  • How are Ellen Degeneres and Jay Z comparable to Shakespeare?

  • every time i watch this video. agh. THAT IS TWO MINUTES FROM MY HOUSE. the container store is next to a mall. MY mall. ughhhh. ughh. why couldnt i have been a nerdfighter then? GAH.

  • I love reading his books and coming across stuff from them that he also put into his videos ie there will be no humans to remember that we existed TFiOS.

  • My silverback gorillas? Niel Gaiman and Sarah Rees Brennan. I want to write something that may not be popular or known to many, but the people that do read it, will love it. Niel Gaiman, I realize, is very popular, but I still respect him and think what he does is amazing. You, John also fit into this category, but as a nerdfighter who has donated to several charities and who has done everything she can to make the world a better place, I feel that if you knew me, I would have that.

  • My silver backed Gorillas (yes there are multiple) actually are Hank, Alex Day and Charlie McDonnell.

Not that I do NOT admire you a lot John - I do. Thing is I wanna make music on Youtube. And eventhough you do waesome stuff on Youtube - you don't make music.

Like you guys (I almost said the L word...)

    DFTBA

  • UFO being said like that is a thing in germany - we don't spell it out. It's just a word :)

  • Hehehehe. Same ideas in TFiOS. 1:05

  • My silver backed gorilla is Winston Churchill. I know he's dead, but I'd like to think he might have respected me.

  • my silver backed gorilla is rachel maddow. just saying.

  • One Real World cast member is super wealthy. His name is Mike Mizanin and he's a WWE wrestler. But he's also the only one.

  • HA! John Green came to the same conclusion I did. Except I used the word "love" instead of respect.

  • @TheInspirationExpert Me too. But I said that people wanna be liked xD

  • I have a couple of silverback gorillas, this guy you may have heard of, John Green and there are some musicians out there, probably Jordan Rudess and Rick Wakeman. I hold a lot of respect for my piano teacher though, He's my main silverback gorilla that i know personally

  • Christopher Paolini

    and

    the Gower Brothers

  • The Great One J.K. Rowling

  • @EvolutionaryPsyche Absolutely<3

  • david tennant, and or neil Patrick harris

  • Who's Lauren Conrad?

  • i'm watching this 2 yrs and 1 day after you posted this. jsyk. DFTBA

  • You are the silver back gorilla of my jungle. I, like so many other awesome nerdfighters, want to be a professional writer some day. And of course there is some personal gain for reason, but my primary hopes is that the world will suck just a little bit less after I have left. You're books have taught me greatly about the importance of message and being able to find a voice to amplify that message louder than your vocal cords could.

    TFBA

    Thanks for being awesome.

  • The Fault in Our Stars content!

  • lauren conrad is my friend's cousin.... lol I'm going to show her this

  • Did John run over someone at 3:24 because he wasn't looking at the road?

  • @CherryLaxative you sir, have made my day.

  • I'd say you and Hank are some people I'd like respect from :)

  • PLEASE COME BACK TO CINCINNATI. Gah still kinda angry that that mall is five minutes away from my house.

  • John, oofoe is already a thing in my family :)

  • As a future teacher, I appreciate the reference to my future fame. =)

  • *gasp* The Container Store AND the Yeti's voice? Did Christmas come early?! :-)

  • My silver back gorillas would have to be my favorite writers. If Geoff Johns walked up to me and said "Hey, I like what you're doing. Keep at it," I would undoubtedly have a nerdgasm. If Mark Waid told me "You're awesome," I would explode. If the most silver backed of them all, John Green, came up to me and said "You definitely did not FTBA. Best wishes," I'd do my happy dance.

  • you are reaspected, you are one of three authors who's comments are on the back cover of the hunger games, the other two authors being stephen king and stephanie meyers

  • John, you and Hank are my silverback gorilla's

  • I think that mine would have to be Neil Gaiman, not just because of how brilliant a writer he is but he seems to be genuinely lovely as a person too. There are loads of other people who I admire (John and Hank are pretty high up there obviously :D), but he's at the top for me.

  • My silverback Gorilla(s) would be: John and Hank Green (of course) Colin Mochrey, Ryan Stiles, Chester Bennington, and Amy Lee

  • First; Fame is an awesome television show. Second; I'd love the respect of Michael J. Fox, for he is my husband.

  • The Hectic Glow, obviously!

  • Jay Z? seriously? Respect metre for john green Depleating.

  • English teachers will be remembered longer than people who are famous today... John, PLEASE be my English teacher!

  • Sarah has a very pretty voice. I say this in the most non-creepy way possible.

  • My silverback gorillas include John, Hank, Mike Patton, Buzz Osborne, and Tomas Kalnoky. Just sayin'.

  • Ellen Degeneres is absolutely my Silverback Gorilla. Good call, how did you know? :-D Also Terry Pratchett!

  • @paixe Terry Pratchett!! :D

  • Helen hunt would obviously trump all other silverback gorillas

  • Either Hank or Erwin Schrodinger

  • Miss Mehl

  • My dad. He's a tough guy to get respect from. He's a realist and is always questioning my decisions to make sure I'm not staying in the clouds. It would mean the world to me for him to at least acknowledge something I accomplish.

    Nerdfighters are awesome, just sayin'.

  • "Who's your silverback gorilla?" DUH you!

  • My SG is WheezyWaiter. (The closest I got to him respecting me is him featuring my wink on one of his videos, which is titles "SPARKLEGATE".)

  • in german we say Ufo (like you said) and not U F O

  • @ArchitectsWearBlack This is why john loves your language.

  • Mine are Hank and John <3

  • Hm.

Tim Burton. Tim Burton's my silverback gorilla. I've grown up with his films and his shorts and his poems and his art, and he's been a real inspiration to me for a really long time.

But my backup silverbacks (Greybacks? Bronzebacks? Bronzebacks.) would include Hank Green, John Green, J.K. Rowling, and Demetri Martin.

    ...And GLaDOS.

(Really? Did you just say GLaDOS was one of your bronzeback gorillas?)

Yes. But it's not because of the neurotoxin or anything. She's just in it for the science.

  • Nerds and Nerdfighters.

  • Who's Lauren?

  • Double Yay Cincinnati. I'd say I have three Silverback Gorillas. John Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and my own high school creative writing teacher, Scott Revis. I think I'm doing just fine with that grouping.

  • YAY CINCINNATI!

  • Even though I may not have a job next year, thank you for reaffirming my desire to teach. I love my job <3

  • Todd Haberkorn is my silverbacked gorilla.

  • I honestly cant think of anyone I am out to impress, I have no silver back gorilla. Odd

  • mozart is my silverback gorilla

  • Douglas Adams, but he's gone. So Kurt Vonnegut, but he's gone. So Salvador Dali, but he's gone.

All my Silverback Gorillas are dead.

  • @TheMontypythonfan mine too... John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, George Harrison are my silverack gorillas

  • YES!!!!!! I live in Cincinnati!

  • 3:24

John runs over the last puppy-sized elephant in the world.

  • Or more like 3:23.

  • John Green

  • J.K Rowling. She is the reason I want to be a writer. I want my books to inspire young people like hers do.

  • I would have to say my older sisters

  • David Bowie c=

  • I was distracted most of the time while watching this video.

Contrary to what the movies show, your highways do have trees and industries next to them, not just desert or farmland.

I saw no lampposts however. Are your highways pitch black when there's no moon?

  • @najahe123 yeah, most people just put their headlights on, even though I think in some places there are lights, but there are very few. Thanks for pointing that out, I'm American and I've never thought about it that much!

  • That is five minutes from my house, if only I knew

  • You

  • Tom Milsom's my silver-back gorilla :)

  • Most of my silver-backed gorillas are either people I know personally (like my Dad and lots of my friends), fictional (The Doctor! And Sherlock Holmes!), or dead (Tolkein, Galileo, ect.)

But I do have a few living, recognizable exceptions, including the vlogbrothers and Steven Moffat!

  • Truthfully, I want respect from you, Hank, Maureen and JK (I'm assuming that last names will not be needed, since three of these names are universal in the nerdfighter community, and one is universal in nerds period). I'd also love it from names like Chris Jericho, Sebastian Bach, Joey Belladonna, Lewis Black and Raven... sadly, alot of my heroes have died in my lifetime... why did I go into a field where people die of drug OD's all the time?

  • i hate the STARS ARE JUST LIKE US! in magazines. of course they're like us! what do you expect them to be doing?

  • A lovely lady whom I call "The Queen." She was my sophomore English teacher, is a great role model and a fantastic friend. :D

  • The Yeti has a very nice voice :)

  • I work at The Container Store! French the llama, elfa for the win!

  • *In no order*

    You and Hank

    My 8th grade english teacher

    My family

    My peers

Scott Westerfield, Markus Zusak, Neal Shusterman, Maureen Johnson, Laurie Halse Anderson, and basically all of my favorite YA authors

  • AAAAAH JOHN DOES MATH WITHOUT DANIEL BISS IN THIS VIDEO

  • Now in Germany UFO is pronounced axactly like you said it xD

There are so many I can't name them all here^^

PS: YAY for new closet! [well, now old but..]

  • you, Hank, Lauren Fairweather, Matt Maggiacomo, Kristina Horner, Luke Conard, Alex Carpenter, the DeGeorge brothers, Team Starkid, Maureen Johnson, Regina Spektor, and Lucy Wainwright-Roache.

  • shigura miyamoto

    created many nintendo games

  • My high school English teacher is defiantly my silverbacks gorilla, you are so right about teachers meaning more to someone than celebrities.

  • my mom is Japanese and she pronounces it youfo

  • John..... Will you be my silverback gorilla? :)

  • lol we pronounce ufo

    uuuufo in my country ;)

  • YETI VOICE

  • I really want respect from everyone to some degree I think. I just want to be a well liked, well respected person. But of course I'm MORE concerned with getting respect from the people I admire, like you and Hank and Charlie and Alex, than people I really don't respect, like Brittany Spears.

  • Dude! Cincinnati!

  • I kind of want to be an English teacher now.

  • john green, hank green.......oh and C.s Lewis

  • There are a lot of people I would want respect from. You're one of them and so is your brother. Kurt Vonnegut would be nice but Kurt Vonnegut is dead. I'll settle for Johnen Vasquez and Neil Gaiman. Now I know this will never happen because science makes my head hurt but I if Michio Kaku for some reason respected me for god knows what I would probably shit my pants until I died of dehydration.

  • "If you want to be famous, be a teacher" and that's kinda one of the reasons I'm an education major. I want to affect people. Say a teacher has 20 students per class and 6 classes per year. That's 120 students a year (on the conservative side) for 30 years. That's 3,600 students. That's an amazing number of people that one person can affect.

  • You and Hank, and possibly J.K. Rowling.

  • Maybe its to have a feeling of largeness. i mean in such a vast universe when you think about it celebrities seem to be held as a larger kind of person. being well known also being a measurement in size. we are human. we like size the thing is that once we knew how big our universe is and how small we are in it, and that we can never leave marks or be remembered forever, you just want a second of feeling important, and a bit bigger then some one else. its why we like tall people. like shaq.

  • Stephen Fry, if he respected what I was doing I would be very happy.

  • That's Kenwood Towne Centre in the background! I was a security officer when you visited that mall!

  • I want respect from you and Hank. That's all. :)

Oh, and pretty much everyone else who means anything to me.

  • "I guess we should call him... crawlspace boy" :D

  • Oh, just this kinda indie author called John Green. He's no big deal or whatever, but he's pretty awesome.

  • Peter Hammarstedt

  • You look at the camera way to much while driving. Don't kill yourself.

  • Um... Well I don't really think I'm out to gain respect from anyone. In fact I think part of the reason people want to be famous is that they want to feel like they mean something, and having people know who you are makes you feel like you mean something to the rest of the world. Even though to mean something you most definitely do not have to be famous. - A Thoughtful Nerdfighter

  • Firstly, they yeti has a cute voice.

Second, and I know this is gonna sound cliche, but I want God to respect me. But it's true! Out of all the people out there who would rather have respect you? Someone who honestly doesn't care if you live or die like Lindsay Lohan, or a personage of omnipotence who'll let you into paradise if you do all the things He tells you to do so He'll respect you.

  • Hayley Williams :]

  • I live there! He is 2 miles from my house! Why didn't he tell me!

  • It's funny, I just heard Warren Buffett make a very similar point. He's a pretty good silver back, btw.

  • You and Hank are my silverback gorillas. And the Katherine. I'd say the Yeti, but I've never even seen her so that doesn't quite work.

  • This video was extremly dangerous. Just saying.

  • Nice discussion, but maybe try decaf...

  • You scare me. Because I really like you and you keep looking at the camera instead of the road. And i don't want you to die. But you would live on in memory though...

  • People in japan pronounce it "Yoo-foh"

  • Mine are Jack Carawak and Jimmy Page.

  • You, Hank, Eugene Hutz.

  • my silverback gorilla is Alan Alda. Usually you'd expect crap like my mom od my dad but they aren't good people...not drug dealers but nontheless

  • Why silverback gorillas?

mine are JKR, my art & music teachers, and...probably Kristina Horner...

  • It's worse when the teachers say "That wasn't what I was thinking of." and then continues to say the exact same thing that you did only in different words that takes much longer to explain. I dislike my biology class.

  • Damn... you just made me realize that maybe I should stop loving, watching, and imitating the VlogBrothers so much.

  • my silverback gorillas include you, my grandpa, charlie brand (of Miniature Tigers), tim burton, my art teacher, and my mom and dad.

    :)

  • to be honest if william shakespeare is your silver backed gorilla that could be a problem, as he's dead and won't be around to respect you

  • Rosalind Franklin. Obscure but highly important x-ray crystallographer feminists FTW!

  • Please focus, Mr. Green.

  • And proud.

  • You guys are my silver backed gorilla. And also probrably some other people who I'm not going to mention because they aren't famous they are just people from my school who are older than me.

  • ok your old

  • I watch a lot of tv but I've never heard of any of these people or shows he's citing as examples. awesome.

also, John and Hank are famous and their life isn't ruined, so this whole thing is built on a faulty premise from the start.

  • keep your fucking eyes on the road sorry

  • ROBIN WILLIAMS IS MY SILVER BACK GORILLA with his hair growth its not that far for him

  • Uh- my ultimate silver back gorilla would probably be... Charlie Kaufman.

  • Oh and Zadie Smith.

  • Other than you and Hank, Ellen Degeneres is most definitely my silver-backed gorilla.

  • Jonathan Larson.

Past that, probably Winnie Holzman, Tony Kushner, Tennessee Williams, Meryl Streep, and Idina Menzel. Oh, and Jesse L. Martin and my mother. Yes, my mother is a silver-backed gorilla.

Please do not tell her I told you that.

  • my silverback gorilla is j.j. abrams :)

  • The Yeti's voice sounds like she's pretty. Damn it all! I wish I could see the Yeti!

  • My silverbacked gorilla is Jacob Gussert. <3

  • I asked my sister who her Silverback Gorilla is and she said Paris Hilton; which to me is the same as Lindsay Lohan....which explains a lot. :]

  • My silverback gorilla is me

  • u r crrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzed man im making you president of uberballoons

    you are my silver back

    and i worship you man

  • you are my silverback gorilla.

  • Every time Hank looks into the camera while driving, I get anxious because I think he's going to suddenly rear end a transport truck. And my silverback gorilla is probably my grade ten Music teacher.

  • My silverback gorilla is Thom Yorke.

That guy is just pure awesome.

  • Lauren Conrad is known, not famous.

My silverback gorilla would probably be Martin Scorsese (or, in a pinch, Quentin Tarantino). Alfred Hitchcock if he was still alive.

Or, in another respect, you, Maureen, Gregory McDonald, and Robert Parker.

Actually, there's more. Damon Lindlelof, Carlton Cuse, J.J. Abrams, Brian K. Vaughn, Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion...

  • My silverback gorilla is Jo Rowling.

  • Actually, if you want to be remembered after you die, would be to become a famous writer. Some examples would be Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe. Examples in the last century would be writers like J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Being a successful writer is the best way to be remembered after you die. Though admittedly you'd need to be insane to follow Edgar Allen Poe. But hey, insanity can be fun.

  • my silver backed gorilla is totally my english teacher! i ain't kidding. no question.

  • you'll like Japan's version, John! 8D

they use the word UFO and pronounce it 'yuu-foh' (the same as in the video, but with a long "u" sound). there's even a famous Japanese song by the name of UFO (and lots of other j-pop culture references to it).

speaking of Japan, my silver-back gorillas would be Japanese singers i admire. i don't have a desire to be famous or a singer/performer, but i would totally audition to join their agency so i could perform beside them one day.

  • who....is Hank? i thought Hank was the CD-ROM..hahahah wait...its a person? who is it? what is it?(sigh)

    am i hank??

    hahahahahahaha

  • Okay, so when you had your book signing in Columbus, I went. I then came home to Cinci and ended up seeing this video a bit later. I laughed because I was like "Cool coincidence!"

Well, I went shopping with my grandma yesterday, and she pointed it out. I realized that I recognized the front of the store. Then I realized that YOU had shot a video in front of it. I've just checked the video to be sure, and I'm absolutely positive because of the construction on the building next to it. How crazy.

  • While I can appreciate your enthusiasm for making a video. Doing it while driving makes me worried. For you, for the yetti, for your closet, and those around you. I'm not trying to be a giant squid of anger, just trying to get you to be a better silver back gorilla (because there are lots of people that look up to you). ;)

  • I want respect from you and Maureen Johnson. You're both doing what I want to do. You're just doing it better. LOL

  • the word ufo does exist!

    But only in Germany!

  • I don't know who mine is =[

    You're a fabulous speaker, John!

  • my silverback gorilla is amanda palmer. She's tough, creative, smart, and doesn't care about what people say about her.

  • Could you expand on why the show Lauren Conrad is on is 'destructive'?

    Just curious.

  • she is encouraging an unhealthy lifestyle of fame, partying, not working, being young and beautiful until it comes to a screeching halt. "The Hills" shows unquestionably stupid people making their own lives pointless and uneducated.

  • It destroys brain cells.

  • My silverback gorilla is Walter Koenig.

  • My silverback gorilla is nerfighteria. I have believed in it ever since I was 14, now I'm 27 and it exists in the world in a meaningful way and I'm stoked. I want to one day make such an incredible world-suck reduction device that the whole of nerdfighteria knows my deeds, but not my name. I want to inspire people, if I find out I inspired someone to do something more awesome than what I've done, I'm going to happy-dance unto innervation. But first, I gotta practice being awesome.

  • You.

  • My God, John! Keep your eyes on the road! Oh, and my silver-back gorilla is the person who writes jokes on popsicle sticks.

  • Oofoe sounds cool. Or however you spell that. We should make it happen. :P

  • oofoe would be spelled...ufo. Get it? UFO?

  • Markus Zusak <3 I loved The Book Thief! it was really sad at the end, but I loved it.

  • Rad post, Fame: nice, Road trip: nice, ape anology: good job. But did you run over and UFO @ segment 3:20 ?

  • Totally not being a teachers pet here, but my silver back gorilla is actually my High School English teacher that inspired me to be a writer. She was the first person to acknowledge I had a talent for writing and even though I moved from the state and don't know where she is or if she's even at the same school, she's still the person who I want respect from and the person I'll probably dedicate my first book to. Mostly, I want her to be proud.

  • No its not.

  • This is incredibly off topic... but there's bird poop on your window. LOL

  • I can see the landscape change as you talk. If I knew geography very well, and could deduce the speed at which you were driving, I could find the time span of your spectacular rant.

  • She's called the Yeti because she is never actually captured on film :)

  • Without a doubt my "silver back gorilla" is my best friend.

  • true enough. haha.

  • John Green is My silverback gorilla!

  • don quixote is my silver back
