IMHO I would suggest C# over Java since its way easier to get started with (just download a free VS Express), it has nice easy to understand and use forms designer (wheres with Java it depends on IDE and both Netbeans and Eclipse are terrible compared to VS), and better online support and tutorials. Plus if you are a windows you compile C# into standalone executable files wheres Java more of a tool/additional language you would use with some web stuff.

i started with actionscript 3.0 a month ago

why?becouse i first wanted to make cartoons

and i searched "how to make cartoons"

the result was flash cs4

then i started to make some animations and it was so easy

next i heard about actionscript 3.0 and that's my story

If I learn a language on unix, will it be easy for me to learn the Windows version? Would the Unix version be useful in the long run?

@UNR3S7 This is religious question. You might as well me asking me if I should be a Jew or a Cristian. :-).

Anyway I wouldn't think of it as Windows vs Unix. I would think of it as what kind of software do I want to write? If you want to write PHP websites you might want to learn Unix (specifically Linux). If however you want to write iPhone applications then you should learn Mac OS (which is Unix by the way). If you want to become a PC game programmer then you need to learn Windows.

I started off on batch...then html...then VB...then C#...then Java...then C++...my mistake was learning batch before everything and learning Java before C++...but really after the 3rd language it was easier and I was able to compare to other languages and learn more on my own then relying on other people to teach me.
