The 1991-1997 BBC identity was timeless and classy. Seeing the idents in high quality has confirmed this. They would look great on screen now. The current package lacks the mystique and uniformity of these, which were held together by the viridian colour and bell leitmotif.
Of course, nowadays, the programming wouldn't live up to the idents. Thus we have Strictly Come Dancing and regional accents. Hooray.
So was this a solid glass 2 or the impression of a 2 cut into glass?
