In rough drafts of storylines the Derek saga would have continued through the spring of 2000(ending very explosively with Ben saving Meg's life)and Maria letting Ben go and falling madly in love with a sexy stranger who then would lead her on some crazy romantic adventure. They were also planning on recasting Benjy(Chase Parker was terrible).

The Ben/Meg/Maria triangle had played itself out months before the show ended and TPTB would have kept Ben and Meg together and Maria would have finally gotten a new storyline with a new love interest(I don't think it would have been Ross English though). I have it in good authority(I now personally know one of the former SB writers) who has spilled the beans on what they were planning to do through summer of 2001(if the show hadn't been cancelled).

If Ben and Maria was so perfect and their love was so deep that why Ben was able to fall in love in another woman so much and leaves Maria for her?And why Derek was able break them apart? Maria made his life happy and easy but not complete! Nobody and nothing can touch the love that ben and meg shared together, not annie,tim, derek, tess, benji even not Maria.And no matter what Ben didn`t fall in love with Maria again!

Actually Ben and Meg made Sunset Beach and the audience have always prefered the love and chemistry beetwen Ben and Meg! Me too! know Ben loved Maria deeply but I think the main reason that he couldn't get Maria out of his head for the 4 years was not only down to love, but because Ben had this huge sense of guilt like it was his fault Maria died. And after Palm`s Springs he was torn beetwen his big love for Meg, love for Benji and obligation to Maria.

He knew how much Maria have suffered because of his love for Meg, because of not remembering Beji, and try to help her deal with it! The fact is that Ben was never Maria`s after this boat accident! We can see Ben and Meg's chemistry right from the word go and I for one couldn't wait for them to be together. Everything was building up to that moment. And I don't think it's possible to say Ben loved Maria more than he loved Meg.He ended up with Meg because he loved her and she was his only one !

I agree he did love Maria once but I think after she had been gone so long, and after he met meg, he changed and he only deeply cared for Maria as he says, but didn't actually love her anymore. You just have to look at the scenes where Derek was impersonating Ben and had him behind that mirror to see how much Ben loved Meg. And the way he tells her she is the only woman he loves, not Maria, and he actually says this to Maria too.
