@jazzscherzo It's your (valid) opinion! When I say "music roots knowledgeable performer" I mean that Janet has more knowledge of music foundations / history than many of today's performers, specially due to her personal / professional background (she had contact / worked closely with some of today's music legends: her brothers, Quincy Jones, Herb Alpert and many, many others)! Apart from being a phenomenal skilled actress!...
@jazzscherzo You forgot to mention Chaka! I agree with you to some extent! But a strong criterion that still is applied these days is the sales factor! Although Anita did in fact have an excelent album she really did well commercially that year! We usually tend to minify Janet's smooth voice, talent and work but I only wish that many of nowadays artists had just half of her qualities as a music roots knowledgeable performer!...
when I heard "Sweet Love" for the first time, I knew that one day she would win some Grammys, so I wasnt surprised at all that she won. I was more impressed with the nominees that she was competing against...the Arethas, the Pattis, and Chakas...THAT was more impressive than anything else to me. And her reaction, was "Priceless". I love that song, by the way...lol
this was a great time in RnB, also a turning point 4 the grammys in the best rnb female category. 4 a while it was Aretha's category, then Nat. Coles, the mid 80's were Chaka's and then Anita took the late 80's
@TheCmelmoneyman i kinda think she could.! plus she did her own take on anita's sweet love it was aaamaazing bey juss doesnt show it buh she def. can baby.!
How bout, they were screeeeaming her name b4 he announced it, then the volume shot up afterwards...I have on quality headphones so uh, yeah...Suh-weet! I remember the night I watched it, I was screaming right along with the audience on TV! : D
SHE GAVE ALL PRAISE TO GOD FROM FIRST RESPONSE WITH THOSE HANDS RAISED! LOVE IT AND THEN SHE NEAR ABOUT SHOUTED AND DANCED IN PAUSES ON HER WAY TO THE STAGE AND THEN ENDED IT POWERFULLY WITH "THANK YOU JESUS!" Beautiful . .. Power. the only way you stand.
I remember this night. In a category PACKED with R & B female heavy hitters...she really, really deserved every award she got for Rapture (and should have gotten them for Songstress). Too bad the Grammys have been hijacked by ridiculous situations where 1 person walks away with arms full of awards while others get nothing....
Does anyone notice that none of the other nominees were there? They must've known it was Anita's. lol

Amen...but I do like how they don't have single-song performances competing with album performances anymore. That was pretty stupid.
