The length of a sentence is absolute. As a programmer, its wise to set values based on what your doing currently and what could be in the future. If a law is passed in the future that benefits him while he's in jail and can shorten his years in jail, if he's serving only 50 years, he could get out. With a 900 year sentence, unless murder rape pedofilia is legalized, he's fucked.

I'm not sure if this is right, but it seems to me to be a way to stick him in there forever without any chance of getting out, whereas with a life sentence, you possibly would be able to.
