Thanks for a great video like this that raises awareness of the great things happening in Denton and all over the nation at the collegiate jazz level. I'm currently a freshman saxophonist at North Texas and I get the privilege of hearing One O' Clock on a regular basis, and those guys definitely deserve a Grammy.
@JazzVideoGuy I've been a jazz trombonist since high school. I'm not actively playing at this time, but I played in college, grad school, and was even in a salsa band in Kansas City for a time. Did a little combo playing in high school as well. Recently I've been more focused on the academic side of my education, but I can "walk the walk." :)
@JazzVideoGuy Jenny IS terrific. UNT is very fortunate to have her. I attended the University of Idaho with her, where believe it or not there is quite the kicking jazz program.
@JazzVideoGuy My friend is Jenny Kellogg, she's the trombonist who can be seen warming up in the background at the beginning of the video and I believe she's the solo chair in the One O'Clock.
I am in the first year of my Ph.D. in musicology; I wrote my Master's thesis on Duke Ellington and how his work impacted racial and social change while he was alive. I study jazz as a "moral compass" and the role it played leading up to the civil rights movement, bebop as coded language, etc.
@lawrencevelogirl Your friend Jenny isa fabulous trombonist, and a lovely person, as well. Look for more Jenny video coming soon. Your work sounds important, putting Jazz in a more social context.
I think one of the main reasons the Grammy's don't feature jazz during the TV spot is because the main population of the U.S. has too short of an attention span. They are used to hearing 3-4 min. songs that repeat them selves a few times and then it is over. 4-10+ jazz tunes are way out of the picture for most people. Being a huge jazz fan and player I fell that out music should be featured at the Grammy's more.
@Joebone18974 You make an excellent point. I fight that same battle on my YouTube channel, as I must fight to keep the attention of my viewers, who can easily click on another video.
It was beyond cool to see a dear friend of mine in the background of this vid.
I'm a musicologist, so I study music from an academic perspective. Musicologists are musicians first, bookworms second. My field is FINALLY beginning to accept jazz as a valid subfield for research and study, after decades of rejecting it as "niche."
So I'm saying there's hope. When I play 3rd trombone in a big band, that's my happy place. I'll keep writing about jazz if you keep making videos! :)
Thanks for all the promotion "Jazz Video Guy", didn't really get to talk to you much but I was the lead trumpet player. Thanks for all you do to promote live jazz!
I'm 17 years old and have been fighting to get jazz on the Grammy's for 6 years. I've played sax for 5 years but was introduced to jazz as a young kid (about 4 or 5 by my grandpa). But ive only been improvising and playing jazz for about 3 years now. I try to get kids my age hooked on jazz and for the past week I've played "The Last Theme Song" by UNT and thats gotten at least a few of my friends interested. Hope I can get more kids my age to listen to jazz
@ItsKloose Welcome to the party. Just keep playing the music for your friends. Some will like it immediately, some will hear later and get the message, and some will never hear it. But you are the future, my friend. Do you play alto or tenor and where are you based?
@JazzVideoGuy I play all saxes (alto, ten, bari, sop.) in my high school jazz big band and combos. I'm also slowly getting into flute and clarinet. And also for wind ensemble I play bassoon, which I had to self teach myself 2 years ago. I'm out west in Fresno, CA
@JazzVideoGuy sorry, to clarify, I'm playing lead tenor in the big band, alto and soprano in the combos, and bari in another combo were my director has me playing some flute too (which hopefully can eventually become a Latin Combo, but we hardly get any $)
Although they proclaim Grammy's are not based on sales we all know that is not true. It was refreshing to see Esperanza Spalding beat out Justin Bieber though!
@JazzVideoGuy Perhaps not so much sales as it is public awareness. In my opinion there is no way Esperanza Spalding would have won if she hadn't earlier been invited to the White House by Obama to perform. But that's the beauty of Youtube now... we have people like you raising awareness on talents that people would not otherwise have kown about! I now know who the One O'Clock Lab Band from North Texas U is!
The Grammy's give awards to the music that sells the most, not necessarily looking at the quality of the music being produced. It's like McDonalds, it sells the most but is that food good for you? It's one of the problems with our society, we often want things too fast & easy without much thought in obtaining them, much like most of the music given awards at the Grammy's. Thanks for your thoughts Bret!
Is that possible that even if there is the business people who consider jazz a niche and not so lucrative as pop, there is also a conservative community of jazz musicians that like to keep jazz more underground, and "not for everyone"? MTV presents College Jazz Grammys 2012 . That would be funny!
Thanks for turning me on to the some college Big Bands. I will check out the One O'Clock Lab Band. I agree there really is no reason why these musicians should not be able to throw their hat into the ring! Crisp and tight sound! Yeah what is going on with the exclusion of Latin Jazz?! The "process" needs more illumination. Great video. It appears to me that some of the fat cats are all about profit, and not lovers of fine music! Jazz is deserving of the spotlight! Give the drummer some!
thanks !
