  • Minmax is bang on. 99% perfect and way better than £4000+. You'd have to be a real die hard moog nutter to justify the dosh. Sooner have the minimax and splash out on a Jupiter 8 or some other midi analogue poly synth. At least something that hasn't been copied so well as this has. Aurturia haven't got the jp8 emulation anywhere near as good as this.

  • How much does this cost?

  • dang, pretty close. the minimax seems to be lacking the most with the filter though.. you can really hear the steps

  • Thank you for making this video. I'm picking up a Minimax tomorrow.. now I'm TWICE as excited!!

  • im surr the max falls apart when you turn up the lfo into the audio range. thats why i got rid of my asb synths. software sadly sounds better than the dsp stuff these days. i still want a real arp 2600 dammit

  • Dude, get real. You have the mini on one side only and the max on both sides and louder. WTF.

  • This comparison would've been a lot better if the range of sounds compared was a lot larger-not a lot of variation in the sounds used here therefore no way to gauge how they compare on the many classic sounds left out here.

I believe that the sounds heard here are part of why they sound closer than they would on other types of sounds.

  • @hardcorehouse Possibly. I was kinda wishing for a wider variety of sounds as well. Especially something dealing with audio rate modulation. However, most of the sounds one would use a Mini for would tend to be leads, basses and drones which is what we pretty much see here. The response of the filter with high resonance was particularly impressive.

  • Lmao, one of them needs to be tuned, and I'll bet anything it's that pesky Minimoog.

  • do you need a computer to get the minimax to work?

  • The Moog has more harmonics and depth I prefer the drift as well, plus its a Moog, siting down and getting to know one is an experience that cant be replaced...the Minimax sounds amazing its also polyphonic and for thousands of dollars less with more advanced features its worth every penny...If I could choose I would take the model D ...but the minimax would be a fine substitute. Great Demo!

  • I love the case you made for that ASB :D

  • Am I the only one who got the impression that on of them is a little out of tune?

  • @tecladistalemao No !! ^_^

  • Thanks for posting. Minimax ASB looks really cool in this "box".

  • great! this is a comparison that I wanted to hear! thanx!

  • This is a super awesome demo - very well done, thanks for putting it together! I do wish it were in HD, think u can reupload it in HD so we hear it at a higher bitrate?

Although the minimax behaves like a minimoog and makes almost identical sounds, it lacks that extra dimension that makes the minimoog so valuable - and that mainly comes from the analog oscs/vca/filters. I think this is as close to the real thing as you can get in digital.

  • The Minimax ASB sounds a tad clearer with the filter opened 100% and is sonically a bit tighter than the real deal. But it is pretty much spot on. My bandmate owns one that he has used for the past 5+ years now that replaced multiple unreliable Moog MG-1s. Creamware/Sonic Core really did an amazing job on this one, and the Pro-12 as well. For live purposes, this is definitely the way to go, as bringing around a real Mini would be insane.

  • I don`t need a Model D anymore.... In the 90s I owned different moogs... I am a big Moog Fan.But once I need money and had to sell them. After this I bought many other synths but everytime I had that moog sound in my ears that I want this sound back..So I had to get a Voyager or a D Model. Then I found the Minimax... To me I need no more discussions about the Model D sounds better.Of course it has a bit more warm sounding...But hey the ASB is Polyphonic

  • Why is the MiniMoog only on the right channel while the MiniMax is on both? That really skews the results bigtime!

I had to turn off my left monitor to hear them both a second time. The first time I thought the Minimax sounded better. But after hearing both on the right channel only, the MiniMoog sounded richer.

  • This comparison is useless without showing any bit of the VCF or VCA! What a heck, even minimoog and shitty microkorg can sound similar without any filter or amp applied to the sound. The basic sound may sound similar, but just turn envelope on and let's see then!!!

  • The Model D does sound best, but the MiniMax gets darned close.

Did you see the comparison test Vintage, Voyager or virtual-a comparison test at Moog Music Forum? Afaik they did a lot more knobtweaking then in this video.

  • Great video. I own a Mini Moog Model D but I have to say that Minimax sounds great!

I'm sure there are people who can tell the difference between the two (and maybe I could in person instead of through tmy computer's speakers) but they don't sound any different than any two randomly picked MiniMoogs would from each other.

  • Just ordered a Plugiator ASX board for my CME UF50. I used to own a mini with a 3xxx serial, it was great. The minimax is just as compitent, no one is going to know the difference in a mix or probably out on it's own.

  • is the minimax asb the same as the minimax in scope?

  • One fault the Minimax has (and all other MIDI or memory based gear, even analogue, my Juno 60 had it too); potentiometer stepping around 3:00 you can hear the filter stepping. Listen closely.

  • not fair: go on lower octave instead of medium range emersonia trick. why people should spend 10 time the money for same stuff? however the pretty elegant IKEA box is worth al the video

  • tune them!!! but good demo anyway : )

  • 1/ This is the best demo vid i've ever seen. THANKS.

2/ Let's be honest : this minimax sounds really great for its price.

  • Yes I own a minimax(in fact I own two!) and have to agree they sound really great-expensive or not.

Lets also be honest: It would be very nice to have a original minimoog mod D.

But the minimax have almost nailed the sound of the minimoog and if I was a owner of a mod D-I would not like to see a product like the minimax costing a fraction of the price with that close sound, interface, stability, midi, presets, polyphony and built in effects.

  • He he he. I own a minimax too and i completely agree with you. The "for its price" thing was just being a little fair play... :D

  • THANK YOU. **THIS** is the kind of synth video I come to the internets to find. making a demo vid, even a bad one, is not easy - - but people like yourself who 1) get down to the point right away and 2) HAVE a point in the first place (besides "just bought this, I have no idea how to use it or play keyboard, let me waste your time with arrogant banter and horrid webcam-mic-micing-soundblaster-speakers-audio").. ..well, people like you make my day. AND you put the HQ on Vimeo!! tears of joy!!!

  • Those are scary close.

  • cool demo!

but it is a bit irritating that they are not in the same tune.

  • The Minimax sounds brighter here.

  • of course the minimoog has a better filter swee.. but i personally think that the minimax is a better synth, is more usefull with polyphony and memory... you could just by a moogerfooger lowpass filter and use it a the VCF... (i suppose)

  • polyphony is the key.....completely diff monster with that

  • sounds like one of them is out of tune.. but anyways, i wonder how this would compare to the voyager!

  • There is a definite volume discrepancy between the two sides. This makes an honest judgement harder, but I'd say that the left sounds warmer (<-hate that word, can't believe I used it) It would be even better if both clips were the Moog, as you sit back and laugh at the comments. :-)

  • the minimoog filter sweep wins, hands down. Otherwise there were definitely some good osc models in the minimax, earlier they were spot on w/ the minimoog.

  • OK my bad ....minimoog was recorded left ...Listening on mono

    Sorry

  • yep and halfway the test the minimoog doesn't make any sound anymore

  • Minimoog is more FAT... allways!!!!

  • Thank you!!!!!!

  • Greatly!

    Beautiful sound comparison.

We hear the most important difference in the end, the filter/ resonance!

    Beautiful ASB housing.

  • call this blasphemy, but I actually like the sound of the minimax more in alot of places. Call me crazy, this is coming from a guy who has used analog synths as well.

  • @ElasticMinds Ok, I will call you crazy. You're crazy. This Demo sucks.

  • @ElasticMinds Yeah, I found myself thinking the same thing in spots... And I've got a lot of new Moog and DSI stuff as well as some old classics by Korg and Roland.

  • nice video. i really appreciate when ppl do good comparisons. sounds like the minimoog could use a bit of a pitch adjustment though. thanks!

  • Great demo, that minimax sounds awesome. I'm looking into buying myself.

That minimoog lookalike is so incredibly sweet looking, I would love to see it finished. Care to tell what materials you use and all, or is this your little well-kept secret? ;)

Furthermore, I'd really like to know whether the minimax responds to aftertouch.

  • Ho visto anche l'album su Picasa. E' davvero strepitoso!!! =D Sei un genio!

  • great conparison !!! real close

  • man do these ever sound close. filtering sounds a lil different (slight edge to the moog on that) but over all very close.

  • Hello, I've posted this video on switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot . com

  • awesome video. thanks

  • bella zio killer...

  • Great video Guido, it sounds very nice against the minimoog. I used to own a mini serial no 37xx with the un-notched wheels, did all the cabinet and sold it to fund my Hammond 14 years ago. I would like one back, but I'd probably want the 'new' Old School Mini, people are paying too much for a Model D these days IMO.

  • great video (and great sound by both the units: they sound identical here!!)

  • the Filter adjustment between 158 and 234 are different......there seems to be a bump at the cutoff on minimax......

  • Amazing!

Thanks very much indeed for posting, very, very interesting indeed, I'd no idea how close they'd got..

Have you ever played the Creamware Odyssey?

Someone else attached a keyboard in a housing like you and it also looks really cool...

    Best regards and well done

    mike

  • You mean the Prodissey? No, never tried, but if I happen to get one I can make a similar comparison because I also own an original ARP Odyssey Mark III :)

  • Hi Guido,

Yes, I meant the Creamware Prodyssey........

Wow, good for you also owning an original Arp Odyssey!! Doff Chapeau!!

    Cheers

  • Thanks for the video response!

You did a very good job with the comparing. This is perhaps the only video on YT showing the similar sound of the two synths.

To me they sounds the same, but beeing in the same room as the loadspeakers would probably give a different hearing? You have both synths and whats your opinion?

  • My opinion is that the Minimax is 90% similar to the Minimoog. It shows its digital nature only under two aspects: 1) tuning, it's too perfect for being a wannabe-analog synth; 2) knob movement response. Some of the knobs, particularly the 2 tuning knobs for osc 2 and 3, sometimes create little steps in the sound. Anyway, the body of the oscillators and the filter is 90% there, they almost nailed the real thing.

  • There will always be a difference between the original moog and a clone, but yes they are close. I think the stepping is fixed with the latest version.

  • No no, mille ne pensa e millemila ne fa!

    Grande!

  • grande Zio!

una ne fai e mille ne pensi.....
