Japanese tastes (or a good bit of them) go towards the cute. Cuteness has a large impact on Japanese culture at large; heck, even their police stations sometimes have cute little anime mascots.

I certainly know that it's far from unheard of for a maid cafe to have non-Japanese maids working at them (I remember reading a story about tourists trying out a maid cafe, and lamenting the fact that they got stuck with a maid that, while Asian, was clearly not Japanese... apparently she was the only one there that spoke English).

I don't know what this PARTICULAR maid cafe's policy would be on an American maid... but at the very least, I doubt they'd take offense.

Went to one in Japan, and learned that you NEED to be fluent in Japanese to enjoy them (even the "English Friendly" ones). Otherwise it'll have the opposite effect and depress ya. I even tried that Popopure place that claims it has English speaking maids. When I got there the maids suddenly became uncomfortable with me and the language barrier and with the slow service I never saw the english speaking maid. Eventually I had to walk out before I could order anything. :(

I saw one in Akihabara. It was the weirdest thing because I thought it would be on a main street at ground level, but in fact I had to go off into an alley and then take a nondescript elevator to the fourth, fifth, or sixth floor depending on the cafe... When I got there a "genki girl" ran toward the sound of the elevator bowing to me, smiling, and talking in an high-pitched, uber-cute voice, and there was a pink room with a bunch of old businessmen in suits staring at me. That's when I left.
