@mike93stray Thank you very much, I appreciate the compliments. I have no corporate influence or sponsors and I'm not a professional gardener. I'm a Regional Sales Manager for a vitamin company. These sunflowers were volunteers, planted by the Western Scrub Jays... I just transplanted them into my garden from around the property. I have posted some 2011 garden videos for you to enjoy
First let me say thanks for the video. I learned so much from your video. Im down south. It gets really hot here and sunny. Often it's over 90 degrees. Would you suggest watering daily or ever other day? I had also heard that adding coffee grounds will be a good food for them.
@phoenix9ty You are welcome... I don't like to over water sunflowers, they are a very hardy plant. RULE OF THUMB... any plant that has thorns or even the slight bit of roughness on their stalk or stem are hardier than the smooth stemmed plants. Coffee grounds do not add nutrients, but do act more like sand, then clay in your soil.
@phoenix9ty Thank you for your kind words, Sunflowers don't like a lot of water... maybe once a week in 90 degree, twice a week in 100+ temps. Good luck and thanks for watching!
@r3ds0xskilla24 Thank You, and just so you know, I transplanted every one of those sunflowers that were all volunteers from what the Scrub Jays planted. Go figure... I posted a few more videos recently for your viewing pleasure...
This was so helpful I am just beginning to garden so with your advice I will be planting sunflowers. But how do I keep the bees from coming near me? Do I just wait for them to leave?
@MicMic18 Thank you, never shoo bees away, don't ever show anger or fear towards them and they will never bother you. Their main goal is to harvest as much pollen for their hive and are like horses with blinders. If you don't threaten them and just go about your business, they won't bother you.
lovely big garden!i bet you could grow nearly anything in a garden like that!i know what i would be growing anyway&its not s-flowers!although im thinking of getting my 3 daughters to grow a big one each in a sort of competition between em!
@Bdiddly1 Thank you so much, I am very fortunate my mini horse and lots of composting have raised the nutrient level in my soil =) Sunflowers are a lot of fun and grow really fast. What a great idea to have your daughters grow some sunflowers, make sure they have a couple each, just in case one fails, we wouldn't want them to be discouraged gardeners... I have a few new videos I've posted recently that you may like...
@elmrenz Where is your location? Are your seeds crush proof? You can squeeze a seed to see if there is a kernel in it. If it crushes then it won't grow if you feel something in it you've got a chance, then germinate for 24 hours in warm water and plant. I have posted a few new videos recently for your pleasure...
