative ppl? Communism was even worse with the mass genocides, so I bet that won't be an option. Do u guys have a proposal for a better and more efficient system? It's easy to say that capitalism is wrong, but what is that worth if u don't propose an alternative. What about capitalism with certain restrictions? In the West we have this system, but in many developing countries it's pure capitalism!
@dekippiesip Communism doesn't come with mass genocides, even if places like the Soviet Union make you think this. COmmunism is just another economic system that does have flaws, one of which is high government control. Capitalism has flaws as well, but neither economic system can be said to cause anything so horrific as mass genocides.
then what? you can't remove globalisation because it's a naturally occuring phenomenon... you can't rage against it, because unless you want to be poor, you cannot close down your huge MNCs which provide jobs to you... So what now? all we can do is to soften the blow of globalised capitalism - by ensuring that wealth is more fairly distributed, and no one is victimised by this system. So stop raging against globalisation and capitalism already.
Walking through a mall recently , there was a sign outside a shop that said, "brand your style" - That sickening idea that has made it's way into this commercial sick culture , that "who" you are, is somehow reflective of the brand you wear !
People don't seem to recall that a brand is also what identifies cattle ( or sheep ) on the open range , and that their choice of brands just reinforces their herd mentality !
@DonnyDeutschisBigBro Within the law only means that some rich old douche wrote it down on a peice of paper somewhere that you're allowed to do it. These laws are created by rich people to serve rich people. Please dont derive your morals from the lawbooks, but rather think for yourself.
You people are morons. You confuse "capitalism" with "corporatism". A free capitalist society prospers when govt. doesn't regulate it so damn much sending jobs overseas and let the lobbyist snuff out the smaller uprising businesses.
@ammoMtaFoY It didn't say in the absence of a suitable govt, i.e. Somalia. There is a need for some govt. regulation but it needs to a bare minimum and not bias towards corporations.
I remember when I was in middle school someone asked me if I wore Vans or Adidas like everyone else. That's when I noticed that all the geeks were alienated only because they weren't wearing name brand shoes. Kids had formed cliques around each brand and anyone wearing that brand just to get into the clique was called a poser, as if anyone that got there first naturaly got there... if you ask me, I think they're all fake. They have a certain pattern of behavior that's copied. It's Creepy.
important: WE CANT PROTEST PPL WHO WORK IN A MCDONALDS, OR STARBUCKS OR ANY OF THESE PLACES. We can't fight against ppl who are just trying to make a living, these ppl are just like you and me. We need to take the fight to the CEOs and ppl who manage this companies and corporations, not the manager of some random mcdonalds or a police officer, NO, we need to take it to the head of the game, it's unfair that we let the board of directors and CEO keep having wealth while others starve!
I tip my hat to Osama Bin Laden for stand up to these evil devil worshipers. May God guide us all to Islam because there are no other religion or group of people fighting against this system except Muslims. Allah Akbar.
If you look at the big picture, you'll realize that globalization is bound to happen. We need to come together as a species, work for a common goal and thrive. How we get there, and the governmental and economic institutions that need to be set up in order for us to be a successful world society is a huge problem that still needs to be overcome. Corruption and special interests are a problem that will not go away until we learn to be a more morally correct people. But it is all a matter of time.
As the way of all things, what effect do you suppose its question, knowledge, understanding and application by billions of persons will have on the state of global economics, science, the humanities, education, government and business?
.
The underlying law of nature is the most important subject any person can investigate and learn about, can proceed to understand, and can then come to personally apply in life.
Interesting video, let's remember what we consider unethical production, for the people who produce them is a way of life. If we remove the unethical way of producing them, they they have nothing, and cannot survive.
Bush and members of his admin shouold and deserve to be prosecuted but realistically I doubt it will happen, other presidents did similar crimes and were never bothered so I don't see how ti will start now. The US can commit crimes in almost total impunity and has done so for decades now.
Actually, I would look at the -American Apparel- company. All the workers are paid living wages, they work in "vertical production" factories, which means the components, ownership, and labor stay and benefit here and locally, they get full benefits, and... all the clothes are made here :). Everything from jeans to t-shirts to hoodies to caps. See what you think...
Thank you, Naomi, for opening consumers eyes ... it's the consumers who fuels the market, it's the brands who have to adapt if they still want to sell ...
Mind control indeed. This summer I installed a commercial eefrigeration unit in my home kitchen eblazoned with the coca cola logo. Within days my wife began bringing home lots of coca cola. This even though she knows I drink mostly water from our gravity fed spring!
Logos are images. Our brains think in math as well as images. It has become known that language/grammer is an innate behaviour instead of a learned behaviour in our DNA. It is inbred in our DNA. Those logos have the capacity to be
A Great documentary film on an absolutely Key topic nowadays. It doesn't matter how long this film has been around; It deserves a long-term ad campaign,(Maybe a year leading up to 'No Logo Day') leading up to a general distribution release in theatres across Europe and America.
Please asap outsource all the ceo and executive jobs to cheaper labor to save the consumer money. Till then I won't be buying the benedict arnold brands.
To those who believe Globalization is the answer, e.g., NancybeGrace, et. al.: 1) "If they'll do it WITH u, they'll do it TO u" (there's a reason sayings get to be old. It's called "truth"). 2) If u believe Utopia can be built on 5.5 billion corpses, you're insane, evil, or both. 3) If you insist on pursuing such a course, you will deserve EVERYTHING you get -- and that won't be the beautiful utopia you envision. Nope. Very, very far from it -- polar opposite, in fact. I'll be GLAD to be gone.
GracebeNancy: I can tell, from your inarticulate rant, that YOU'RE going to be one of those who'll be murdered. You're not one of the elite -- you're too inarticulate, and you're ranting on YouTube,f or cryin' out loud. So, when it's your turn to step off the planet -- that'll be fine with you, huh? SURE it will. But guess what: no one cares about YOU either! So, yeah . . . bye! Don't let the door hit ya, darlin'.
I am a highly awarded member of the creative class. As a branding consultant, I am conflicted by my work. I spend the better portion of my day fostering corporate clients whose aim is to visually proliferate every aspect of your life. These companies are driven by market share and have a low regard for consumers beyond their ability to purchase product.

Globalization is the only way to move into the next successful phase of humanity. Its the only way. People will die in the transition but its an evolution that is destined to occur. those who embrace it will benefit most. You fools can't stop it. Its going to happen rather you die or live. Nobody cares about you your life. you don't matter. You are a hinderance to peace and is no longer relevant to life or society or mankind period. You have become a disease that must be removed. Bye.
its this type of thinking that puts you in the same group of people your talking about. if you think about it that way then your worth nothing if you put your fellow man before you and brands and enough of us do this it will be stopped and we can unite threw peace and not threw corporate agenda
every country deserves an industrial revolution. we all can't jump out of the 1700s style of living into the 21st century. there has to be a process of transition.
If feel like the only way is to make it a way of life; because, the so-called socialist regimes just didn't make a good historical impression. Still, socialism is the way, for me personally.
completely agree, but the problem is, the corporate businesses have such cheap products and its almost impossible not buying from them, anyways do you do any activism
You want to know what torture is... Policies that pay off government from big businesses that embrace Global Dependence and Destroy AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE.
American Independence of other Countries.
Common Sense shows, its better that an Independent Country that hits a depression DOES NOT TAKE OTHER COUNTRIES DOWN WITH THEM.
INDEPENDENCE OR DEATH.
Globalism is death to- AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE.
AS WELL AS DEATH to anything genuine from other country's.
The University of Oregon has been turned into a out of control branding entity by Nike. I wish Naomi could come to Oregon and do some kind of book tour so fewer Oregon residents would drink the Nike Kool-aid. Anyway, if you would like to know more about Nike ruining the University of Oregon with the help of our governor(he got 187,000 dollars from Nike in 2006) watch the six videos I recently posted here at Utube. To find them use the Utube search with keywords:nike university of oregon.
Naomi Klein's NoLogo starts with a description of how the new housing development near her house, that is similar to the house she lives in, will make the few people who still have those houses less cool. It's actually counterculture that gives up practical human values for social reasons, while big capitalist organizations like WalMart are giving people what they actually need. Capitalism is affluence, and I know it's not cool Naomi, but it's what makes sense.
What makes you think crime, poverty and war are not related to globalization? These things are products of corporate neoliberal globalization. People don't want to buy these name brands because they don't want to contribute to the things you listed.
Neoliberal globalization creates poverty, inequality and forced migration around the world. Transnational corporations take advantage of struggling people while the International Monetary Fund takes advantage of struggling countries.
Capitalism -> affluence. Look at the numbers. Globalization is not causing those things. Voluntary trade does not cause people to suffer. Trade regulation leads children in the third world out of work and into prostitution. Ignorant young westerners stop mutually advantageous interactions taking advantage of eachother's ignorance to join a counterculture clique.
Capitalism necessitates inequality, poverty and unemployment in at least some percent of the population. It also needs constant growth and expansion, which I think is rather impossible and probably why we need to fix it every decade or so, like today.
Also, its only goal is profit; therefore, it encourages capitalists to cut corners by damaging the environment and abusing worker rights. Its focused on quantity sold rather than filling needs of society.
Capitalism also pits worker against worker, which I think has a lot to do with why we still have racism, sexism and classism. When people are struggling they blame blacks, women or immigrants. Why does the US the largest gap between rich and poor out of all the industrialized countries? If we cant even get capitalism right here, what makes you think it could fix global problems?
The World Bank estimated in 2008 1.4 million live on $1.25 a day. Seriously, how long are they supposed to wait?
As for globalization, it is causing poverty and suffering. If you look at the numbers you will see that when you take China with its 600 million people and weird mix of state-capitalism/communism out of the picture, poverty rates havent really changed.
What has happened is corporate imperialism and entire populations that have no choice but to bend to the will of the IMF, World Bank, WTO, and corporations like Monsanto and Nike.
"Voluntary trade does not cause people to suffer."
Voluntary? Sure American corporations are excited about moving overseas taking jobs away here so they can take advantage of a people who have no worker rights and have to work for whatever pennies they're given. But what about the people who live on that land and are forced out so they can build their new plant? What about the forests that used to be there or the river they are now polluting, devastating the surrounding lands and people?
@tink037 But you don't deny that more people live and eat thanks to the establishment of capitalism and market economies? The issue, and I think Naomi is making this point, with capitalism is that the exploiters and money mongers are profiteering and lobbying more and more, while devaluing labor and increasing the wealth gap. I totally agree capitalism has the POTENTIAL for exploitation, and you can't deny that reality now, but it's merely a structure for interaction.
@slytown Why is the opportunity for more human beings to live on our already crowded planet a good idea? I'm not saying we should get rid of people but capitalism has made it convenient for people to live WAY beyond thier means and the planet's means. It eoncourages irresponsible and plain vicious parisitic behavior.
Capitalism does't merely hold the potential for exploitation. That is its definition. Workers produce MORE than what they are paid. The the surplus goes to the master as profit
If anyone is interested in studying concepts like these.. University courses are available to further your knowledge. For example, The Philosophy behind marketing and the Physcology behind art are common courses available at Canadian Universities.

Im gonna enjoy my human shaped big mac from micdonalds while whatching tv on my big screen in my house that capitolism built. if its survival of the fittest you hippies are comin in dead last.
People who advocate change will always be hypocrites, it literally means nothing to attack them for speaking out about their disillusionment with products which are shipped around the globe. Globalization means the elimination of community and locality. I think NeckRAS might be one of those people who eats food in the shape of humans, to prepare himself for eating real human beings.
go to see the story of stuff. Companies are a shame. They pay shit salaries while a few top people get all the benefits. They use our world resources. They destroy our environment and send chemicals in our plates. I hate them. They deserve to die and one day we must stand up to fight them. Because our governments will not protect us and will not protect the poor. Nor will religions or anyone. I am training everyday to be ready when the time comes. And I have less and less to lose in my life.
i guess thats why you felt it necessary to watch a video on your computer with parts from cuba shipped to china subcontracted in tokyo then sent to your desk? cmon, globalization puts products in your house at the cheapest possible price. how bout u "train" urself not to contradict ur beleifs with ur actions next time.
yes that is why my computer is not the cheapest computer. That is why I selected a computer which can be recycler for a large part! and yes I can not avoid having a computer in our society and according to our way of living. But I can choose my computer. I can choose my food. I can choose my job. I can choose my government. I can choose to speak up here & in my community. I can even take actions. In that way I stay human because I need to do something even if it seems stupid/ useless.
oh i c. by fighting the corperations you decided to spend more money (which means higher taxes) on virtually the same product as the rest of the dell/HP/Gateway customers? All computers can be recyled, all computers come from forein land and all websites create marketing revenue for big business. if you really wanted to make a point, be a hermit in the forest living off nature like us animals were intended to.
Most computers can not be recycled. The flat screen is very toxic. The wastes have to be kept somewhere. However some computer screens can be recycled (but very few since customers would rather buy a cheaper computer). End of talk, grow up.
I guess it is a sort of human being's instinct to have better and expensive things that others cannot with any reasons. And they compare what they have with what others can and can't have. Then, they wanna show off when they have what other people can't have. The others would have to feel very insecure over what they can't have the things.
Excutive Order #11000 - Federal seizure of American people for work forces under federal supervision, including the splitting up of families if the government so desires;
#10998 - Federal seizure of all food supplies & resources, public and private and all farms & equipment;
#11051 - Provides FEMA complete authorization to put above orders into effect in times of increased international tension of economic or financial crisis (FEMA will be in control incase of "National Emergency
I refuse to be so ignorant to think that only a few "chosen" people will go to "heaven" Or that there is only one way to get to "heaven". I used to be a Christian but not anymore, there are so many denominations and versions of the Bible that I have to wonder what is really going on? Plus they tend to hate science because it either contradicts what they believe or proves it to be wrong. I believe there is a God and that God is not a HE. Spirituality is key! Besides the Bible is mysogynistic.

Well I omit to say of occidental countries. But that is a fact that 95% of american people believe in God. This is the result of very serious study of opinions lead by sociologs.
yes capitalisme and globalization are often confused with the political system in which they could grow, I mean democracy. It's the biggest error that humanity has never commited. Democracy is plenty with ethic and sens of human organization, not capitalism, which obey only to the market, without any moral distinction. Actually America (US) is the most religious country in the world and american people are responsable for this confusing. Time to open their eyes.
"The exploited country receives very little"? Millions of people in Asia are being lifted out of poverty because of these sweatshops.
Remember the cheap toys made by factory workers in Taiwan? Today it's our laptops that are being "Made in Taiwan". The same is happening all over in countries participating in globalisation. Nike workers in Vietnam are on average 20-30 years old and earn a salary comparable to a doctor's.
Our own industrial revolution which let us grow rich was a lot nastier.
That is true, but what you fail to see is that countries like Taiwan industrialised in a time when they could have an isolated economy, that made it hard for other countries to get into their marcets, what is happening today is that those isolating tendencies are wiped out as agreements made by institutions like the IMF, it's a totally different situation. Japan and Taiwan could do the things they did because closed their markeds, and that is very uncapitalistic and not what is going on today.
Globalisation. The internationalisation of capitalism. Not 'trade', but capitalism. It is not trade when a corporation goes into a country simply to exploit thier labour, then sells the products they produced on the market. The exploited nation revieves very little.
Many of the industries associated with unionism and workers solidarity were shipped abroad. So what do we see now in the first world? Middle class apathy, the destruction of class polarisation.
James 5: 1Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. 2Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3Your gold and silver are corroded.
Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. 6You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you.
It's time we all woke up and smelled the Mocha. We can stick our fingers in our ears and pretend it is not happening, just so that we can keep wearing our Gap chinos and our Nike airs on our way to Starbucks and McDonald's...But won't we be held responsible for what these corporations do to their employees? We should at least encourage awareness, because it is the consumers who have the power of demanding changes, if we care to use it.
You can find instances of evil Co-ops like Jim Jones and Virtuous Corporations. But its the people and not the structures themselves that are to blame. Corporations Co-ops They are amoral legal entities and its the people behind the co-ops and the corporations that make them evil contrary to what you said.
You-tube/google is a hugely successful company that is based on the profit motive. Is that evil? They are allowing you a platform to express your ideas.
Yes jim Jones is responsible for His results. By the same logic Ken Lay and not the legal entity of the corporation is responsible for the destruction of Enron.
Because you can find instances of Corporate good deeds and corporate malfeasance this disproves your theory and is evidence of what Friedman says is correct. That corporations are amoral and that a corporation that does not make money will cease to exist.
I lived in Savannah, GA during a G8 conference at Sea Island, GA, right after 9/11. The Starbucks?? Looked like an Embassy. I was 18, in a new city alone, and felt totally intimidated buying a mocha.
Its the same thing with Democracy Now they condemn corporations but are funded by the Ford Foundation one of the largest corporations in the world....
Ford Foundation assets come from stock held in the Ford Motor Company. So when more people buy SUV the Ford foundation has more money to give to democracy now. Or in other words when corporations do go they have more money to fund anti-corporate attacks...
Klein continues to condemn the agents of globalization corporations while at the same time using and benefiting from it..
There are global disparities Naomi Klein gets paid more for her book then the person who chopped down the tree that is used for paper. She gets paid more than the person who worked the printing press or the driver that delivered it to the store or the worker that sold you the book.
She may condemn it but she is part of the "problem" and not the solution..
Yes, Naomi went through a corporation to publish her book, but by the same token does it make Noam Chomsky any worse when selling his essays through Barnes and Noble?
There has to be a vehicle in some way to put the message out, and to give exposure to Klein's message about brand globalization. The real essence of her book is to give awareness to our society, and I think her book has been a successful attempt.
Chomsky and Klein hypocrites they both condemn corporation and then make huge profits from them..
Why don't they give up the money give it to some non-profit. Give it to globalizations losers that they claim to champion..
But how can you say that corporations are evil when they publishing ideas that you agree with? Corporations like Friedman said are amoral they are a tool that could be used for good or evil. What is good or evil depends on your values...
Wait a second, what Chomsky and Klein does on their own time is their business, how do you know that they don't contribute to charities? And they aren't condemning corporations, they are putting out the evidence out there to stimulate learning and awareness in society.
And also, the information they pose is more for educational purposes rather than putting down these giant multi-nationals, as a way of "take the information as how you want to". The same goes for Ed Burtynsky and his photographic collection / film "Manufactured Landscapes". The whole behind these social activist messages it to enlighten people.
Wait a second, what Chomsky and Klein do on their own time is their business, how do you know that they aren't already contributing to charities? Also, they aren't condemning corporations either because they obviously use the corporation's power to their advantage, by spreading the message as just a way of putting it out there.
Yes they make money from selling books and all that. However most of their writings you can get free and they don't seem to condemn that.
Charity doesn't work anyway.. It's treats a symptom not a cause and it does so very poorly, and I don't think two critical leftists and their savings are going to make too much of a dent on the world's injustices.
Corporations are designed to take advantage of others weaknesses and not to care of consequences. They do this in their own self interest. However people who believe this to be right condemn working people around the world for protesting and rebelling against this order claiming they are stupid leftists who just can't see the big picture when in fact all they are doing is what's best in their self-interest. That's generally called hypocrisy.
They are not designed to do anything. They are a legal status they are amoral. Some Corporations do have negative consequences but its the people behind the corporations.
If Corporations provide sell Naomi Kleins books. Corporations pay her salary as a Journalist. Corporations fund the anti-globalization movement through grants to Democracy Now.
Corporations are amoral they are a tool like a hammer nails fire and the internet. Its the people behind the corporations and not the corporations them selves that are "evil"
Corporations are amoral entities intended to generate profit. The people behind them are rather irrelevant, it is the profit motive that drives them all. Only a co-op or government agency or corporation is truly driven by the people behind it.
By the same token governments are amoral. Co-ops are amoral communist co-ops and communes have killed millions of people. I think any ration person can find co-ops that have positive things for society and some that have done negative things.
Jim Jones ran a co-op and poisoned through kool-aid and had the will of the people.
Are you saying that all governments and co-ops are Good just because they have the will of the "people"?
And was Jim Jones driven by a profit motive or detached amoral concerns? Citing a cult leader as representative of co-ops is misleading and stupid. Saying that communes have "murdered" people is equally pointless.
My point that you managed to completely ignore yet support with your examples is that you get similar results from corporations no matter what people are "in charge" but vastly different results from governments and other organizations depending upon who is running them.
No Jim Jones was a preacher and a leader of a Co-op. Jim Jones he denounced Capitalism the profit motive and greed. What he preaached was Apostolic socialism.
Lets me you 2 other examples Soviet Communes have murdered people. The Collectivization of the Great leap forward Cultural Revolution murdered people.
China Since moving away from Collectivization and communes and allowing Large Corporations China has pulled out over 400 million from extreme poverty.
You argue with me yet once again prove my point. Your point seems to be "socialism is bad" whereas mine was always "people make the difference in governments and co-ops but not in corporations".
Jim Jones is hardly representative of co-ops, he (and not any system) is responsible for those results. But I dare you to find one non-cult co-op in the United States that murdered people.
We are learning the affects of globalization in social history. It's fasinating how many people are affected by it. Take Walmart for instance I ahve family in Nova Scotia that were forced to close down shop because of the construction of a Walmart. The store they had previously owned had been up for years and was popular with tourists but because of one hugley globalized store the were no longer receiving costomers. Walmart is somwhere I would never shop in 1000 years.
There's a difficult issue touched on in the sweatshop images. As third-world countries industrialize, they SLOWLY demand better wages and consume more goods. Demand for cheap goods goes up, but there's one less place in the world where we can produce them. (Look to some Asian countries for examples.) What then? Perhaps the technology to produce goods cheaply will replace the need for mass human labour.
Or perhaps it won't. What is then? World War? Right now we can keep third world quiet, but when information technologies get there, we are pretty much doomed. Everything would become equal, or genocide of ALL humans, including races, religion YOU name it, will be extinct.
Demand? Are wages something you can just legislate into existence? Globalized and non-union China wages are rising 40 percent while unionized and heavily regulated latin america wages have been flat.
Wages are determined by the market and not by governments or "demanding" higher wages.
Surely, by the word "demand", I didn't mean to imply that workers somehow raise fists to the gov't and the gov't forces a wage increase. I apologise if that is the impression I gave.
If Chinese labour becomes more attractive, workers won't work for pennies forever. The industrialisation process for the third world will be similar to the West's a century ago, except that they are in a global market rather than a national one.
I agree with much of what you say... But they are getting paid more because people worldwide are buying more chinese goods and the quality of the Chinese goods is increasing. Case in point China once made the component parts and now they are making the entire computer hence Lenovo.
But I do think that people do people do raise their fist and ask for more money its called a general strike. But just demanding money with out regard to the market fundamentals will not work.
Pretty cool. However, the reason why riot police guard those places is because they produce the most revenue for cities; both tourist and resident revenue.
LOL @ NIKE! My friend did a College Presentation on Nike. He had a Mexican kid being hit over the head with the Nike Logo, and he then cut open a Nike Soccer ball to expose blood stains in the inner stitching.
Screw these symbols and those who hide behind them. As Public Enemy says, "SHUT EM DOWN"
It's not "your", it's "you're". BTW: Neo-marxism is an international term which refers to the ideologies that are based on Marxian metaphysics. And yeah, I'm pretty intelligent, for that matter. Thanks for the compliment.
there's nothing "neo" about the monopoly media. it's more Nazi than commie. The challenge is to realize that the "game' is fixed, and that the global tides are on the move. Your insight is limited to the man in front of the curtain. My self, i've am willing to look behind the curtain, and I can say that even the puppet master has stings attached. it awareness simply. Do you know where the strings go? I thought not.
Media-wise or cultural/sociology-wise for that matter, "neo" does have a meaning in neo-Marxism because it retains old Marxian dogmatic metaphysics but now applies it on current societies in order to claim that capitalism sucks/does not work. The problem I have with that is not the critical energy of it, but the analysis. They are not criticizing capitalism but the effects of their own ideology, which is big government corporatism.
so then are you saying that, government corporatism is " there" idea, and it is not accurate? reality and " ism's " rarely mix. Where does the shirt you are wearing come from? what did you pay, and how much did it actually cost to make the cloth and labor to sew it? Capitalism, as long as it's in my yard.
who is saying multinationals help to develop poor countries? In Sri Lanka they are operating for more than 4 decades but still we are poor and under developed. Private companies never think about public welfare more than their profit. PROFIT IS THEIR MAIN GOAL. FUCK MULTINATIONALS!
Comparatively, your agrarian forefathers would be kicking your whining ass. Your not living up to american standards of life, and that is unfortunate, but compared to the literally dirt-poor beginnings not 2 decades ago, you are vastly better off then your grandfather could even dream.
Multinationals are not the problem. Protective american tarriffs are the problem.

How we get there, and the governmental and economic institutions that need to be set up in order for us to be a successful world society is a huge problem that still needs to be overcome. Corruption and special interests are a problem that will not go away until we learn to be a more morally correct people. But it is all a matter of time.

THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL QUESTION OF ALL:
.
What is the underlying law of nature.
.

Capitalism is affluence, and I know it's not cool Naomi, but it's what makes sense.

bob44466 3 years ago
What makes you think crime, poverty and war are not related to globalization? These things are products of corporate neoliberal globalization. People don't want to buy these name brands because they don't want to contribute to the things you listed.
Neoliberal globalization creates poverty, inequality and forced migration around the world. Transnational corporations take advantage of struggling people while the International Monetary Fund takes advantage of struggling countries.
tink037 3 years ago 2
Capitalism -> affluence. Look at the numbers. Globalization is not causing those things. Voluntary trade does not cause people to suffer. Trade regulation leads children in the third world out of work and into prostitution. Ignorant young westerners stop mutually advantageous interactions taking advantage of eachother's ignorance to join a counterculture clique.
thinkingisawesome 3 years ago
Capitalism necessitates inequality, poverty and unemployment in at least some percent of the population. It also needs constant growth and expansion, which I think is rather impossible and probably why we need to fix it every decade or so, like today.
Also, its only goal is profit; therefore, it encourages capitalists to cut corners by damaging the environment and abusing worker rights. Its focused on quantity sold rather than filling needs of society.
Continued..
tink037 3 years ago 4
Capitalism also pits worker against worker, which I think has a lot to do with why we still have racism, sexism and classism. When people are struggling they blame blacks, women or immigrants. Why does the US the largest gap between rich and poor out of all the industrialized countries? If we cant even get capitalism right here, what makes you think it could fix global problems?
The World Bank estimated in 2008 1.4 million live on $1.25 a day. Seriously, how long are they supposed to wait?
tink037 3 years ago 33

What about the forests that used to be there or the river they are now polluting, devastating the surrounding lands and people?
tink037 3 years ago 3
"Trade regulation leads children in the third world out of work and into prostitution."
Why would you encourage a system that forces children to work at all, never mind in a sweatshop?
Capitalism = affluence for the already privileged and further struggling and suffering for the oppressed.
tink037 3 years ago 15
@tink037 But you don't deny that more people live and eat thanks to the establishment of capitalism and market economies? The issue, and I think Naomi is making this point, with capitalism is that the exploiters and money mongers are profiteering and lobbying more and more, while devaluing labor and increasing the wealth gap. I totally agree capitalism has the POTENTIAL for exploitation, and you can't deny that reality now, but it's merely a structure for interaction.
slytown 1 year ago
@slytown Why is the opportunity for more human beings to live on our already crowded planet a good idea? I'm not saying we should get rid of people but capitalism has made it convenient for people to live WAY beyond thier means and the planet's means. It eoncourages irresponsible and plain vicious parisitic behavior.
Capitalism does't merely hold the potential for exploitation. That is its definition. Workers produce MORE than what they are paid. The the surplus goes to the master as profit

yes that is why my computer is not the cheapest computer. In that way I stay human because I need to do something even if it seems stupid/ useless.

oh i c. by fighting the corperations you decided to spend more money (which means higher taxes) on virtually the same product as the rest of the dell/HP/Gateway customers? NeckRAS 3 years ago
"all computer can be recycled"???!!?
Please don't speak nonsense.

The others would have to feel very insecure over what they can't have the things.

yes capitalisme and globalization are often confused with the political system in which they could grow, I mean democracy. It's the biggest error that humanity has never commited. Democracy is plenty with ethic and sens of human organization, not capitalism, which obey only to the market, without any moral distinction. Actually America (US) is the most religious country in the world and american people are responsable for this confusing. Time to open their eyes.
petergabor 4 years ago
"The exploited country receives very little"? Millions of people in Asia are being lifted out of poverty because of these sweatshops.
Remember the cheap toys made by factory workers in Taiwan? Today it's our laptops that are being "Made in Taiwan". The same is happening all over in countries participating in globalisation. Nike workers in Vietnam are on average 20-30 years old and earn a salary comparable to a doctor's.
Our own industrial revolution which let us grow rich was a lot nastier.
Crovmon 4 years ago
That is true, but what you fail to see is that countries like Taiwan industrialised in a time when they could have an isolated economy, that made it hard for other countries to get into their marcets, what is happening today is that those isolating tendencies are wiped out as agreements made by institutions like the IMF, it's a totally different situation. Japan and Taiwan could do the things they did because closed their markeds, and that is very uncapitalistic and not what is going on today.
fatbastardisback 4 years ago
Globalisation. The internationalisation of capitalism. Not 'trade', but capitalism. It is not trade when a corporation goes into a country simply to exploit thier labour, then sells the products they produced on the market. The exploited nation revieves very little.
Many of the industries associated with unionism and workers solidarity were shipped abroad. So what do we see now in the first world? Middle class apathy, the destruction of class polarisation.

You can find instances of evil Co-ops like Jim Jones and Virtuous Corporations. But its the people and not the structures themselves that are to blame. Corporations Co-ops They are amoral legal entities and its the people behind the co-ops and the corporations that make them evil contrary to what you said.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
You-tube/google is a hugely successful company that is based on the profit motive. Is that evil? They are allowing you a platform to express your ideas.
Yes jim Jones is responsible for His results. By the same logic Ken Lay and not the legal entity of the corporation is responsible for the destruction of Enron.

She may condemn it but she is part of the "problem" and not the solution..
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
Yes, Naomi went through a corporation to publish her book, but by the same token does it make Noam Chomsky any worse when selling his essays through Barnes and Noble?
There has to be a vehicle in some way to put the message out, and to give exposure to Klein's message about brand globalization. The real essence of her book is to give awareness to our society, and I think her book has been a successful attempt.

Yes they make money from selling books and all that. However most of their writings you can get free and they don't seem to condemn that.
Charity doesn't work anyway.. It's treats a symptom not a cause and it does so very poorly, and I don't think two critical leftists and their savings are going to make too much of a dent on the world's injustices.
shogain 4 years ago 2
Corporations are designed to take advantage of others weaknesses and not to care of consequences. They do this in their own self interest. However people who believe this to be right condemn working people around the world for protesting and rebelling against this order claiming they are stupid leftists who just can't see the big picture when in fact all they are doing is what's best in their self-interest. That's generally called hypocrisy.
shogain 4 years ago
They are not designed to do anything. They are a legal status they are amoral. Some Corporations do have negative consequences but its the people behind the corporations.
If Corporations provide sell Naomi Kleins books. Corporations pay her salary as a Journalist. Corporations fund the anti-globalization movement through grants to Democracy Now.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
Corporations are amoral they are a tool like a hammer nails fire and the internet. Its the people behind the corporations and not the corporations them selves that are "evil"
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
Corporations are amoral entities intended to generate profit. The people behind them are rather irrelevant, it is the profit motive that drives them all. Only a co-op or government agency or corporation is truly driven by the people behind it.
BrezhnevIsMyCoPilot 4 years ago
By the same token governments are amoral. Co-ops are amoral communist co-ops and communes have killed millions of people. I think any ration person can find co-ops that have positive things for society and some that have done negative things.
Jim Jones ran a co-op and poisoned through kool-aid and had the will of the people.
Are you saying that all governments and co-ops are Good just because they have the will of the "people"?
That is such a naive statement.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago 2
And was Jim Jones driven by a profit motive or detached amoral concerns? Citing a cult leader as representative of co-ops is misleading and stupid. Saying that communes have "murdered" people is equally pointless.
My point that you managed to completely ignore yet support with your examples is that you get similar results from corporations no matter what people are "in charge" but vastly different results from governments and other organizations depending upon who is running them.
BrezhnevIsMyCoPilot 4 years ago
No Jim Jones was a preacher and a leader of a Co-op. Jim Jones he denounced Capitalism the profit motive and greed. What he preaached was Apostolic socialism.
Lets me you 2 other examples Soviet Communes have murdered people. The Collectivization of the Great leap forward Cultural Revolution murdered people.
China Since moving away from Collectivization and communes and allowing Large Corporations China has pulled out over 400 million from extreme poverty.
Which kills more people?
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
You argue with me yet once again prove my point. Your point seems to be "socialism is bad" whereas mine was always "people make the difference in governments and co-ops but not in corporations".
Jim Jones is hardly representative of co-ops, he (and not any system) is responsible for those results. But I dare you to find one non-cult co-op in the United States that murdered people.

Consumerism is consumerism doesn't matter if you are buying books or sneakers. They are both consumerism.

Perhaps the technology to produce goods cheaply will replace the need for mass human labour.
cth1729 4 years ago
Or perhaps it won't. What is then? World War? Right now we can keep third world quiet, but when information technologies get there, we are pretty much doomed. Everything would become equal, or genocide of ALL humans, including races, religion YOU name it, will be extinct.
Azprint 4 years ago
Demand? Are wages something you can just legislate into existence? Globalized and non-union China wages are rising 40 percent while unionized and heavily regulated latin america wages have been flat.
Wages are determined by the market and not by governments or "demanding" higher wages.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
Surely, by the word "demand", I didn't mean to imply that workers somehow raise fists to the gov't and the gov't forces a wage increase. I apologise if that is the impression I gave.
If Chinese labour becomes more attractive, workers won't work for pennies forever. The industrialisation process for the third world will be similar to the West's a century ago, except that they are in a global market rather than a national one.
cth1729 4 years ago
I agree with much of what you say... But they are getting paid more because people worldwide are buying more chinese goods and the quality of the Chinese goods is increasing. Case in point China once made the component parts and now they are making the entire computer hence Lenovo.
But I do think that people do people do raise their fist and ask for more money its called a general strike. But just demanding money with out regard to the market fundamentals will not work.

Quite an interesting topic here, id like to suggest that anyone truly interested should read
Jihad Vs. McWorld by Benjamin Barber. I just started it but its compelling and revealing... and all about Consumer Capitalist Globalization.

As Public Enemy says, "SHUT EM DOWN"

challenging media? I'd say challenged media. you must be really mentally challenged to come up with this neo-marxist bullshit crap.
wreagfe 4 years ago
wow "neo-marxist" your so intelligent. why don't you just stop speaking english dip-shit.
romney27 4 years ago
It's not "your", it's "you're". BTW: Neo-marxism is an international term which refers to the ideologies that are based on Marxian metaphysics. And yeah, I'm pretty intelligent, for that matter. Thanks for the compliment.
wreagfe 4 years ago
there's nothing "neo" about the monopoly media. it's more Nazi than commie. The challenge is to realize that the "game' is fixed, and that the global tides are on the move. Your insight is limited to the man in front of the curtain. My self, i've am willing to look behind the curtain, and I can say that even the puppet master has stings attached. it awareness simply. Do you know where the strings go? I thought not.
romney27 4 years ago
Media-wise or cultural/sociology-wise for that matter, "neo" does have a meaning in neo-Marxism because it retains old Marxian dogmatic metaphysics but now applies it on current societies in order to claim that capitalism sucks/does not work. The problem I have with that is not the critical energy of it, but the analysis. They are not criticizing capitalism but the effects of their own ideology, which is big government corporatism.
wreagfe 4 years ago
so then are you saying that, government corporatism is " there" idea, and it is not accurate? reality and " ism's " rarely mix.

FUCK MULTINATIONALS!
shamila123 4 years ago
Comparatively, your agrarian forefathers would be kicking your whining ass. Your not living up to american standards of life, and that is unfortunate, but compared to the literally dirt-poor beginnings not 2 decades ago, you are vastly better off then your grandfather could even dream.
Multinationals are not the problem. Protective american tarriffs are the problem.
