That is true, they sang about viking mythology (Hammerheart was a landmark album), so people termed it "viking metal".

It used to be relatively "easy" to categorise a band, but that is difficult these days, as people pick'n mix between genres and sounds, crossing back and forth, etc. One might as well expand on the "original" genres (this technically being (melodic) death metal with a viking theme), and just call it viking metal :)
