one thing i have always found curious about the building of katas in most japanese martial arts is the idea of switching direction to deal with attackers on different sides. If one is beset on all sides the fight will be much more confused and complicated and this excercise does not help to deal with this actual tactical situation.
The defender does not close the distance to any attacker in order to momentarily enlarge the distance to the others, thereby dictating the timing of the fight and allowing to deal with one assailant at a time. Even though the sword shown here is a relatively long weapon for japanese standards (odachi? nodachi?) the range of the attacks is still relatively limited and an assailant can take a lot of time to close the distance to the side or back.
I realise it's 'just' an excercise, and that is fine, but why mention the multiple attackers if it's just to get people to turn around and learn to flow from one position to the other without losing precision...? (which is an important exercise) These are very usefull to position multiple students in one room, but are they a serious tactical scenario to be taught as such?
@KKZReset11 While admittedly the "white" guy might look funny dressed in his Jap garb, your statement has to do with swords, which is actually quite ignorant, the Caucasians have been fighting this way for two thousand years,
@KKZReset11 It's ironic that people say white people are totally ignorant to everybody's culture, and then people like you come on here and say they love everybody else' s culture not their own.--Whats going on is that we are elite worldly intelligent minds, and your third world primitive brain doesn't understand the concept of reaching beyond ones own self to explore the world around you. You're just a primitive white hating monkey.
@KKZReset11 Wrong! Many people hate their own country others love it, the ones who hate it are the ones who see that the future of their dreams would reach highier places in other countries, thus hating the prison he lived in untill hes 18 or more.
If you actually have it a thought you'd realize that what you said is purely and simply ignorant and stupid.
@KKZReset11 Every single race and culture, especially Europeans and whites, have some kind of sword and a martial art to go with it. The European longsword is an especially versatile weapon.
If you're going to throw around insults, at the very least try to seem intelligent.
I have not watched the other videos in this series.....
The happo-giri, eight direction cutting practice, which the demonstration shown resembles in pattern (although less so in the detail) has absolutely nothing to do cutting down anybody. It is a method to stabilise the hips whilst turning correctly. It is also particularly useful for correcting incorrect shifting of weight onto the back foot when practising shiho-nage, a problem which renders that particular technique somewhat ineffective.
The thing with shomenuchi is that it leaves you open for a body strike. The tsuki is much harder to counter, but it seems that it would be better if you were to switch to a back stance for the thrust- or the Hirazuki technique.
I'm 23 years old and have yet to be defeated by a master of any level of swordsmanship. Why? Because although I study and appreciate all styles, I use none of them in particular. I was teaching advanced forms and techniques at 16, so I don't want anyone giving me lip. The Katana is the most efficient close range killing tool there is, (Even more than a gun, which fires in one direction while the sword is constantly changing angles) Such a weapon is built to ebb and flow, not chop and poke.
@belisariusorb I would take you up on that challenge in an instant were I not in the states right now... YOU would give me a challenge, and I love a good challenge, it's the only way to learn. If you ever find yourself in the U.S. look me up. Whether I win or lose I love the contest. ...I hated to sound pompus in what I said, but I'm very confident in my style and the release of tradition seems to free me.
@belisariusorb I'm adding you as a friend on this youtube. To ellaborate upon what I said before, it's not as if I go about swinging my sword with no thought of form, I have studied many styles and use pieces from each, but I try to be more fluid than the teacher here. You would likely beat him too. I appreciate your challenge and as I said, I accept. Although it may be some time before we can. lol.
Unfortunately, though he may be an adequate swordsman, forms like these are why many people get stuck in the basics for years. I have studied more than twelve styles in my relatively short lifespan and I can proudly say that I do NOT stick to any of them. Style will get you killed. Use what works and what you know, and please... Don't go practicing your preschool kata system for too long after you learn to cut properly. It wastes time you could be using on advanced technique.
Why you bother posting all that bullshit. You realy did think someone would belive you? If you are "yet to be defeated" it is only because there is no duel anymore. Grow up and stop dreaming about been a samurai.
What a pitty to display so much arrogance at that late age. For your own good, i hope you grow more humble fast.
Also your so called "advenced technique" are the actual waste of time. For reference see Go Rin No Sho.
Kendo is the kind of education system and techniques like Judo, based on Ken-jutsu, as the sport it has some rules and matches. The spiritual training and the science of defense are the main of Aikido but some schools have the ken-jutsu, and they assume the actual combat, real Katanas, very practicable, be killed without fail. .
Good vid, But just two things that kinda came to attension was that you should not push with your right hand when you strike. It makes you immobile and it just looks terrible. 2nd is to think about your hands, your fingers are all over the place. Always frim grip with you pinky and ringfinger.
This is not combat sword work. These are developed to use ki on the move using a bokken. Not defense or attack. Just exercise. It shouldn't be made into anything more or less. This is the first bokken kata and is basic. Come on people, don't compare this to kenjutsu or any sword school.
You losing your strong hand when bring up the katana for faster acceleration. And then put pressure on it to make the force stronger as you go down and strike. Good vid.

doesnt even a wooden training katana need a guard to be affective for not cutting your fingers off? and errm well.. i duno GUARDING hits and keeping the blade balanced
An effective block in Kenjutsu typically involves the opponent's blade sliding off the defender's. It is a redirection of energy, and actually alot of Kenjutsu and Iaijutsu schools tend to shy away from touching blades together, so in reality no handguard is needed. For example, Miyamoto Musashi used a bokuto or suburito for a majority of his duels. Bokken are designed to be balanced as it is so that isnt an issue. There are only a few instances where a tsuba is needed.

Since Aikido is a relatively new art (definately after 1860) that would make this sword work that he is doing is not a koryu style, correct?
If it's not a koryu art, then it's absolutely useless.
Aikido shouldn't have it's own sword techniques; you should leave that to Mugai Ryu, Jigen Ryu, Itto Ryu, etc.
