I used to do extra work when I was younger... it was really boring. You just sit and wait for people to set up the scene. I wish I would've met a Maggie or Andy.
Funniest bit is the credits... Shaun is credited as playing Barry... when in the show, he's actually playing himself...but everyone only knows him as Barry from Eastenders LOLOL
Andy and Maggie's confrontation is a great example of 'less is more' regarding profanity. I think Andy's F word may be the only one in the series? It becomes a much more powerful word when the only time you hear it is during a fight between two good friends.
Same thing with Brent telling Finch to F off, too (except Finch was hardly a friend).
Wen Maggie takes down the poster of Orlando Bloom its not really a gaffe, its a sign shes growing up....so it jumps straight back into the next series....So the story continues......
maggie doesnt sabotage andy in this episode, he does it himself by making lame homophobic jokes and when they come back to bite him in the ass he blames maggie. what a dick.
I know someone exactly like maggie and I have blown up on her plenty of times too and felt like a complete ass 2 minutes later. You tell people to grow up and be different from who they are but i have a feeling that you do it because you have lost that childish innocence yourself. Its a pure act of jealousy and its worse if you are a man and the other person is a woman.
I really love it how the Office and Extras combine comedy with drama and with real life problems. even though Maggie seems to thwart Andy so many times, they've got such beautiful friendship going on that it makes me jealous of them :) in this, I really like the character of Maggie. A little silly? Maybe, but sooo good-hearted (and pretty!!)
I think some of us men who have a platonic relationship with a special woman in their lives can relate to this series, i have this, no I'm not gay... I'm single, ever trying, but i don't have any brothers or sisters, but i have a 'Maggie' and it's great, special, i can throughly recommend it... friendships like this are worth more than a mountain made of gold, there is a downside though.... you can confuse Lesbians :)
@intencityfan because i look like an i-phone...? ha, no... it's because of me...boyish imp like with a 1970's campness... (thanks Spencer, Grayson, Everett) if they're not grabbing my crotch they're giving me kisses in nightclubs in front of their girlfriends... it's like all of sudden their whole 'lesbian-ethos' crumbles when then get to know me... and I've got a real dong! i freak out white-man-van types... but I'm not overtly camp...just one of the those pretty sensitive types.
@intencityfan i think he was trying to make a point that if you're a nice, intelligent, sane, sensitive, non-sexist non-homophobic straight male, a lesbian might find you more attractive than other males, and some of them might even start questioning their sexuality. but no matter how amazing a guy is, he's still a guy, there's no getting around that, so it wouldn't be enough to overcome the sex issue. he's just joking about being such an amazing guy that he almost turns gay girls straight lol
5:02 maggie has a picture of Orlando Bloom in her room, but in series 2, she turns him down, when she meets him, and treats him as though he isn't a celebrity. Weird!
Ha, I noticed a bit of an inconsistency. There's a poster of Orlando Bloom up in Maggie's house, but she isn't interested in him when he appears in the second series.
I saw that, too. I think that's because Orlando Bloom's role first belonged to someone else. Was it Ewan McGregor? Anyway, somebody dropped out, and they eventually replaced him with Bloom. Last-minute type deal.
Ricky Gervais makes a comment about this in the extra material. Claiming that they realized this themselves when Orlando was scheduled for series 2, but they (jokingly) hoped no-one would remember...
what is Damo's accent? i'm not british, but i can usually identify different dialects, at least the ones in england... but the lisp is throwin me off.
Orlando bloom wasn't in this one. Patrick Stewart replaced Jude Law and a good thing too he really adds gravitas to the character of a lustful old perv
@wuzcloopin The guy Maggie doesn't like in season 2 was suppose to Jude Law but he had to drop out due to a schedule conflict. Orlando Bloom took over the role but obviously created a bit of a WTF with sharp-eyed fans.
The role was originally intended for Leonardo De Caprio, but he was unavailable. So the part was re-written for Orlando Bloom, who agreed to step in. Gervais has said he hoped people wouldn't notice the poster of Bloom on Maggie's wall in this episode as she wasn't supposed to like him.
I think Orlando Bloom is a more appropriate choice because his looks aren't as open to interpretation as DiCaprio's ;-)! Completely separate point: even though Andy's words were harsh to Maggie there was an element of truth and the fact she doesn't seem to have any other friends suggests someone should have told her earlier that she shouldn't say everything that pops into her head.
If they wanted DiCaprio for the Bloom role, were they still going to have the character talk about Johnny Depp all the time? Or were they going to have a slightly different plot?
I'm glad Andy said that to her though. Thank gosh. I just said this in the last part, but really, how can she honestly think she was helping him? Friends confide things in each other, not to be blabbed the first chance you get. I didn't feel sorry for her when she was almost crying there. Argh, Maggie!
I think maggie is way too clueless and has little tact..in the next season it gets worse IMO, she puts her foot in her mouth constantly and always puts Andy in an awkward position.

I like Andy and Maggie's relationship the way it is. Gervais obviously didn't see the need to portray them as anything other than close friends.
OmgitsNeens 1 year ago
I think Andy Millman comes pretty close to the real Ricky Gervais.
"When the wistle blows" is supposed to be like "the office" and Maggie is Karl Pilkington.
whitexchina 1 year ago
@whitexchina No actually 'When the Whistle Blows' and 'The Office' are clearly polar opposites.
The first one is a broad, unfunny sitcom with a studio audience and CLICHED characters.
The Office was a ground-breaking mock-documentary with no laughter track and REAL characters.
LauritZenc 1 year ago
@LauritZenc
You don't really have to explain the difference between the two shows.
I meant that Andy Millman is like a caricature of Ricky Gervais in real life...who made a show ( the office)
also about his boss etc...Good day! Greetings from Germany
whitexchina 1 year ago
@whitexchina I agree that Ricky drew on his own experiences when writing Extras but nI don't think that Millman and Gervais are that alike at all.
