  • Yeas! Yeas!

  • the guy who's not ranting is a bit of a prick. he seemed to disagree with the guy! which is ludicrous.

  • @HomeGrownGoodness It's called playing devils advocate.

  • @HomeGrownGoodness Mayo delights in prodding Kermode.

  • HILARIOUS

  • Dear Dr Kermode,

    Please stand for Prime Minister.

    Love,

    Everyone.

  • I'm so glad that SATC2 was made because this film review would not have manifested.

  • "You did say I'm not going to rant and that was ten minutes ago." lol It's impossible NOT to rant at this garbage.

  • He did not rant enough. Love this review.

  • Comment removed

  • Next up; Sarah Jessica Parker stars in War Horse.

  • the whole point..well, the main point of this movie is friendship and love..who cares if she's rich or not..

  • @sternstrahlen You've missed the point. Which is that it's impossible not to care. Because you're effectively raped with the fact that they're horribly rich.

  • I hope yor are being sarcastic because if you're not there is really no hope for the human race.

  • I'd rather have AIDS than watch this movie.

  • This restores my faith in humanity.

  • "…THEN COMRADES COME RALLY!" Fucking brilliant!

  • "I should say right at the beginning of this, you're not going to get a rant about this…"

  • @HogsandHeffers I was laughing at tht thru the 10 mins long rant when I 1st heard this on the radio!! lol

  • Peter Griffin was right, sarah jessica parker really does look like a foot.

  • This review contains more laughs and potential happiness for the viewer than both Sex and the City movies combined.

  • kermode should stay away from hollywood crap and exclusively deal with world cinema

  • @frogtastic1000 just to be pedantic, sex and the city is made by HBO which is a new york film company not hollywood.

  • I second Kermode's recommendation of Lindy West's column. It is AMAZING.

  • @encliticcopula Thirded, though I must warn anyone who's interested that her burning hatred of the film inspires some very unladylike language.

  • You're not going to get a rant about this. *Proceeds to give one his best rants.

  • Sarah Jessica Parker: A sex godess who only women find attractive. I don't fucking know.

  • I was hoping that these harpies would have been beheaded at the end.

  • LOL

watch 0:23 then immediately jump to 9:01

    HAHAHAHA

  • Thumbs up if Sarah Jessica Parker's airbrushed face scared the shit out of you at 2:54.

  • And the woman sitting next to him promptly says "I am still going to see it." Wow people are shallow.

  • The screenwriter (Michael Patrick King) is gay.

  • Over a year later I still remember and love this review

  • Doctor, Doctor, give me reviews, I got a bad case of loving you! <3

  • This is easily his best review ever. If for no other reason than he starts it by saying "you're not going to get a rant about this" :)

  • The Sex and the City movies were about capitalism, materialism, more or less traditional gender roles (the women still desire wealthy alpha breadwinners, they're just more aggressive about how they go about getting it), and contained none of the insight and integrity that was present in the early-middle television series.

  • @tomsega To be honest, the sheer amount of materialist indulgence makes you squirm, whatever your political persuasion. I'm not really bothered about gender roles, but the whole "let's all have our own limos" bit kind of sums it up for me.

  • @blokey8 - Even someone who isn't interested or bothered about feminism or gender roles, generally, can get angry at the gullibility of the few women who watch this and actually come to the conclusion it has a feminist message! My hunch is it's the same girls who were 13 when they were impressed with the Spice Girls saying "Girl Power"!

  • I love Mark Kermode's reviews - spot on as usual!

  • my hero

  • I like the first movie much more than the second one, and I kinda have to agree with the guy it was very self indulgent.

  • Your not going to get a rant about this... Oh really?

  • 2:55 the airbrushing on that poster - kim catrell especially - is just absurd

  • I just finished watching Sex and the City 2 and I was a bit disturbed by what I saw in it from start to finish. It was like the relationship really had NO RULES and as long as there was money, there was a way to escape from having to work through the relationship.

  • They may not be depictions of ALL women, but let me tell you. i have have female friends who shop even when broke. Women are collectors by nature and enjoy colorful, dazzling things.

  • @DontForgetIran2010

    You're an idiot.

  • @Lilja124 Maybe you are the idiot for making such a baseless judgment of a person you don't even know.

  • @DontForgetIran2010

I thought about it and no, it's still you if you seriously believe what you wrote there.

  • Definitely check read the review online he mentions in the vid... Its every bit as true and funny as this!

  • @Taporeee Jesus H is it ever. I think it's the best review of a film I've ever read. Scathingly hilarious. Shame the film wasn't. At all.

  • I loved this rant, thanks a lot for posting it in video form

  • By the end of this rant I want to stand up and applaud.

  • BEST REVIEW EVER!!!!! got to love the passion.

  • Ok, but how does he really *feel*?

  • Love it.

  • Right, so if Kermode has a bit of cash, he has to think it's fine when a bunch of uber-consumerists in a vacuous, morally and intellectually vacant film shove their wealth in everyone's faces? Well, nobody could accuse the right wing of being clever, I suppose.

  • "Is there a choice of films?".. Absolutely brilliant Dr S.

  • when simon mayo looks at the camera, and then the ceiling. LOL

  • I like how Sex and the City has made it so easy to get laid. Flash cash + give attention = sex with the girl.

  • "You're not going to get a rant out of this..." Oh Dr. K.

  • LOVED his rant!

  • any critic that drops "The Internationale" in a critique of Sex And The City 2 is fine by me :)

  • @WAAAAAAAAAAAY he dropped that one in a little grumble about the Royal Wedding in the Pirates 4 podcast as well

  • So.. he quite liked it then?

  • i watched the first one and turned it off after 5 mins

  • I am guessing that this is the favourite film of the mother of the girl on Jo Frost's Extreme Parental Guidance programme who was made to spend heaps of money on expensive clothes for her!

  • A whole lot of airbrush for that poster!

  • I never get tired of watching this :)

  • For a good review, just read the article in The Stranger (Seattle) written by Lindy West. And I mean "good" as in "accurate", not as in "positive".

  • It's interesting how Mark Kermode - a multi-multi-millionaire with at least 3 houses - talks about "we the audience" as if he's on the same social or class level as the rest of us. He has a point in saying that we would be "the help" in a SATC movie, but he obviously wouldn't.

Also, it's perhaps pointless to mention this because the film IS completely shit, but Carrie DOES leave a pile of cash for her servant at the end and a note telling him to go see his wife. Or something like that.

  • @enigma19833 "It's interesting how Mark Kermode - a multi-multi-millionaire with at least 3 houses"

where did you get that information?

  • @enigma19833 Wowah what? Where are you getting that from at all?

  • @enigma19833 I don't know where you get your information love. But he isn't a multi millionaire.

  • @enigma19833 stop making bullshit up

  • @drplbiftin I'm not making it up, though. He has a house in London, a house in Manchester and a house in Southampton (well technically that might be his wife's house, since she works there, but same thing really). And I know this because I used to work with the guy, and I know a few people who still do, and it's hardly a secret. I have no problem with his substantial wealth (he earned it), it's just that in videos like this he tries to portray himself as "one of us" and it's rather disingenuous.

  • @enigma19833 Firstly, what's your source? Secondly, that doesn't mean he's a multi-millionaire. Thirdly, in his reviews he's not trying to portray himself as 'one of us', he's merely calling the people in the film spoiled brats. Kermode isn't a spoiled brat, regardless of his apparent wealth.

  • @enigma19833 I think Kermode's point here is not about how much money one should have, but the manner of using the money. There is a great difference between being stinkingly rich obsessed with materialistic lifestyles and using one's hard-earned money to invest in some good houses. The former is flashy and vulgar but the latter is a life investment.

  • I would never call any of it ghastly, but it is not worth one's time.

  • If every women was like those four. I would be sucking cock before you can say. She looks like a foot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How can you not love kermode?

  • lol i love this guys rant , but i also liked the film because it was harmless pointless fun but no way near as good as the actual tv series which was far more realistic and witty and clever.

  • @MundyArtStudio but it's not harmless, listen to what he's saying.

  • Easily the best Kermode rant.

  • pig dogs

  • "you're not going to get a rant"

    OH YES WE ARE

  • "...IMPERIALIST AMERICAN PIG DOGS OF THE HIGHEST ORDER..." fucking brilliant Kermode.

  • haha mayo's comments crack me up.

  • I didn't like the film for all those reasons too... But his self-righteousness is extremely off-putting.

  • 9 people are totally consumerist obsessed men in drag.

  • I keep coming back to this.

  • Comment removed

  • lmaoit seems traits of mark's passionate communist youth emerge

  • booooooorrrrrring

  • love how kermode rants!! i keep watching this over and over - at least something good came out of that hideous film !!

  • Genius!

  • Pause it and then just click around the 6/7 min area .. it really shows just how much he flaps his arms around!

*PS there I had a legitimate reason for doing this xD

  • That film makes me embarrassed to be a woman. I know that it is not representative, but all the same...

And he said he wouldn't rant...

    Very good, very funny

  • That film makes me embarrassed to be a woman. I know that it is not representative, but all the same...

  • STANDING OVATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ive seen this film, and the Burka scene was just depressing

  • @nuttalexx: Wrong. Listen to some of Kermode's other reviews - Sucker Punch, Pimp, a good few others - and you'll soon realise that he's no misogynist. He just realises a crap film when he sees one, that's all.

  • @nuttalexx What?? Threatened by none of the characters being able to say anything other than "me me me me me me me me me me me" and having turned into caricatures of what they were in the series? This is no great zeitgeist for women. The portrayal of women in this film utterly depressed me. It is also one of the most culturally insensitive films I've ever had the displeasure to sit through. I'd imagine that men and women alike are threatened by the idea that people this vacuous and shallow exist

  • @embojitsu what about all the stupid movies that depict grown men a stupid fucking childish man children like step brothers, jack ass, the hangover, far too many to mention, but hey thats ok they are just men and there for exempt from any form of criticism for there actions, ohhh but lets all slag of this movie.

  • @nuttalexx I think you'll find that there is plenty of vitriolic criticism for films such as the one you mention; your argument here makes no sense. Bad fims about men behaving performatively exist, therefore such a film should exist for women too? The Hangover, Step Brothers etc are widely recognised as comedies, nothing more. SATC is marketed as a women's film, reflecting women's issues. That is what I find so insulting about SATC 2. Thank God I don't know women that self-involved.

  • @embojitsu what ever you say there is a huge double standard for the way both genders are portrayed in the media and its men that set standards anyway this is just a movie like any other its entertainment and if any women choose to model thier life around this movie then thats thier choice

  • @nuttalexx Let's live in hope that such women reconsider spending lives devoted so entirely to themselves and perhaps not wave condoms around a souk sceaming "I have sex" at the top of their lungs. As a woman, I wouldn't demean myself by behaving in such a religious and culturally offensive manner; by the time I am the same age as Samantha's character, I hope I shall have far more to say for myself than that.

  • Is feeling threatened not reasonable?I feel threatened by any behaviour that I see as rude obnoxious, crude. whats wrong with that? Nouthing to do with gender. Also Double standards are something everyone is subjected to it.Not that its "right" but men, women,LGBT,Careers, age groups and everyone have stereotypes based on what the majority do.Those who differentiate will unfortunately raise eyebrows a little:( Be happy that the majority of women are better then how they are portrayed in this film

  • @nuttalexx The movie is shit, end of.

  • @nuttalexx - poltroon is right, Kermode has a go at bad film, and he has good gender politics. I am a feminist and I have no problem with this critique of this terrible film becuase it makes women look like morons and yet is presented as aspirational post feminist

  • @embojitsu - not threatened, but depressed and pissed off that this is how those with money and all the 'freedoms of the West' behave. it is not real life, but there is no shortage of rich vacuous airheads who think they have it tough in the real world.

  • "youre not gonna get a rant..."

    Rant commences. Love it.

  • Possibly his best review/rant. Ever.

  • best rant ever

  • So did he like it or not?

  • Most popular with:

    Male 35-44

    Male 25-34

    Male 45-54

This is why no one on the page liked the film!

  • Imperialist Pig-Dogs!! LOL!!! Love Kermode so much !!!

  • Asian migrant workers in the Arabian Gulf (which includes Abu Dhabi hotel staff) get to travel home once every two YEARS, not once every two months.

  • If you saw the first one, this is your fault. Hehe.

  • @berlinbrown03 The first one was just decent entertainment; nothing too heavy, stayed within the peramaters of universally shared experience; infidelity, having children etc but the second one...it was like The Producers without the irony, you know? They made this horror thinking it was good, not made something good thinking it was a horror.

  • I'd like to think that the clip from the film is hugely ironic. But I know it isn't... Why didn't rapture happen. I'd rather we all died than live in this world.

  • I find it interesting that Kermode mentioned Lindy West's article, given that he seems to have ripped off most of it. Perhaps he felt a few pangs of guilt.

  • I love the table they're using :)

  • Classic...why isn't he like this on TV?!!

  • I have a new hero.

  • by far the best review IMO and i totally agree with all of his comments

  • I like Kermode's little sidekick. He rocks the charcoal cardigan.

  • hahahaha i thought that he was not going to rant....lol jk i knew he would!

  • press 6, 7 or 9. Hilarious

  • I just sat through a minute of the audio clip shown in the review, are there really that many sadists out there who wanted to sit through the other 143 minutes?

  • @mmscott9 Surely they'd be masochists, not sadists?

  • His best review IMO

  • awesome review. this has to be one of the worst films in a long time. i will throw my hands up and admit that i haven't personally seen it, however i know it is bad because the TV series was bad. films that spin off from TV series's are always worse than the TV series itself. it is basically, sexist, homophobic, racist, imperialist, consumerist, classist, and repulsive. Mark Kermode is an awesome film reviewer.

  • That was amazing!!

  • I love the guys reaction behind Kermode

  • Haha! Mark Kermode singing the Internationale. Amazing review, as always :D

  • Four clucking egglayers.

  • Sex and the City 2 is a recruitment video for Al-Qaeda.

  • Unbelievably spot on.

  • *applause*

  • I have to say this makes me want to see this terrible movie.

  • @mermaydlondon Yes, but how did they learn to behave like that? Obviously influenced a great deal by stereotypes in movies and television.

  • @themostinfluential A blockbuster like this is 'meant' to be seen by everyone. Plus I wonder of the fans of the movie have an outspoken opinion about it like Kermode.

  • Some people don't appreciate Mayo's dry humour it seems.

  • @Harriett2 My thoughts exactly! Mayo is who he is for a reason. He is a catalyst for Mark's comments and knows himself that he is being difficult. Thats the whole fun of their chemistry and their fine British humor. Mayo is as important as Kermode.

  • @Harriett2

Yeah, you need Mayo as the condiment to Kermode's main meal analysis

  • @themostinfluential he is an incredibly honest and direct film reviewer, with a political, social, philosophical conscience. All films have a target audience, as does this one, therefore none are exempt from criticism. Reviewers don't pander to the opinions of the fans. He rightfully slates terrible films, and applauses great ones.

  • this film points out that the slave trade has simply moved up in exclusivity, i mean fair enough if i pay a guy a thousand pound a day to be my slave thats fine, but for me to pay someone that who then pays the slave 20 a day is just stupid and people seem to think that it doesn't count then, basically hotels are the slave pimps

  • I think this is quite a sexist review. I don't notice him calling the gung-ho movies of men chasing each other round foreign countries, imperialist. Nor calling out the bubblegum films that men consume. It's just another - let's bash women and what they do party. Are women always to be doing worthy and intellectual things to avoid being characterised as vacuous?

  • @analyticSynthetic Maybe you should see his review of the Hangover and Hangover 2, before you call him a sexist.

  • 6 people need to give away the flat they forgot about...

  • What a hero!

  • I love this.

  • YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES.

  • @Thompsoninflight Have you seen the film or are you just agreeing withyourself over your vision of female consumer porn?

  • I can't improve on Kermode's points so I'll just say this: This film offended the vagina I don't have. On the class side, I went from a centrist typical normal upper-working clas guy to a Cultural Revolutionary begging to execute Sarah Jessica Parker in a wheat field while reciting lines from the Little Red Book.

How intensly can you satirise consumerism without meaning to?

  • This guy is great. I'm now a fan of this dude and wish I got to see his reviews on a TV show over here in the 'States. Thanks to You Tube I can also access other movie reviews by him.

  • Blame all the designer shoes to the producer... hello product placement.

  • I see the main actresses and two other of the cast have youtube account.

  • This is brilliant. I couldn't agree more with Mark!

  • What's with the guy who keeps asking the stupid questions?

SMART GUY: *makes a very clear point*

OTHER GUY: What do you mean by that?

  • @MurasakiYugata That is Mayo whom is a Doctor of Letters, and a damn fine radio presenter - Respect should be made

  • @MurasakiYugata He is Kermode's comic foil.

  • When I hear those women talking it makes me wish that they were all really deep in the Inferno, and it is raining, and they are experiencing the kind of pain that the world would suffer if it went into labour with a new bastard land of Hell

  • This review and the one for POTC: At World's End top everything else on youtube.
