the American woman doesn't seems very aware of the meaning of "latin/latino", or "hispanic/hispano". The way these words are used in the USA is completly misleading. These words refer to cultures that relate to the romance-speaking European cultures (latin: Italy, Spain, Portugal, France) or to just Spanish-speaking countries (hispanic). In the USA those terms have taken a racial conotation and are used as synonyms of "mestizo", just because most spanish-speaking imigrants were mestizos.

Many of the Mayas who come over speak Mayan languages as a primary language. SO they are not Latinos or Hispanics. They are still indigenous as a primary culture. But that does not mean most Indigenous Latinos are not Latino/Hispanic. After slavery, some blacks chose their own last name, likely english, because they liked the name. Many black people do have english ancestory and that can be tied into their last name as well. We have spanish slave names as a result of slavery. During the 1500's and 1600's the kings of spain passed laws that gave rights to slave owners in "new spain" to name their slaves. Slave owners who's names were gonzalo, martin, jimeno.. etc named their slaves gonzalez, martinez, jimenez... etc to signify that those slaves were their property.
Black people too have european slave names... jackson, johnson, williams... etc but they dont associate with their slave owners, so why is it that we do?

the American woman doesn't seems very aware of the meaning of "latin/latino", or "hispanic/hispano". The way these words are used in the USA is completly misleading. These words refer to cultures that relate to the romance-speaking European cultures (latin: Italy, Spain, Portugal, France) or to just Spanish-speaking countries (hispanic). In the USA those terms have taken a racial conotation and are used as synonyms of "mestizo", just because most spanish-speaking imigrants were mestizos.

I can hardly speak Spanish. I find it really annoying, and disrespectful, to call Indigenous people Latino/Hispanic. Many of the Mayas who come over speak Mayan languages as a primary language. SO they are not Latinos or Hispanics. They are still indigenous as a primary culture. But that does not mean most Indigenous Latinos are not Latino/Hispanic. Just because Peruanista may have a Spanish last name, does not mean he is of Hispanic descent. The Spaniards gave Amerindians Spanish last names during colonization in order to "Hispanicize" them and modify the culture. Even if some Amerindians have some Latin ancestry, that does not make them "mestizo", just like Whoopi Goldberg, Don Cheadle, Chris Rock, and Wesley Snipes are not biracial simply because they have some European ancestry.

After slavery, some blacks chose their own last name, likely english, because they liked the name. Many black people do have english ancestory and that can be tied into their last name as well. We have spanish slave names as a result of slavery. During the 1500's and 1600's the kings of spain passed laws that gave rights to slave owners in "new spain" to name their slaves. Slave owners who's names were gonzalo, martin, jimeno.. etc named their slaves gonzalez, martinez, jimenez... etc to signify that those slaves were their property.

Science is a process, a form of epistemic understanding. I personally have no problem with science as a method of testing natural phenomena. As a P'urhepecha I understand my own people's traditional way of defining identity and ancestry. What I have read in these comments are paradigms of identity and race that are not inherent or crucial to any particular cultural/ethnic groups' paradigm, but rather demonstrative of "western" notions of identity and ancestry.

The other 2% is the Genetic Marker X that can be found in Asia AND Europe. HOWEVER this genetic marker is too old so they had to break it down!
