Thanks for uploading the song and the video tribute to a great show. Sure the show had it's laughs, always does in a combat, but the doctors took it seriously when the chips were down as they still do.
@johnny10301968.... the song Suicide is Painless, is done twice in the original movie MASH. When they brought it to tv they just did the instrumental, but that was the original version.
@johnny10301968 I actually think the song fits the show quite well. If look at how much they complain, and how bad they actually have it watching soliders die all the time, I think you will be able to see that too.
If they Brought Back MASH. It would be Biting off more than Can be Chewed in One Movie. It has to be a 3 Movie Trilogy. This Time Colonel Henry Blake just Can't Die, he has to get a Cliffhanger. Colonel Potter should be introduced in the last hour of the 2nd Movie. Only Matt Damon can play Brilliant Army Surgeon Captain Trapper John Mc'Intyre. Jamie Bamber would work as the New Captain Hawkeye Pierce, US Army Medical Corps Surgeon dedicated to saving the Life of every Soldier that come his Way.
@HawkSniper90 I do Not think Henry Blake Ever Died. Colonel Flagg pulled him off that Doomed Plane that was Empty before it Took off. Colonel Henry Blake had Greater Deeds to do for the CIA as a Surgeon...

Also, my dad didn't like Mash since, paraphrasing what he said "This is a show about war, there shouldn't be comedy in a show like this". But I disagree since I'm sure there were actual people like Pierce. Maybe to such a flamboyant level but still. Many people had to joke around and such in times of war to keep their sanity. Heck Pierce lost his sanity in the final episode for a time. and there was the episode with the brother pushing Pierce in the water in his youth. So yeah...
War is a sad sad horrible thing. If there is one small good thing about war is the change it can bring. Still yet...the loss of life is always too steep, too numerous v.v.
lol im 14 and have been watching this show for 8 years i have the Seasons but i love it to death i part XD , but i Swear. Its Brings Tears to the last Episode,
@MissFunnyBunnyLOL You're missing the point of the show. It's not promoting to be anti-war. it's pointing out life happens, also there can be no peace without war to make it happen. My dad told me that when i was your age until then i was the same way as you
@SuperfanGirl86 welll... i think there are multiple opinions about what the show is really about. get your point, and I respect it, seeing all the death and pain and destruction so up close, even though it was a show, I will never be ok with any kind of war, no matter what the show was trying to do.
Mike Altman is the son of the original film's director, Robert Altman, and was 14 years old when he composed the song's lyrics.
Did any of you make the connection of G.W Bailey as Staff Sergeant Luther Rizzo ? He also played a cop in Police Academy...now plays the pivotal role of Provenza in "The Closer" ...LOVE HIM!
It does not surprise me that you have never heard of it. It was a pretty big flop at the box office! However, I happened to take a liking to it. It took the place of "The Frisco Kid" as my favorite movie ever.
@winters2201 Yeah I loved them all, I like the way when a character left they didnt try to replace them with the same personallity i.e. Frank with Charles or Henry with Potter. Allthough I didnt like when they started getting too serious when Alda started directing, I prefered the comic side of the show. Did you know the only one who faught in the Korean war was Jamie Far (Clinger)
The one thing i wish to do in my life is to meet Alan Alda he is my fav actor allongside Johnny Depp. It would be amazing to meet him. Thumbs up if you agree
@292AwSoMe292 I respectfully disagree. I would not want to see Depp. I would give a lot to sit down with Alda. The MASH chemistry of the chactures is so obvious and while they try to beat each other up in the actor role - you know they love each other. I wish I could have been a part of that history in the making. As for Depp - I get the feeling he feels like he is just doing a job - not enjoying - just making money. Oh well...
Its good to see how many people are still remembering this Great Show (watched the Original Movie and every TV Episode from the beginning to the end back in the 70s) also, ION Television airs tow episodes of MASH every Sunday afternoon at 1pm here on the West Coast.
M*A*S*H sets the standard of mixing comedy with drama. Hawkeye mental breakdown at the finale shows how war changes a person to the core of their being.
Robert Altman had defied Hollywood's convential wisdom with the movie M*A*S*H first.The TV series had obviously been sanitized in terms of sex and so forth because that was a no-no on network television then,obviously.
This show broke the mold for original material. Funny, sad, and incredible acting throughout the whole series! The song is incredible. The last episode is so emotional. The episode where Blake dies is probably one of the saddest shows I've ever seen, the way Radar comes into the operating room. :(
@amywynn217 Your selections of episodes are good but I would also put one near the top and that is the one of Radar getting wounded and Hawkeye not being able to operate on him because he is drunk. The exchange between Radar and Hawkeye is incredible. That hurt on so many levels of friend to friend, patient to doctor, child to parent. I could go on. That one is on my top five list. Oh, and when Radar handed the keys to Potter for the horse. So many other stories. I miss it.
I have 2 MASH Megasets. Seasons 1 thru 6 individually and the Finale on DVD. I almost wore out the dvds.
My childhood heroes were always Captain Pierce, BJ Hunnicutt, Colonel Potter and Hot Lips Houlihan. When it first went into syndication in 1978 I " re-discovered the early years and i was reintroduced to Trapper and Colonel Blake which were TV Legends even by 1978. Of course my other heror was and still is Captain Kirk : ) Klinger was also the first Tranny I saw on TV or in Real Life..
Rob Altmans masterpiece movie, bouncing off of Orson Wells moving script writing, all at once, and Vietnam, set in the still comfortable setting of 50's Korea!! Wow, great theme song to choose. Tour de force from everyone involved! Most were first timers, probably virgins in every sense.
This is beautifully put together. My husband was born in the middle of all this, in Korea on an Army base. All war is pointless and fruitless. Whatever people take away from that show is no doubt a positive memory they have which is more than anyone can say about any war. The show was an escape from the news every night which has always features some war somewhere.
@AlexDeLargeisHere oh ok. I'm not old enough to have ever seen these originally air, only reruns. I thought this might have been based off of or a spin off of another show or something.
@D1BonGo Nope, it was just 'MASH', but as a movie. At the time, there was no TV show and no one thought there would be one, so it was just called 'MASH'.
Do you people know the background story to this song? In the movie,Major Painless Pole has the biggest d##k in camp,and he couldn't get it up for a nurse one night,he fears he's turning gay,he decides he wants to commit suicide. Hawkeye and Trapper gives him a fake poison pill thats really a sleeping pill. During the last supper and funeral,someone sings "suicide is painless". Painless falls asleep, wakes up in bed with a nurse, and he regains his manhood. The song is making fun of painless pole
Dig how much love has gone into putting this clip together. Thanks for the memories crazydiamond1966. It seems like a very different time. Movie and series were in a class of their own. Still speaks volumes to me. So many layers hit you all at once. Real 'deep' and so over the top funny without being tasteless. With what's going on around the world now, I wonder what reaction it will get today in primetime slot...
You've missed the point. The idea is that war is a waste and leads to nothing but death and destruction. The movie and subsequent series were set during the Korean War, but were a statement about Vietnam and how fruitless that was.
The idea that you are expressing is similar to the idea of Archie Bunker being a character designed by liberals to make fun of conservatives. An updated example of this is the movie "Marci X". Incidentially, that is my favorite movie of all-times! Is anyone here familiar with it?
Kind of the way that "All in the Family" made the point that all prejudice and hatred does is generates more prejudice and hatred. That show also made the point that selfishness constantly backfires. Just like our government was pretty selfish in its motives in both Korea and Vietnam.
@Smartboy8877 I often wonder if the powerful of messages of such important movies/shows like M*A*S*H, Easy Rider, All in the Family, etc ever really get through to folks. Such bigotry in our society!
Another show that I thought had some very powerful messages is "Gimme a Break!". One of the episodes uploaded onto You Tube is "Samantha's Protest". That episodes contains a secondary plot of Katie's giddiness over a handsome boy from the protest. I thought that there was a very powerful messages about what happens to girls who do not get their hormones in check and keep their mits to themselves! I would be very interested in what you or anyone here thinks about it!
Well, it is still up on You Tube if you are interested. Just like most uploaded half-hour shows, it is in three parts. I, in fact, recently posted a comment on the last segment telling people about my time here and my correspondance with you. Hope to see you there.
M*A*S*H is by far my all time favorite show. I may be too young to really know what it meant to people when it was on air. But I sure know what it means to me now. No matter how many times I see certain episodes (i.e. Abyssinia Henry) I bawl like a baby. Thankfully I do it in the privecy of my own home with "The Martinis and Medicine Collection." :)
Mash was Sad, Funny, Poignant, Heartbreaking and an American Entertainment First. It was a Saga.
the Theme Song was and Important message with Meaning.
It is as Relevant today as it was Decades ago the yway it referred to two sepaarte Wars, one in the 1950s and the second in the 1950s and 1960s. I own two MASH megasets. The 4077th was the Dodge city of Korea.
:( i love this show.. and never get tired of the re-runs.. My husband is a medic in the army now and i can't imagine all that they have to deal with now
I refuse to watch the last episode 'cause it's the one that makes me bawl like a baby no matter how many times i've seen it 'cause i don't want it to end either so when it gets to the last episode i just go back to the first season and watch it all over again
The Single Greatest Show EVER I LOVE IT. im glad there showing repeats now. Love this song too... makes me real sad and give me gooes bumps. HERES TO M*A*S*H
This was one of my favorite shows when it first aired (well, it still is). Never missed an episode. I watched Goodbye, Farewell and Amen a couple of weeks ago on Hallmark, and of course I cried all over again.
it was the final episode good bye farewell and amen! the best episode in tv history. mostly because of the fact it used each characters fears and played on them.
If not mistaken and I could be...I don't recall the episode number...but it looks like the one with the prisoners of war that Charles made a band with. And that part was when the prisoner band got wounded, hurt, or killed...been so long so not sure if I'm right or not.
aww thats sad that Blake died i mean i didnt see it coming i didnt think that blake would die. and then radar left. and trapper. and the last episode was good.
None of the cast new that Blake was not going to make it back to the states.
The writers wanted the actor's reactions to be authentic when they got the news, so when Radar was told to go into the ER scene and break the story (they were expecting to hear he made it back just fine), all of their reactions were real.
I did not know that this song had lyrics, cool! I love this show soooo much, it is funny, but it does over look the fact that it takes place in a war. I can not find a TV show better then this one.
Abynnsia Henry, was voted on eof the top 100 most watched Televisions episodes. Number 43 I think. I personally think that the final episode Good-bye Farewell, and Amen was the best episode. No matter how many times I wathch it, I always cry in the end. I think that the last couple of second shown on the final episode where it said good-bye was really touching. It wasn't only saying good-bye to Hawkeye, but saying good-bye to all the viewers. It's one of the most touching things I have ever saw
Just saw an episode today with Colonel Flagg. The comment was made that Flagg would die for his cause if he had to or something to that effect. The line that Hawkeye then said was, "If we had more men like you, we'd have less men like you."
RIP Henry Morgan

Smartboy8877 8 months ago
@Smartboy8877 Exactly. Unfortunately, I am not sure that a lot of folks understand that these days.

@scorpietta
I see what you mean. There a lot of of things that most of the people of this generation do not understand about hypocrisies of the past! Oh well!
Smartboy8877 8 months ago
@Smartboy8877 Well said, well said.

@Smartboy8877 I often wonder if the powerful of messages of such important movies/shows like M*A*S*H, Easy Rider, All in the Family, etc ever really get through to folks. Such bigotry in our society!
scorpietta 8 months ago
@scorpietta
Smartboy8877 8 months ago
@Smartboy8877 Missed that one.
scorpietta 8 months ago
@scorpietta
Well, it is still up on You Tube if you are interested. Just like most uploaded half-hour shows, it is in three parts. I, in fact, recently posted a comment on the last segment telling people about my time here and my correspondance with you. Hope to see you there.

As deeply as I appreciated the series, the movie was truely my favorite.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the series, but the movie moved me more deeply.
Wow, I could sit and philosophize about both!

Kudos. Great Video.

This was one of my favorite shows when it first aired (well, it still is). Never missed an episode. I watched Goodbye, Farewell and Amen a couple of weeks ago on Hallmark, and of course I cried all over again.
Excellent quality video...thanks for sharing.

Anyone know what episode 2:10 is in? When Charles is standing over a wounded person and breaking down?
and Skyfighter-I heard that the writters showed the cast the script of that part about 20 minutes before they filmed. =/
xemily91 2 years ago
If not mistaken and I could be...I don't recall the episode number...but it looks like the one with the prisoners of war that Charles made a band with. And that part was when the prisoner band got wounded, hurt, or killed...been so long so not sure if I'm right or not.

aww thats sad that Blake died i mean i didnt see it coming i didnt think that blake would die. and then radar left. and trapper. and the last episode was good.
azaptyE 2 years ago
None of the cast new that Blake was not going to make it back to the states.
The writers wanted the actor's reactions to be authentic when they got the news, so when Radar was told to go into the ER scene and break the story (they were expecting to hear he made it back just fine), all of their reactions were real.
At least so goes the story.

"The sword of time will pierce our skin. It doesn't hurt when it begins. But as it works it's way on in; the pain grows stronger watch it grin."
The lyrics are very well done... and a bit chilling.
