@sternstrahlen You've missed the point. Which is that it's impossible not to care. Because you're effectively raped with the fact that they're horribly rich.
The Sex and the City movies were about capitalism, materialism, more or less traditional gender roles (the women still desire wealthy alpha breadwinners, they're just more aggressive about how they go about getting it), and contained none of the insight and integrity that was present in the early-middle television series.
@tomsega To be honest, the sheer amount of materialist indulgence makes you squirm, whatever your political persuasion. I'm not really bothered about gender roles, but the whole "let's all have our own limos" bit kind of sums it up for me.
@blokey8 - Even someone who isn't interested or bothered about feminism or gender roles, generally, can get angry at the gullibility of the few women who watch this and actually come to the conclusion it has a feminist message! My hunch is it's the same girls who were 13 when they were impressed with the Spice Girls saying "Girl Power"!
I just finished watching Sex and the City 2 and I was a bit disturbed by what I saw in it from start to finish. It was like the relationship really had NO RULES and as long as there was money, there was a way to escape from having to work through the relationship.
They may not be depictions of ALL women, but let me tell you. i have have female friends who shop even when broke. Women are collectors by nature and enjoy colorful, dazzling things.
Right, so if Kermode has a bit of cash, he has to think it's fine when a bunch of uber-consumerists in a vacuous, morally and intellectually vacant film shove their wealth in everyone's faces? Well, nobody could accuse the right wing of being clever, I suppose.
I am guessing that this is the favourite film of the mother of the girl on Jo Frost's Extreme Parental Guidance programme who was made to spend heaps of money on expensive clothes for her!
It's interesting how Mark Kermode - a multi-multi-millionaire with at least 3 houses - talks about "we the audience" as if he's on the same social or class level as the rest of us. He has a point in saying that we would be "the help" in a SATC movie, but he obviously wouldn't.
Also, it's perhaps pointless to mention this because the film IS completely shit, but Carrie DOES leave a pile of cash for her servant at the end and a note telling him to go see his wife. Or something like that.
@drplbiftin I'm not making it up, though. He has a house in London, a house in Manchester and a house in Southampton (well technically that might be his wife's house, since she works there, but same thing really). And I know this because I used to work with the guy, and I know a few people who still do, and it's hardly a secret. I have no problem with his substantial wealth (he earned it), it's just that in videos like this he tries to portray himself as "one of us" and it's rather disingenuous.
@enigma19833 Firstly, what's your source? Secondly, that doesn't mean he's a multi-millionaire. Thirdly, in his reviews he's not trying to portray himself as 'one of us', he's merely calling the people in the film spoiled brats. Kermode isn't a spoiled brat, regardless of his apparent wealth.
@enigma19833 I think Kermode's point here is not about how much money one should have, but the manner of using the money. There is a great difference between being stinkingly rich obsessed with materialistic lifestyles and using one's hard-earned money to invest in some good houses. The former is flashy and vulgar but the latter is a life investment.
lol i love this guys rant , but i also liked the film because it was harmless pointless fun but no way near as good as the actual tv series which was far more realistic and witty and clever.

Typical male if the women were consumerist but all the while submissive to men attitudes would be different I think men are threatened by this that's all
@nuttalexx: Wrong. Listen to some of Kermode's other reviews - Sucker Punch, Pimp, a good few others - and you'll soon realise that he's no misogynist. He just realises a crap film when he sees one, that's all.
@nuttalexx What?? Threatened by none of the characters being able to say anything other than "me me me me me me me me me me me" and having turned into caricatures of what they were in the series? This is no great zeitgeist for women. The portrayal of women in this film utterly depressed me. It is also one of the most culturally insensitive films I've ever had the displeasure to sit through. I'd imagine that men and women alike are threatened by the idea that people this vacuous and shallow exist
@embojitsu what about all the stupid movies that depict grown men a stupid fucking childish man children like step brothers, jack ass, the hangover, far too many to mention, but hey thats ok they are just men and there for exempt from any form of criticism for there actions, ohhh but lets all slag of this movie.
@nuttalexx I think you'll find that there is plenty of vitriolic criticism for films such as the one you mention; your argument here makes no sense. Bad fims about men behaving performatively exist, therefore such a film should exist for women too? The Hangover, Step Brothers etc are widely recognised as comedies, nothing more. SATC is marketed as a women's film, reflecting women's issues. That is what I find so insulting about SATC 2. Thank God I don't know women that self-involved.
@embojitsu what ever you say there is a huge double standard for the way both genders are portrayed in the media and its men that set standards anyway this is just a movie like any other its entertainment and if any women choose to model thier life around this movie then thats thier choice
@nuttalexx Let's live in hope that such women reconsider spending lives devoted so entirely to themselves and perhaps not wave condoms around a souk sceaming "I have sex" at the top of their lungs. As a woman, I wouldn't demean myself by behaving in such a religious and culturally offensive manner; by the time I am the same age as Samantha's character, I hope I shall have far more to say for myself than that.
Is feeling threatened not reasonable?I feel threatened by any behaviour that I see as rude obnoxious, crude. whats wrong with that? Nouthing to do with gender. Also Double standards are something everyone is subjected to it.Not that its "right" but men, women,LGBT,Careers, age groups and everyone have stereotypes based on what the majority do.Those who differentiate will unfortunately raise eyebrows a little:( Be happy that the majority of women are better then how they are portrayed in this film
@nuttalexx - poltroon is right, Kermode has a go at bad film, and he has good gender politics. I am a feminist and I have no problem with this critique of this terrible film becuase it makes women look like morons and yet is presented as aspirational post feminist
@embojitsu - not threatened, but depressed and pissed off that this is how those with money and all the 'freedoms of the West' behave. it is not real life, but there is no shortage of rich vacuous airheads who think they have it tough in the real world.
@berlinbrown03 The first one was just decent entertainment; nothing too heavy, stayed within the peramaters of universally shared experience; infidelity, having children etc but the second one...it was like The Producers without the irony, you know? They made this horror thinking it was good, not made something good thinking it was a horror.
I'd like to think that the clip from the film is hugely ironic. But I know it isn't... Why didn't rapture happen. I'd rather we all died than live in this world.

awesome review. this has to be one of the worst films in a long time. i will throw my hands up and admit that i haven't personally seen it, however i know it is bad because the TV series was bad. films that spin off from TV series's are always worse than the TV series itself. it is basically, sexist, homophobic, racist, imperialist, consumerist, classist, and repulsive. Mark Kermode is an awesome film reviewer.
@themostinfluential A blockbuster like this is 'meant' to be seen by everyone. Plus I wonder of the fans of the movie have an outspoken opinion about it like Kermode.
@Harriett2 My thoughts exactly! Mayo is who he is for a reason. He is a catalyst for Mark's comments and knows himself that he is being difficult. Thats the whole fun of their chemistry and their fine British humor. Mayo is as important as Kermode.
@themostinfluential he is an incredibly honest and direct film reviewer, with a political, social, philosophical conscience. All films have a target audience, as does this one, therefore none are exempt from criticism. Reviewers don't pander to the opinions of the fans. He rightfully slates terrible films, and applauses great ones.
this film points out that the slave trade has simply moved up in exclusivity, i mean fair enough if i pay a guy a thousand pound a day to be my slave thats fine, but for me to pay someone that who then pays the slave 20 a day is just stupid and people seem to think that it doesn't count then, basically hotels are the slave pimps
I think this is quite a sexist review. I don't notice him calling the gung-ho movies of men chasing each other round foreign countries, imperialist. Nor calling out the bubblegum films that men consume. It's just another - let's bash women and what they do party. Are women always to be doing worthy and intellectual things to avoid being characterised as vacuous?
I can't improve on Kermode's points so I'll just say this: This film offended the vagina I don't have. On the class side, I went from a centrist typical normal upper-working clas guy to a Cultural Revolutionary begging to execute Sarah Jessica Parker in a wheat field while reciting lines from the Little Red Book.
How intensly can you satirise consumerism without meaning to?
This guy is great. I'm now a fan of this dude and wish I got to see his reviews on a TV show over here in the 'States. Thanks to You Tube I can also access other movie reviews by him.

When I hear those women talking it makes me wish that they were all really deep in the Inferno, and it is raining, and they are experiencing the kind of pain that the world would suffer if it went into labour with a new bastard land of Hell

awesome review. this has to be one of the worst films in a long time. i will throw my hands up and admit that i haven't personally seen it, however i know it is bad because the TV series was bad. films that spin off from TV series's are always worse than the TV series itself. it is basically, sexist, homophobic, racist, imperialist, consumerist, classist, and repulsive. Mark Kermode is an awesome film reviewer.

@mermaydlondon Yes, but how did they learn to behave like that? Obviously influenced a great deal by stereotypes in movies and television.

@themostinfluential A blockbuster like this is 'meant' to be seen by everyone. Plus I wonder of the fans of the movie have an outspoken opinion about it like Kermode.

Some people don't appreciate Mayo's dry humour it seems.
Harriett2 1 year ago 85
@Harriett2 My thoughts exactly! Mayo is who he is for a reason. He is a catalyst for Mark's comments and knows himself that he is being difficult. Thats the whole fun of their chemistry and their fine British humor. Mayo is as important as Kermode.

@Harriett2
Yeah, you need Mayo as the condiment to Kermode's main meal analysis

@analyticSynthetic Maybe you should see his review of the Hangover and Hangover 2, before you call him a sexist.

@Thompsoninflight Have you seen the film or are you just agreeing withyourself over your vision of female consumer porn?
analyticSynthetic 1 year ago
