Thanks for showing us the music that precedes the aria. It makes much more sense... Never liked Fleming too much beforebut now I am sooooooooooooooo impressed. Brava! What an extraordinary interpretation.
OH my! I've listened to her other performances of this same song, BUT I'm listening to this particular performance, and she sounds so much more real, like she's signing from experience, like she is the Mermaid! Like shes backing-up the vocal performance with feelings, and emotion. WOW! Thanks for uploading! BRAVO!
She has said in her autobiography that this aria open the door in many ways into her subsequent success as a singer. Apparently she feels a special affinity for it and considers it most suitable to her temperament and voice.
Femming has a tendency to wallow in emotion when doing this aria. Here she does less of that and produces a beautiful performance. Even those who do not like some of the liberties she takes must admit that her voice is a ravishing instrument.
Ignore the slly staging. Her performance is breathtaking, including that final high B flat, held much longer even than any of her versions on YouTube. Notice the breathless, almost stunned silence before the applause? About the most sincere tribute an audience can bestow.
@Hessingen1 Chacun au son gout. Staging doesn't really bother me, anyway, since I can always close my eyes; I pay no (visual) attention to dancing conductors or grimacing pianists either. There is so much good performance work done these days that it seems ungrateful to carp about a single element of a production--especially if the music is first-rate. Du holde Kunst....likewise regards. :<)
The singing; the voice; the staging cannot do any wrong here; She sings right out of her heart .Any staging would do. This one does it beuatifully. When the voice and soul says it all, the staging matters less.
@urmorph I have to agree @8:53 that final note is nothing short of amazing. When a great soprano is doing her thing it is nothing short of amazing. I wish I could sing like that!
How many moons, two or four? And why does the father wear a suit only to have to wade through a pool of water? Meanwhile the nymph's nightdress or whatever it is gets saturated with about 6 inches of water. Why she needs to wring another sheet while singing is also a mystery.
But beyond such distractions, Fleming sure gets a lot out of this aria, a longer Bb for sure and little expressive scoops that most sopranos wouldn't dare to try.
Brava. Flawless. I don't think this aria can survive a concert rendition. I watch them all the time looking for the right interpretation, but it has to be in a staged production to get it right. Way to go Renée!
Every time I listen to this, I crash.

High B flat was a little too long for me but I still thouht it was brilliant

Assolutamente divina! E' la soprano attuale che più assomiglia a Renata Tebaldi e la miglior Rusalka di sempre. Grazie!

It's different from her fantastic cd of Rusalka but the stage is more real.

Performance Out of this World. Cannot speak a word of Czech, and still I can hear
RF knows and feels every word she sings. Transcendental. Contemporary staging
fits perfectly.

Has anyone ever seen this is England?
May I ask how hard is it to understand? How do they manage with the language barrier?

@OperaLover84 I'm sorry I'm not that good at notes and stuff, when exactly is she singing this high Bb you're referring to? :)

@HigherHighSymphony It's that last high note she holds right at the end.

@OperaLover84 Thanks very much :) Yes, that is indeed very impressive :D

I agree. She does take liberties - but she takes them beautifully! It takes a harder man than I am not to be seduced by such a performance!

@urmorph Hello,
Breathtaking, indeed. Staging, no, not silly at all - contemporary classic style,
very simple, with technical details, such as the lamps. I would say, it really works!

I quite like Fleming, with that rich voice, but Lucia Popp is to me the standard for this aria
gretelc 3 years ago
It seems to be popular today to take a composer's creation and twist it into something totally unrecognizable from the original libretto.

Fleming does a great job at this aria... but I cant' get myself to like this opera... I think it's kinda boring and uneventful.
