im a second generation german american, and i love america, i can understand why the world hates us, but i dont give a f*ck, its only natural that you hate the country that leads, but i hate our politicians in charge, those are the americans i think the world should hate, not the american people.
I was born & raised in the USA where I was told to stay ti'l that one day when someone glorious comes my way from far away to take may pain & sorrow away.
I come from Denmark. This song have been greatly misunderstood here (though MANY have understood, I must add...) I LOVE USA. And I love Bruce & all the true heroes of today's music. For people like me, they have been the true inspiration. I wouldn't have been here without people like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Neil Young!!!
The song as a whole ... laments the destabilization of the economics and politics protecting the "industrial working class" in the 1970s and early 1980s, leaving only "a deafening but hollow national pride."
Well you see the mortar fire & poundings of mighty Max Weinberg[world's super acclaimed drummer-E-Street Band] after 3:23 -experience goosebumps. It's simply astouding, electrifying & awesome Bruce [The Boss] rules & truly owns America's heart.
The drumsplayer is so good, that I know only one man in the world, which is as good as this player! The player, which I mean comes from Finland and his name is Mikko Laine!
--maybe it's age, but I never thought that he was THE BOSS. I don't get the whole thing of him as some sort of working class hero.
--Okay, if we all know that it is not one big new national anthem, why does everyone, including Bruce, treat it like one? Treat it like Mellencamp did. Stop pumping your god-damned fists. Stop perpetuating the myth, people. Do you folks realize that you are screaming "My Country Sucks!" out loud with *meaning*?
@Ilguy1868 um I believe THE BOSS knows that it's not a new national anthem... He said it in an interview. The melody makes the song seem like it's a happy song, as that's what the producers wanted, but he wanted it to sound sadder. Look up " 'Born in the USA' live in NY". I also don't think that he saying "My Country Sucks!", he is just stating how much the US "appreciated" Vietnam Vets. I hope you know your history, because Vietnam Vets didn't get a warm welcome when they came home.
Oh, my ex-sister-in-law loves the Boss. She loved him before he got BIG BIG. When he started to be known by everyone, rich and famous, she was so sad that she had to share him. LOL. I only remember from some 30+ years ago my ex-sister-in-law having all new teeth. I didn't know cause I wasn't into the Boss at that time. I wouldn't kick him out of bed either way. Sexy guy!!!
@Enidangel22 You should see mine, whats left of them. And the hair, whats left of it...I'm not one of thoese old dogs with the gut hanging out and hair that appears to be shellacked in place with black shoe polish..."oh boy, there you are"...please, could have fooled me.
However, my fundamental basic personal hygiene is impeccable.
lolw, i find it so funny how so many americans cheer to this song during the 4th of july, yet i bet 90% of them doesn't even know this song is connected to the vietnam war, forget about what its really talking about. how sad: this song is actually ironcially criticizing the american government for treating its veterans bad and for sending them out to the war in the first place. vietnam war, as many know is extremely unpopular, and springsteen was here protesting against it :/
If you pay some attention, this is in no way a patriotic song. This song actually displays - roughly saying - a critical view on the War of Vietnam, also regarding the wretched situation of war veterans in the United States, after the end of the conflict.
@cl2cl I am a former Marine, Vietnam Era (non-combat). No doubt about it some war veterans for various reasons have endured wretched conditions (the human condition). Having said that, most of them are doing quite well.
What makes you such a expert on the subject? Who appointed you to represent war veterans in the
@97448able I'm no specialist on the subject, but it is very known about the drug addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder conditions of most Vietnam veterans in the aftermath - not to mention the POW/MIA issue.
I am glad you, as a Vietnam veteran, are in a comfortable condition, and I wish this was the general situation. That war was extremely weary and harmful to both sides.
@cl2cl As I say I'm Vietnam Era...I'm still recovering from my 13 Months on Okinawa...I was not there ( in the Nam). It is the general situation that by and large Vietnam Combat Veterans are the most educated and succesfull Vets in American History. There are exceptions; however, most of them are not drug addicted, crazed, PTSD psychos roaming across the fruited plain...thats a fact jack.
@97448able This song is no doubt inspired by Springteen's acquaintance with Vietnam Combat Veteran Ron Kovic as was the movie: Born on the fourth of july. Mr. Kovic was originally born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin and was raised in New York. I was born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin in 1955...If you like Siberia in the winter, you will love the place. Mr. Kovic is an activist and unfortunately confined to a wheelchair.
I defer to Mr. Kovic and your experiences/expertise.
@cl2cl The movie is here on Youtube in segments. I have never watched it; except, for opening scene. The little kid growing up (Ron Kovic) is depicted in New York where he was later raised.
Viet Nam war a human tradgedy. A testament to the will and strength of those Combat Vets who came back, moved forward and made something of themselves.
I was not there, don't represent them. Perhaps some can come along and comment.

(Continued from last part) Reagan pretty much adopted this song as an unofficial National Anthem. Bruce is expressing how time was during the Vietnam War, which he was drafted for but failed his physical, and also this song is his dedication to those who fought in the war.
This song is about how Bruce viewed America during the Vietnam war. When he plays this song acoustic, he changes the lyrics from "foreign land" to "Vietnam." People think this is a patriotic song, because that's what Ronald Reagan thought it was. He used the song on his campaigns
You killed the 'yellow man' to stop the spread of communison. If you wanted to be coffee coloured & everyone is the same then yes this is Anti U.S.A.. Maybe Bruce wanted it to be that way. But i am glad that skin is all colors, as if hair!
If i made a song about " born in Sweden" i would have been arrested and charged for rasism ^^ glad that atleast one country can sing about their own country!
Max Weinberg = one of the best drummers ever. I dont care if Joey Jordison can play like a circus monkey, but here we have some spirit, folks, ya know? He drops sticks, he is not right in the tempo, but he has SOME spirit!!!
Yes, "Born in the USA" , but only because my grandparents had a dream and followed it. I need to thank them for thier persevence and determination to make that dream come true.
When you see a performance like this, you know Bruce and the E-Street Band are one of the greatest performing bands around. Its truly incredible! Keep on rocking Bruce... and r.i.p. Clarence
@onemanarmy1593 You misunderstand the lyrics. if you didn't live it you wouldn't know. That's how that they got you back then, you either fight for the country or you do time. It was you patriotic duty. Sort of like what George W. did, if you didn't support the Gulf War effort your weren't a patriot. I'm a Vietnam area vet myself and I feel what he was talking about. You come back and the country treated you like S**t.
@onemanarmy1593 thats implying this is a patriotic song, its not. intact it points out our flaws, specifically how we treated vietnam veterans terribly.
@MrJhm19 I know that the song is not patriotic due to the fact that I have ears to listen to the lyrics and I am able to interpret those lyrics, it was a joke. Keyboard warriors taking things too literally.
@onemanarmy1593 well it's a commonly misinterpreted song so how was i supposed to know you were joking? people in the 80's had ears too and they didn't understand it. and i wasn't trying to be a "keyboard warrior", i was just trying to help you understand the song better, don't be such a dick.
WTF people?! it makes me sad that this anthem by the BOSS only receives 247.417 views and 11 fools dislike it... and MYLEY CIRUS freacking receives 240.000.000 for holly shit party in the usa?
@rokkenroll And to think that idiot Ronnie Ray-Gun wanted to use it in his campaign to be reelected, But Bruce said No Fuckin Way !!! Actually I think he was nicer than that but he shouldnt have been...
@rokkenroll I think that the take away is, the world perceives America as an "Ivory tower", but we have our struggles too.......despite all that, the tone of the song is of pride. Perhaps thats just my take away but I can see how it could be interperted otherwise.
@rokkenroll Although I'm not american, I def do understand the Boss! Seems as if you don't...no wait it's obvious you don't! Stop being ignorant and listen to the entire lyrics, trying not to focus on the USA as the core of all evil! Perhaps it'll change your mind. In case it doesn't, you deserve my condolence!
@rokkenroll@rokkenroll Although I'm not american, I def do understand the Boss! Seems as if you don't...no wait it's obvious you don't! Stop being ignorant and listen to the entire lyrics, trying not to focus on the USA as the core of all evil! Perhaps it'll change your mind. In case it doesn't, you deserve my condolence!
@rokkenroll It is patriotic in so much as "I love my country, but I hate these parts about it". Same as I am a proud patriotic British citizen, but there is plenty wrong with the UK at the moment that makes me ashamed to be British. The Boss is simply trying to convey that it's not all rosy and bright in the USA. Doesn't stop him being patriotic though.
@rokkenroll And that is the most intelligent thing I've seen on this song in some time. And there was a LOT of shit about America when he wrote this song.
@rokkenroll It is most certainly a patriotic song.. In fact, it cannot be any more patriotic.. Yes, he's saying it's ***ked up, but it's still mine, and we, unlike everybody else in the world, have the power to fix it.. There's a reason the album sold a gazillion copies..
@rokkenroll your retarded its not a direct attack whatsoever hes sayin hes born in the usa and those are the realities that your stuck with as living here. but hes still proud of being an american and those no better place on earth. so go back to russia you commie bastard
@joshben126 I second that !!!! This song personifies what is great about America -- having the freedom to say something sucks without fear of government retribution.
@rokkenroll The meaning of the song has also flown over your head. The song is a statement on the Vietnam War, not on the USA as a whole as you seem to think.
"In 1981 director Paul Schrader sent me a script called Born in the U.S.A...He wanted me to come up with some music for the film. But the script sat on my writing table until one day I was singing a new song I was writing called Vietnam. I looked over and sang off the top of Paul's cover page, I was born in the U.S.A."
@cupacat "his Politics meen shit he should shut up and sing...................." and should the Russians have just 'shut up and sing' under the Soviets? Springsteen's politics are about being blue collar, as are his songs. You can't separate the two
@rokkenroll...it's patriotic in the sense that he was trying to raise awareness of what went on during that time, how the soldiers were treated when they returned which anyone with half a brain could've realized that Vietnam was going to be a disaster. So Bruce made a political statement that needed to be made.
great version and damn bruce has a nice guitar. is it me or is this slightly faster than the album version? and 4 any1 hoo duznt know this song is about the way the vietnam vets were treat wen they came back 2 america after the war. listen 2 the verses and u'll understand the lyrics
You say Jonas Brothers, I say The Rolling Stones
You say Justin Bieber, i say Queen
You say Taylor Swift, i say Guns & Roses
95% of teens these days listen to the same crappy pop songs over and over. if your one of the 5% left who still listen to real music, thunb this up, then copy and paste it to least 5 videos
basic dribble, yank style which is drab and so boring. Shame such a big country has so basic musicians, Boring.

The meaning of this song is really flying over peoples heads
"Got in a little hometown jam so they put a rifle in my hand Sent me off to a foreign land to go and kill the yellow man Born in the U.S.A."
How could you ever interpet this as patriotic? It's a direct attack on everything that's shit about America.

Either way - Superb song!
BigPete007 7 months ago 2
@rokkenroll And that is the most intelligent thing I've seen on this song in some time. And there was a LOT of shit about America when he wrote this song.
007guy19 7 months ago
@rokkenroll It is most certainly a patriotic song.. In fact, it cannot be any more patriotic.. Yes, he's saying it's ***ked up, but it's still mine, and we, unlike everybody else in the world, have the power to fix it.. There's a reason the album sold a gazillion copies..

I looked over and sang off the top of Paul's cover page, I was born in the U.S.A."

cupacat 5 months ago
@cupacat "his Politics meen shit he should shut up and sing...................." and should the Russians have just 'shut up and sing' under the Soviets? Springsteen's politics are about being blue collar, as are his songs. You can't separate the two

@rokkenroll are you implying America is shit? Cus thats how i interpreted your comment. And yes we know what this song was written about.

@rokkenroll screw that shit, the Gooks were evil unhumane commies that deserved every bullet they got
FightWorldGovernment 3 months ago
@rokkenroll...it's patriotic in the sense that he was trying to raise awareness of what went on during that time, how the soldiers were treated when they returned which anyone with half a brain could've realized that Vietnam was going to be a disaster. So Bruce made a political statement that needed to be made.
