I guess they built the Electric cars wrong cause my home built Electric car has 50hp plus clocks speeds of 150km/h haha < who says electric cars are slow?
i think we are pathetic at Top Gear. maybe we should leave it to the Brits. electric cars... terrible idea. i'd like to see Jezza's take on electric cars, he may just chuck a hissy fit and go and grab a Ferrari. that founds better i think. electric cars... terrible, terrible, terrible idea. come on.
Actually Honda's FCX, now called ??? (I forget ha) Runs completely on electricity (though created via hydrogen) and is considered by TopGear UK to be the savior for motoring worldwide, look up the youtube TopGear episode about it.
Please inform yourself before sprouting opinions on here dis-informing the populace.
It's called the Clarity. They painted the picture a little too rosy in that segment. The hydrogen cars cost too much right now (~$500k - 1million USD). There's virtually no fueling stations & each one costs $4 million USD to build (2-4x the cost of a gas station). A fuel cell system according to US DOE lasts on avg only 57k miles. Hydrogen from electricity uses 2-3x the energy of a BEV.
True....I wouldn't say it isn't worthwhile though, I'm sure it will be rolled out around the world eventually.
I would say the main problem is that new technology simply costs more to implement than currently available tech.
Remember when an LCD/Plasma big screen TV was beyond the price of most, unless taking out a mortgage, even less than 10 years ago?.... how' we've come along!
I can't say drilling for 100,000 + year old swamps that have become crude oil deposits, is the best idea.
its a fantastic idea to run a car on hydrogen to create electricity how ever the car is ahead of its time, we need hydrogen refilling stations so the car can be used, but to emit less co2, a plug in electric car or a petrol-electric car is not really the best idea ever because they still produce co2 in the creation of electricity and the battery is not only heavy but the manufacturing to make the battery?? not clean. oh and the noise.. or lack of.
The creation of electricity via renewable methods is more than enough. Geo-thermal, Bio-dynamic, ocean-current/wave generation, hydro and solar (not photovoltaic, fluids in tubes with mirrors focussing the sunlight onto them).
Battery technology has improved a lot, it'll only get better. Some energy companies hold patents to energy storage designs etc... that's another reason why there hasn't been a HUGE improvement in the technology thus far.
Also.... some parts of the world have hydrogen fill-up stations. The noteable ones (That I can remember) are in California and Japan.
Mainly because wealthy people live in those parts of the world where the technology is going to get use, and (hydrogen vehicles available to buy) those vehicles, so the experts can test and tune the technology.
They're using Fuel cells in the Honda Clarity, not batts. Some companies have have (Fisker Karma) small petrol generators when batteries are low (so to keep them charged), giving range more like a typical vehicle, though using Li-po batteries.
Unfortunately all this has happened at a bad time with the economic climate as it is. Counties like the USA will only jump onto this long after the economy is looking good.
it is a lot better than last years, and remember top gear uk has been around for 30years before it came good, so give it some time, it has improved heaps already. But yes last year was crap
Jezza did do a test on the Tesla Roadster. There were problems with it, but it was pretty fun to watch and went around the Top Gear track in the same time as a Porsche GT3.
I don't think EVs are that boring as long as you put enough power into it. There a few videos on youtube of EVs drag racing and they are pretty cool. They have some untapped performance potential.
yes but i still would prefer to look at, listen to and watch a Ferrari doing the same thing, running on petrol. even if it dose do 3 billion L/100 km.
Can't expect it to be like the pommy TopGear, can we?
Honestly though, they should have used some funny current and ex V8 supercar/Group C' drivers on the program instead of musicians, commentators and journalists.
