  • My cat Gus, had to be put down of old age yesterday. He was 14. I got him for my 6th birthday, and shorty after went to see this production. This song always reminded me of him, and came on shuffle on my phone last night while I was showering. RIP Gus <3

  • This part made me cry 

  • I am sitting watching this video with my cat named Asparagus. We just call him Gus. He's been one of my best friends for 14 years so far.

  • not a dry eye in the house when this number is performed. i rescued a feral/wild cat and named him Asparagus. even says so on his name tag.

  • I cry everytime I see this part.

  • A very moving performance. RIP John Mills :'(

  • Blind. Can you believe Sir Jihn was blind from illness when filming, performing and singing in this? One of the best performances, ever.

  • @stembuk ...Sir John, that should read. Sorry about that.

  • this song pulls at my heartstrings :'( oh god i cant help but cry everytime. He deffinitely deserved to go to heavyside more then grizzabella.

  • ok . .. i dont know the story of gus (other than what they sang) but i feel like crying when i watch this . .. . but can someone tell what that black shadow thing??

  • - I recently played the part of Gus for the Ukiah Civic Light Opera - It is a wonderful part. The shadow you see in the background is a memory inn Gus' mind. It is Gus when he was young. He is viewing his past. In the performance I did, I ask the shadow to bow to me in the end, and then when I bowed he disappeared. it helps to explain his presence. that performance is also on youtube. Search "parsecsam" to find it.

  • @angeltheya12 - I played the part of Gus for the Ukiah Civic Light opera. It is a wonderful part. The shadow is only in his memory of his youth. My performance is also on Youtube; search "parsecsam" to get to it. I asked the shadow to bow to me at the end - when I returned the bow he disappears. It explains his actions.

  • <3 i love cats! <3

  • Who is it he see's?

  • @paramoreANDvampires He is seeing the ghost of his "grandest creation" that he sings about in the song

  • @paramoreANDvampires growl tiger the play he was tallking about

  • so sweet :D

  • Im seeing this when it comes to Charlotte, NC in a few weeks. I got my ticket

  • I love how after Jelly sings "pub" she looks over to him like "yeah, and i told you to stop doing that dad.."LOL

  • And where is my Growltiger?!?! They just ignored it in this version!!! GRRRR!!!

  • I still like Grizabella more than Gus. I'm sorry but thats just who i like.

  • He deserved it more than Girazabella.

  • I've seen Cats 3 times and I am planning to see it again, in Houston very soon.

    Awesome music <3

  • So,Asparagus is hard to pronounce but Deutromony isn't.And did I hear right.Jhon Mills DIED!!!!?????

  • @balletluve 6 years ago

  • @FrankFantasy Very sad. I think we can all agree. The theatre just isn't what it used to be.

  • When Lord Webber decided it was time to release Cats on video; Sir John Mills was the only one who could have brought forth such a heart wrenching performance. With his passing, I'm sure we can all agree; "Well the theatre it's certainly not what it was". He stands alone; sheer perfection.

  • Thumbs up if you agree that he should go to Heavyside next year.

  • this song always makes me cry, even more than memory does

  • :*(

  • I just saw this and cried softly because it it so touching.

  • That poor cat. He needs to be chosen next year. please :c

  • so emotional, especially if u know that got blind dureing the production

  • who is the cat with the red eyes?

some come everytime he sing about him

  • @ElizaChristina93 perhaps you mean the great Rumpus Cat? If so, look at the song, "The Pekes and the Pollicles." Hope it helps!

  • @ElizaChristina93 it's "Fireforefiddle, the fiend of the fell," a character gus played in his youth. when he was strong, and hansome, back in the glory days of the theatre, it was he's biggest achievment.

  • Why didnt Gus go to the Heaviside?

  • I'm jellylorum in cats too! This is gonna be soo awesome! -3

  • I get to be Jellylorum. Hope I can live up to this :)

  • jellylorum annoys me :') i love this song though<3

  • no one else thinks gus is rubbish compared to the recorded version?

  • @mojo882 i personally prefer this version, not saying the album one is bad, he's pretty good. But i love the emotion Sir john Mills puts into this performance! Its all the more amazing to remember that he was 90 and blind when performing this and even then he still sounds and acts the part fantastically. I just find this version more sad and emotional, the album version makes it rather comical in some parts.

  • As a musician one of my gigs is playing at the Orwell Hotel in Felixstowe Suffolk. I play the piano and keyboards - about a year before Sir John Mills died he visited with a number of his close friends and family and they asked me to play a selection from "Cats" which I did. I played his song - "Gus the theater cat" in the selection and sat at his table during my break. I spoke to hime briefly about his movies and his performance in "Cats" and it was wonderful. God rest ...

  • I'm playing Jellylorum in my high schools production of Cats. I can't wait to sing this song! :)

  • I'd let Gus walk the stairs, really.

  • @Aranthesa But he does NOT want that , He says it clearly :)

  • I get to sing this for musical theatre class :D (As Jellylorum) Any advise for a 12 year old actress?

  • @EiveeRocksTheWorld As long as you have fun youre doing it right

  • I'm so excited to do this show at my school next month. I play Jellylorum, and even though I'm an alto, I can still sing this song pretty great :D

Winnetonka High School's production of CATS, ftw! :D

  • Just rewatched the whole show on Ovation, and have also seen it live on stage, and although part of me regrets leaving out Growltigger, part of me also finds this song much more moving done straight thru in its entirety,,,,,If the reason it was left out was in fact Sir John's age then thats a fair trade to me,,,,this is the best part of the show

  • i looked at gus and said if he was a cat hed be ADORABLE!!!!!!

  • Okay. This really pisses me off. When Grizabella is there, they're all "EWW OLD PERSON!! GROSS! OLD PEOPLE ARE WIERD!!!" Then with Gus and Duteronomy they're all "YEAH! OLD PEOPL RULE!" and they love them and stuff! Its like, decide if you like old people or not already!!

  • @alligatorrPENS The cats don't hate Grizabella because she is old, they hate her because she left the group, or whatever.

  • @scooterxoxo ohh. Yeah i learned that. We're doing the play for this acting thing and it gave the whole background but they didn't really make it clear in the movie..

  • @alligatorrPENS i love grizabella:]

  • No one does jellylorum like sue tanner and NO ONE does gus like sir john mills. LOVE THIS

  • Clapping and sobbing.

  • catsの曲の中で一番好き!!

  • hahaha, my sister just said this after we watched Cats for the thousandth time:

"I'm Team Gus. I really wish he could've made it to the Heavy Side Layer ..."

    LoL! :D

  • nice

  • This is the one song I've ever heard that ALWAYS makes me cry. Sir John Mills does an incredible job with the emotion of Asparagus- the memory of his greatest creation always kills me! "These modern productions are all very well, but there's nothing to equal to what I here tell; that moment of mystery when I made history " is always when I burst into tears, especially due to the fact that he seems unable to finish that phrase.

  • He's sooooo cute as a cat!

  • It's always a pleasure to watch Sir John Mills in anything. For you younger ones, it's Hayley Mill's dad. Haley Mills played in the original Parent Trap and Pollyanna.

  • Vote this comment up if you cry when you saw this.

  • @MonkeySkull999

I can't cry... :( Would like to at this part, but I have too much fun singing along...

  • @MonkeySkull999 I cry every time I see this

  • @MonkeySkull999 yes it always makes me cry! it reminds me of a theatre teacher i had and he did have palsy and i loved the man.

  • How do ten fingers represent seven?

  • I love when he says "These kittens do not yet train, as we did, in the days when Victoria reigned."

    Brings passion into it.

That and that I am related to Queen Victoria, It's lovely to hear about ancestry in a song.

Sir. John Mills is eternal in my mind

  • @NobuyukiHiyama Why is queen victoria celebated more than you? You are an equal to her, and me. For all i know you are a deeper, more loving person than Queen Victoria. Would you help your child pack their bags to head off to Afghanistan to kill fellow humans, who are equal to me and you? The real human nature isnt killing and death, it is love. Love is real, there is no limit, it cant be controlled and is more powerfull than anything else we know. Ask the questions, don't stop thinking......

  • R.I.P

  • cats is my favorite musical

  • There is a moment in every performance that elevates it from good to great. For me, this was that defining moment in Cats. Sir John Mills was amazing. But, I do not think he was acting at all. I believe every word he sung was true of his own life. Rest in peace Mr. Mills. We will never forget you.

  • i'll be Asparagus in my school play, thank you very much, this video sure help me a lot for the performance >=)

  • a little too british for my taste!! But well done anyway!!

  • Sir John Mills' acting and singing even though he's 90 is amazing in this play.

  • OH MY GOD HE IS SOOOOO CUTE. I love him <3

  • this is so adorable, Sir John Mills was amazing

  • Sure sounds like In Ruby's Arms by Tom Waits

  • CAsting such a grand old actor as Sir John Mills in this part really adds something to the song......when he sings about the failings of modern "kitten" actors or talks about the actor he was in his prime it brings a depth that cant be matched...it lifts the show into another realm.....totally moving moment in a moving show....

  • is it weird that this songs makes me want to cry?

  • @koolkat104 No, it's not weird, it's beautiful. Own your emotions, they're what life is all about :).

  • @kismetprismatism AWWwww =') You are awesome!

  • Sir John Mills died in 2005.

  • Sir John Mills- Absolute Legend, he was what? 90 years old when he did this? yeah, cause he died 2005 aged 97.

    such a great actor.

  • Perfectly done

  • didn't john mills die shortly after this??

    sad init?? :(

  • Jellylorum is my favorite of the girl cats. I think she's great, and this song is good.

  • Aw. He's a cute old guy. He needs a hug. :(

  • awwhhh i wanna hug him

    its so sad :(

    and so cute

  • This song is so cute and sad.

  • Is it true that the actor was blind when he portrayed Gus?

  • @Ifileet

yes, it's true that he was blind

his sight was almost completely gone by 1992

  • What was his greatest creaiton? i cant understand it when they say it lol

  • Firefrorfiddle, the Fiend of the Fell

  • @mrshy36 thank you!

  • I actually thought it was Fire-flor-fiddle...

  • LOVE.

  • Great performance! I have in an old cassette the version with Sarah Brightman and Sir Jon Gielgud as Gus (he doesn't sing the lines, but the rendition is superb).

  • i just want to give gus a big hug. it's so sad

  • I love Cats. :) I think Gus has to be my favourite- this song is a bigger tearjerker for me than Grizabella.

  • @MrBristolian I agree...grizabella is overrated, i prefer gus and old deuteronomy....with this particular version given such added depth by Sir John

  • Ok like what is the gohst all about, and liek what is he sing about the gohst,,,??? Plz email me kk thanx,,, Iv been wondering sence I was 2 yrs old plz and thanx

  • th ghost is him acting when he was young, its not a ghost its his memory goin before him

  • is gus older, younger, or the same age as grizabella?

  • Older I Think

  • i saw cats for the first time today.....i know it was famouse....but i never expected it to be so great!!! this was my favorite song...it did bring tears to my eyes....cause in the end thats all we will have.....our memories

  • i am singiing thiss in my drama group . . i haave beeen told i am just like her :) the girly caaat . .

  • :'(

    *cries*

My old kitty was named 'sparagus, n he died last year.

  • @ryu8888

oh sorry to hear that. how old was your cat when he died?

  • the astounding age of 17 years, which is kitt-ancient... i loved mister gusgus

  • I lOvEz CaTz So MuCH lOl!!!!

  • Such a sad song; poor Gus. :(

Can someone please help; what accent is Jellylorum's?

  • It's a Yorkshire accent, but I couldn't tell you whereabouts in Yorkshire.

  • Ah, thanks. :)

  • Victorias sweet when she hears her name.I've never cried at this part but my eyes watered a bit this time

  • I love how Jellylorum gives a comforting smile while Gus is crying. I'm crying even as I watch this

  • its so sad. it always makes me cry i still love it though

  • i tear up everytime at the end when he has that little encounter w/ Fireforefiddle... This dude is amazing! It's such a sad part in this musical. All due respect to him *bows*

  • I totally agree with you he is amazing totally amazing

I cry everytime at this scene with fireforefiddle and when his voice at the end is cracking

  • I love this part more than anything. It's so very sad and really hits a soft spot for me. He almost reminds me of my great uncle

  • 0:37 hahahah jafuss

  • haha=P

  • k, i'm all watery eyed lol..

    he's so sad!

  • I tear up at the line "I'd a voice that would soften the hardest of hearts."

I also tear up the last time he sings "But there's nothing to equal..."

    So sad, so terribly sad.

  • what year did sir john mills die? and how did he die?

  • this part of the musical is so sad... that performance really strikes something inside, it's very emotional...

  • @tatoespinosa I agree, I saw Cats a long time ago when I was younger when Elaine Paige was in the cast. An awesome musical with an awesome story...

  • i love very song in cats but i have to say, this is my least favorite. it gets a little boring compared to the rest of the show. but i have to say this is an amazing performance...if ur goin to sing this song and play this part this is SO the way to do it!

  • truly amazing...he was a true actor

  • Ugh I love his voice so much. It doesnt matter that he didnt do the other song, It matters that he is great at acting

  • Wow - that black creature must be CG. Half-transparent... :-) Anyway else it's stage magic.

  • well i think the must hav used any editing program like vegas or adobve premiere, or it also could be an after effects....

  • Maybe it was Pepper's Ghost.

  • it's really too bad that Sir John Mills died:)

btw, if they picked a younger actor to play Gus, they would've done Growltiger. Sir John was just too old to do both parts.

  • Wow, excellent actor. I love CATS. Memory gives me shivers every time I see it. And so does Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats.

  • als ich noch kleiner war musste ich immer bei dem teil weinen.

    i-wie traurig

  • Gus reminds me of my Cat Jasmine. She was quite the kitty in her days..but now she is old, shakes, and used to be a out-kitty. Ahh this play makes me think of my family lol. I love this part and the "memory" part. I love em outta the whole play, these are my favs.

  • I'm so used to this song being so muchslower and with way less acting and alking, This version is so much more professional, but I just can't get used to it.

  • I wonder if they lip sync.

  • this makes me want respect old people big time

  • they are because they recorded all the songs before filming

  • awesome! i went to see this musical not 2 long ago but they were wearing different costumes the songs r lovley

    ★Tobi's A Good Boy ★

  • where??!! I thoughgt the play is no longer..

plz tell me cause I was scared when I was younger, but not anymore!!

  • I think the ghost is supposed to be Gus's most famous role that he played in the past. Maybe a memory of it?

  • I thought it was Fire Fro Fiddle, the Fiend of the Fair, or whatever he says.

  • btw: not trying 2 b rude, but its really Firo Fo Fiddle, Fiend of the Fell. And if ur going to ask me how i know this, i'm curently in the production of CATS and my friend plays Gus

  • umm, I'm currently playing Jellylorum, and it's Firefrofiddle.

  • No worries. I'm a journalism major, so I can appreciate a correction.

It's STILL my favorite part of the video :)

  • This, my friends, is proper acting.

    Hats off .. big respect.

  • dude, he was 90 when he did this... that's insane...

  • 90? That is amazing!

  • what's even more amazing is the fact that he was already blind by the time he did this.

  • highest amount of respect to him.

  • For real?! Man!... I don't think my Great-Grandma (she's 95) could even think about doing something like this....

  • This is my absolute FAVORITE part of this video.

  • What the fuck is that ghost thing ment to be dudes

  • It's supposed to be Macavity spying, I believe.

  • That would have to be Asparagus's grandest creation "Firefrofidel The Fiend of the Fel" manifesting itself as he recalls the days of his lost youth. Notice how it only appears when he sings about it and at the end it seems that it calls for him...

  • He's best Gus ever. He is of actual age.

  • omg! gus is awesome it's like your getting acting advise for a few moments and it's so cute

  • That's what Michael Gruber said. It was like a lesson in acting.

  • omg this is so sad i might cry like now :'(

  • He still had his gorgeous voice

  • omg...i'm crying this is so moving

  • I wish that they had followed this up with Growltiger's last stand. Even if they don't peform it live anymore, I would have been great to have a brillently done record of it

  • i know! i was so disappointed that they didn't include it. when i saw it at JPJ arena, they did have Growltiger and i remember it was one of my favorite parts!

  • Why couldn't they have had Tony Timberlake (young Asparagus) do Growltiger?

  • He is so sweet :D

  • yeah its just dont get about the red eyes

  • it is so hard not to cry ...it touches me :'(

  • I almost dried when I saw that for the frist time... very moving song...

  • I just got cast as Jellylorum today and I'm stoked! I LOVE this song :D
