dakota31898.I do not share your concern for your "Defence Secretary" one Arsehole Rumsfeld, assured us at the beginning of the assault upon Afghanistan that the Taliban and Al Q had constructed huge underground factories in the Tora Bora mountains where they were busy producing all sorts of high tech weapons. So,it follows that they are ahead of the USA and do not need its technology!Perhaps the US can learn from them?!
@Sudano66 But the hunvee is officially repleaced or not? because the hummer company has been bought by china and i would not like to see humvees made in china used on the us army.
@CRBASF2 All I know is the navy seals still use the humvee, not sure about where the contract went but I agree. Kinda pissed me off, the windows for the MATVs are made in pakistan.
@BIRDDOG551 What bothers me is that they pretend this shit is all new when MRAP technology has existed for a long time. And the South Africans have a lot of experience with them in there wars in Angolo.
So it was known what the dangers are in ambushes and what kind of equipment you need to counter it.Look up the Casspir South African vehicle. So basically US defense planners were sleeping and now they try to play catchup after thousands of soldiers have already died.
@Durendal33 True but I also understand how much this technology costs 450,000 per unit for the Oshkosh. The problem with the military is they at times lack the foresight fighting a guerilla war as we are a conventional military. Take for instance the amount of infantry in the USMC 18,000 when their are 200,000 marines. The rest are all support which is fine when fighting conventionally but when that changes your spread thin. In my AO there was an estimated 1,000 insurgents and there was only 55
No No my friend trust me you can plug your ipod in the 12v outlet, it really makes for good times listening to harvester of sorrow while fucking shit up with a .50 cal
Ours are 150,000lbs with all our gear and they go 197mph and have wings you can attach for fly mode to keep up with the A-10s. we carry 41 M2 machine guns and 86 M249 machine guns with alittle over 1 million rounds of ammo plus we have our personal MK19s with us and thats another 600,000 rounds and those shower things you pull in a trailer and enough meals to keep us going for around a year.
We have had one that was hit by a 120 pound bomb that had enough concussion to shatter a guys camera inside the truck and still drove away...... It was leaking fluid like a sieve, and the tires were done for, but aside from a concussion everyone was fine. As for people who come down on it about the price, not only is fully loaded truck carrying about 2.5 million in govt assets (140,000 per soldier training another 12-20k in equipment plus life insurance pay outs,)
A buddy of mine was by a humvee after a patrol, they were fucking with him (he'd run to get in, they'd speed up...just fuckin around), and they sped up one time and hit a car bomb, blew the whole fucking thing to bits. He had to walk 8 hours in the afghan desert to get back to base. While I think the shit's overpriced (you could get it for cheaper), it's definitely worth it.
Do not discuss vehicle vulnerabilities over the internet. Don't think the Taliban does not use open source information to use against us. Pull your heads out of your assess. You are endangering troops overseas by divulging how much HME is takes to destroy a military vehicle.
These things are pretty nice. Only thing i dont much like about the is its like a blindspot on wheels. but i know im safe in it so that doesnt bother me much. and this thing is basically a giant hmmwv.
@crombieposterboy they DID. It's called the M-ATV. Why is this so hard for you to understand? If you watched the video, it's not necessarily the M-ATV that is expensive. It's the communications equipment and night vision that IS. The HMMWV carries the same or very similar equipment, including Blue Force Tracker, GPS, and either PRC 119's or 152's. I've seen the SL-3 and SL-4 lists in detail that prove this.
I pay taxes too. The only time I don't is when I'm deployed fighting for your freedom.
@crombieposterboy yeah and what do you get when you buy 15 HMMWV'S? You get an outdated, flat bottomed rolling tomb. I've served in the military for eight years now, and have used both HMMWV'S and M-ATV's in the U.S. and Afghanistan. The M-ATV will run circles around anything out there with ease, and take an IED blast like a champ. It only takes 23lbs. of HME to catastrophically kill a HMMWV. An M-ATV can take over 100, and the troops will still walk away alive. Crombieposterboy, go elsewhere.
It's very easy to put a price on that, the total cost of any training and medical care provided to a person during their lifetime. A K-12 Education costs about $8000 per year for a single student($104,000 assuming they finish high school), plus Basic Military training ($40,000) yields a price-tag of about $150,000.

@dmcfarli now that I am properly fired up over your smarmy, faggoty nonsense you want to parade as concerned citizenship, let's go ahead and work this out. You get me on the oversight committee for MRAPS, and I will get an MRAP for less than 1/2 that cost, EASILY. Oh wait! You can't do that? Guess that points out the lack of honesty in your response, jerkoff. I have battled lies and corruption my entire life, and have paid the price. You, on the other hand, go along to get along, coward.

The military hides a lot of its black budget in the open budget through schemes like $400 toilet seats.
The black budget is estimated to be somewhere in the $50 - $60 billion/year range which would account
for large chunk of that $1 trillion. The remainder is probably attributable to hundreds of mutually incompatible
accounting systems the different services and directorates use. No doubt there is fraud, abuse and inefficiency in DOD but that's endemic to every large organization.
@mar The govt of a free country has no right to hide anything not critical. To pretend foreign govts don't know our spending is a child's view of the world. There are spies and traitors all the way up to the WH. Your explanation of the $1trillion is directly contrary to what Rumsfeld said. He said "it is lost...no idea what happened to it.". "It's academic...". No, it is fraud and theft. It happens because people like you shrug and say "ah, $2million for a small truck...whatever.".

@dm Now that we're into it, jerkoff, go out right now and raise $1BILLION for my Pres. bid, because I can do a whole hell of a lot better than cutting MRAPS prices, since you are SO "concerned for the troops" and tax dollars. I can get kids out of harms' way WHILE NOT acting like some faggoty pacifist. I'll save HUNDREDS of billions by closing bases worldwide, reducing costs while vastly boosting readiness and deploy-ability. But you're not going to ACTUALLY get involved, are you shitbird?
Closing overseas bases sounds like an excellent idea. It would absolutely generate some savings
though I think there are political entanglements given the amount of money US bases pump into
the local economies. Base closure here in the states was hugely controversial and never really generated the promised savings. I would expect that it would be even worse with overseas bases. You seem to have a lot of ideas and I'd like to hear more specifics.
@marauder247 Neither I, nor G. Washington and the like, have any concern whatsoever about whether foreign countries want me to steal from my countrymen to give to them. I am NOT advocating downsizing the military at all. I'd rotate them through domestic projects...it would help their readiness and logistics. I am advocating we do not need bases all over the place, intimidating. Simply put out a warning about stern response, then back it up. Do you get the nonsense behind "contractors"?
They're too light, the maxxpro dash's are holding up better, due to the fact that the maxxpro stays on the ground(albeit usually on its side) when it gets hit. dont get me wrong though we have both of them and i prefer the matv just for the ride lol
I have driven and commanded both the 1151 HMMWV and the MATV in Afghanistan and would take a slightly improved 1151 over the MATV. It is obvious that the MATV was rushed into the field and has several defects as well as insufficient maintenance support.
@landopando I have repaired and rebuilt both 1151s and MATV.and i disagree, the MATV regardless of maintenece support ,which will get better in time, has a less body count then that steel coffin 1151.upgrades are easier to bolt and the new anti-VBIED netting system is holding up here in Kandahar and Wilson
this vehicle is an overpriced death trap. when fully equiped it has no room inside. there is no weight in the back, so if it hits an ied, it filps over and traps people inside the confined interior. there is a glitch in the fire suppresion system that causes it to leak and not go off. it is extremely top heavy and prone to rolling over. if something breaks it cant be fixed in the field. it has to be taken to a civilian specialist to be fixed and there arent any of those around.
@adam19delta Im a civilian specialist bring it to kandahar. 4/401st.we will repair and maintain, oshkosh, mantech, redriver, rangerland ...etc. your command needs to submit workorders, but quik fixes dont require much
This truck is a piece of shit! Been using it for 6 months now and it started out nice in the beggining but after we hit an ied we found out its a death trap. Theres no room for ammo so you have to stack it on the gunners platform which makes it hard or imposible depending on your size to exit though the turret while sitting in the back seats. If your a TC or driver you cant climb over the radio mounts unless you take off all your gear and wiegh under 150lbs.
mmm...sexy...and to think, all this week im going thru training just so i can drive one overseas in a couple months here :) ill let yall know how well it drives
I thank God for all of the men and women that serve in the US Armed Forces. We will pray for you and may God Bless each and every one of you. Thank you for your service. If you have any prayer request please can contact us at bellevue.org
SOUTH AFRICANS and RHODESIANS were pioneers in this. There was no technology in ATV´s invented by Americans. The U.S is using old, time tested vehicle reformations, thats all.
It offended me so much when I heard R.Lee.Ermey from Mailcall say the U.S invented these type of vehicles like the Buffel..
The M-ATV is the troop carrier every soldier in Afganistan wants to be in - its designed to protect against roadside bombs. Choice of firepower: .50 calibre machine gun or MK19 grenade launcher.
Because this wasn't designed for silly fools like you, 03SilverMustangGT. It was designed for warfare. Not cruising around for entertainment purposes.
The suspension for this is patented! It's called tak 4 it was developed by oshkosh and is also used in pierce fire trucks. And Who wouldn't want an ipod port in a bad ass truck like this listening to some gangsta rap or some classic rock or heavy metal gunning down some towelies
Its because of IEDs, most of the troops killed in Iraq/Afganistan are killed by them. Humvees don't have enough armor or wieght to deal with them. This truck has a armored v haul to deflect explosions from underneth. Its also huge to keep it from being lifted up and flipped over by an IED. Hopefully it saves some lives.
@and2244rew this truck saves lives everyday! overseas! I work at Osh. Truck and build these in the Defense dept. yea they cost alot but they are worth every penny! I seen photos from soldiers overseas of there MATV hit by an IED and letters saying thank you for saving not just my life but my battle buddys as well! for what these trucks can take they are by all means worth it!
I watched the truck in front of me hit a 50 pound IED about three weeks ago. Every one walked out. I swear by this truck. Not just because i drive one. But 5 of my friends have walked out of the truck after beeing hit. Your right the humvees are not authorized to travel on any road in afghanistan.
No. The a HMMWV is not faster and is becoming less used. The military is about to cease orders for it. With new frag kits it is over 10,000lbs heavier than it was intended to be. It has become too slow and can barely climb hills now.
First, OSHKOSH truck is one of the Army and Marine Corps big truck manufacture. Producing equipment such as the HEMTT, HET, PLS, MTVR and LVSR. Dont confuse the name with the B'Gosh clothes maker. Dont believe the stuff thats printed in a magazine. The 12v outlet is not there for the troops to use. Its a plug for diagnostic equip. It can power any 12v device, BUT its prone to power surges and can fry an Ipod. The price of 1.4 mil is fully loaded with all the latest high tech military gear
Yeah that's way too expensive. A cheaper option would be to modify a knight xv or something. That thing is huge with massive tires. I think it can go anywhere this thing can.
Dont get stuck on the price thats quoted. The high dollar amount is not just the base M-ATV. That amount is including all the high end military gear that is placed in it.
y'all can get bent i love this truck 1 because its totally bad ass and 2 it lets me have a JOB i work at oshkosh every contract that we get keeps me making money
please tell me this is made in america like the humvee and jeep were... hate to hear that we are importing our military vehicles and equipment... and how is this so much better than the armored hummer for what we have to pay for it?
hummer wasn't really designed for some of the stuff they're using it for. It's too vunerable to small arms and such. It's not an offesnive vehical it was made for support.
The names are all descriptive of the purpose or role. HMMWV aka hummer/humvee. Just the name was derived from the sound of the acronym. MRAP M-ATV, its an all terrain vehivce MRAP. So how does its name sound foreign? Its just a straight forward name of the vehicles purpose or role. Other similar names, HET- Heavy Equipment Transporter MTVR-Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement these names of different trucks are just the acronym of their purpose.
because its no aesthetically pleasing to 21st century standards its a waste of money? Get a clue, this was built based on needs from the front. The HMMWV, or Humvee, was not designed for IEDs or the rough Afghan terrain, whereas the M-ATV is.
People in this country get all up in arms when you want to provide health care, housing and education "with their tax dollars", but have no problem with spending $1.5 million on one stupid truck or even $80,000 on one missile.
soldiers are a valuable reasource, i have no problem giving them the best protection availible. And the cold hard fact is the 4 men inside that vehical probably costed the military 2 million to train so it's a pretty good buisness decision as well. The military would rather spend money than risk soldiers lives. I would too.
Really, all of this *this is as waste of money* is pathetic. Soldiers cost multi-millions to train invidually, along with time. If an E-6 Staff Sergeant is killed by an IED the military just lost 10 years and millions of dollars invested. Spend an extra 1.5 to keep him alive then not only is a HUMAN LIFE SAVED, but an investment by your tax dollars that continues to grow. As a soldier I'm so happy to see all of you people truly care to know that I'm getting the best life saving equipment.
the M-stand for mine resistant, and the hull at the bottom is v shaped to deflect blasts from underneath. The M-ATV class of vehicle is designed to be an intermediary between the light Recon vehicles(Humvee), and heavier and many times unweildy MRAP vehicles.
Yes. It also has a V-shaped hull to better deflect any blast. Much of the humvee's problems wasn't exactly armoring, but the fact that a lot of the IEDs and mines flipped it over.
Made in Israel. In the factory of Plasan.

You, on the other hand, go along to get along, coward.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0
Submit a bid for your own solution under the price point you mentioned.
Alternately, you can spec out a comparable version and let us know. You claimed it can be done for under
$2 million/unit. If you possess some insight on protected vehicle design and manufacturing I'd like to know.
I'm not saying that the M-ATV doesn't suffer from some price inflation but there were 10 competitors
and the competition was pretty heavily documented.

@marauder247 CERTAINLY! It was also "pretty heavily documented" that DoD paid $400 for a toilet seat, so think you can do better? YOU CAN'T CUZ THATZ WUT THAY SED IT KOSTZ!!! Also, the DoD lost...what? $1TRILLION in 10 yrs. LOST!. "but...but they have accountants and you hate America if you think they lost it even when the incompetent, corrupt, anti-American scum said so themselves". You people make me sick. You have no desire to "know" anything, boy. Go play your games w/children.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0
No doubt there is fraud, abuse and inefficiency in DOD but that's endemic to every large organization.
marauder247 1 year ago

But you're not going to ACTUALLY get involved, are you shitbird?
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0
You seem to have a lot of ideas and I'd like to hear more specifics.
marauder247 1 year ago
@marauder247 Neither I, nor G. Washington and the like, have any concern whatsoever about whether foreign countries want me to steal from my countrymen to give to them. I am NOT advocating downsizing the military at all. I'd rotate them through domestic projects...it would help their readiness and logistics. I am advocating we do not need bases all over the place, intimidating. Simply put out a warning about stern response, then back it up. Do you get the nonsense behind "contractors"?

I have driven and commanded both the 1151 HMMWV and the MATV in Afghanistan and would take a slightly improved 1151 over the MATV. It is obvious that the MATV was rushed into the field and has several defects as well as insufficient maintenance support.

@landopando I have repaired and rebuilt both 1151s and MATV.and i disagree, the MATV regardless of maintenece support ,which will get better in time, has a less body count then that steel coffin 1151.upgrades are easier to bolt and the new anti-VBIED netting system is holding up here in Kandahar and Wilson

this vehicle is an overpriced death trap. when fully equiped it has no room inside. there is no weight in the back, so if it hits an ied, it filps over and traps people inside the confined interior. there is a glitch in the fire suppresion system that causes it to leak and not go off. it is extremely top heavy and prone to rolling over. if something breaks it cant be fixed in the field. it has to be taken to a civilian specialist to be fixed and there arent any of those around.
adam19delta 1 year ago

This blast beater costs a cool $1.6m.

Why build M-ATV??... I mean, why not just put the upgrades in HUMVEEs??... It's much faster and wildly used..
1xtransformerx1 2 years ago

Brabbit1985 1 year ago
I watched the truck in front of me hit a 50 pound IED about three weeks ago. Every one walked out. I swear by this truck. Not just because i drive one. But 5 of my friends have walked out of the truck after beeing hit. Your right the humvees are not authorized to travel on any road in afghanistan.
spartan092587 1 year ago

The price of 1.4 mil is fully loaded with all the latest high tech military gear

beeqool 2 years ago

Amazing.
People in this country get all up in arms when you want to provide health care, housing and education "with their tax dollars", but have no problem with spending $1.5 million on one stupid truck or even $80,000 on one missile.
God people in this country are idiots.

soldiers are a valuable reasource, i have no problem giving them the best protection availible. And the cold hard fact is the 4 men inside that vehical probably costed the military 2 million to train so it's a pretty good buisness decision as well. The military would rather spend money than risk soldiers lives. I would too.

cold02rex 2 years ago

Actually, the M stands for MRAP, which stands for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected.

Yes. It also has a V-shaped hull to better deflect any blast. Much of the humvee's problems wasn't exactly armoring, but the fact that a lot of the IEDs and mines flipped it over.
