  • Just found your vid. SWMBO got me a starter kit for my 40th as I keep wanting to get into brewing my own. Only done kits so far but as funds allow will build to all grain. There are so many US based vids about homebewing on Youtube it's hard to find any showing what's readily available in the UK (electric boilers specifically) so this is REALLY useful to me as a reference. Cheers!

    I am not, but I have browsed the forum there a few times.

    Taking a bit of a brewing sabbatical atm, though I have planted a hop vine in my garden last month (First Gold) and the shoots have popped out the ground now! Hope to have my own home-grown supply of hops by the end of next summer!

  • I am curious. What did you use to clean off the verdigris that forms on your Wort Chiller? I know an oxidized copper wort chiller can add unwanted nastiness to your wort if its not cleaned.

The stuck sparge and the mess on the floor had me giggling..the broken thermometer was familiar, and the weather altering your lager temp is typical..   • hi i have only ever done beer kits rather than all grain and i found your video interesting and really informative and it has got me thinking about giving this a go. have you brewed kits before and if you have how do they compare to all grain?

    sorry for not responding sooner. I have brewed a couple of kits but it was so long ago it would be unfair for me to compare (and I never tried to newer higher quality kits).

  • In the 21st century there're these things called shops, which sell beer ready-made. The beer comes in glass bottles and metal cans and is reasonably priced in this day and age. The only equipment required by yourself is a large glass and a bottle opener....

  • @houghhill actually it is as microbrewing is pretty damn fun plus you can contrl the quality to a level they couldnt imagine at a bigger factory

  • @AnarchisticAttitude I was actually just poking fun. I'm pretty fussy with beer and buy the more expensive bottled types, and I don't imagine I could get it right myself so I'm not inclined to try it out. Each to their own I suppose.

  • 'sparging' sounds like it involves big hairy pub blokes with intense staring eyes, using their guts to wrestle each other away from the precious beer..im guessing most people think that when they hear the word for the first time?

    gonna give home brewing a try soon, must be great to enjoy your own beer.

    Personally i went straight from a kit to full mash. Mashing is simpler than I maybe made it sound, you can get decent results as long as the temperature is in the right range (i was overloading my equipment here, if you use less grain then you can add hot or cold water to adjust). You can also make a very simple mash tun with two simple cylindrical fermenting bins (the stackable ones) - you simply drill dozens of holes inside one bin then stand it in the other which needs a...

    ...tap on the bottom and then lag everything with hot water tank lagging. i used this arrangement for years.

    As to water hardness. Yes, pale ales require hard water and milds and stouts soft water. However, the hardness needs to come from magnesium and calcium sulphate, not calcium carbonate which we get a lot of here and drops out as limescale when you boil the water.

    I think a basic polyprop boiler is about £40 and you can make a msh tun stacking two fermenting bins (the outer one with a tap the inner one with holes drilled in the bottom) and insulating them). Other than that some bits of tubing, thermometers and a hydrometer, a fermenting bin (you can use the outer one of your mash tun if you make the one as above) and then a keg (the stainless ones are pricey btw). Maybe about £80-100 - for double that you can have a much better...

    It takes about five or six hours on a brew day (though you have two 90 min periods where you can do something else), then maybe a week to ferment then a month to come into condition.

    My all time favourite beer was Youngers No3. Now long gone I believe :(

    The problem is, unless you drink 20 pints a day CO2 is the only way you will keep your beer fresh over the time it takes you to drink it. It is the same reqason I don't use a beer engine, it holds half a pint in the pump assembly and I'd effectively need to waste half a pint every day - fine in a pub where the beer is flowing but in a home situation where you have a pint a day it is a hell of a waste!

  • I put the StarSan in a spray bottle when I make wine. It makes it very easy to spray everything down. And it makes it very easy to sterilize tubing. I just spray into the tubing and rinse it when I'm ready for it.

    Give it a go S4M, it is actually a fairly forgiving process, as long as the water temp is in the right range you will get a result

  • Have you ever tried alternative hops? Seems to have worked pretty well on a couple of my experimental batches. I tried wormwood a bout 4 months back and put it through a bloody long slow brewing process. Racked it off and filtered it for the last time yestarday and it smells bloody awsome, a month to tasteing yet though, the real moment of truth.

    It came out ok but a change in weather messed things up a bit and made it impossible to keep the lager down at the correct kinds of maturation temperatures: I was left with a tasty brew but not really true to type.

  • h8uall66 All-grain. Bravo! I was worried that you were going to show us a malt extract demonstration. Malt extract brewing is basically slightly more complicated tea brewing, in my opinion. I'm constructing a single-tier automated system right now in my garage. This will be the second one I've built. I sold the first one after I got out of the Marines because I had no where to put it. I'll film the construction process and the first batch.

    I will look forward to it. I have seen the rigs some of you Americans have, you seem to be able to get access to such a range of bits of equipment and so cheaply!!! I'd love to have a full series of racking with in-situ stainless gear but I can't really justify the cost.

  • Good point on sterilization. I've seen people that sterilize anything that comes in contact with any ingredient of the wort, no matter what part of the process. Personally, I only sterilize my fermenters and air-locks, and any equipment I use to transfer cooled liquid from one vessel to another. The boil will kill anything! And of course my bottles and kegs.

    Yes, it is. Was a pretty meaningless facility before but with the interface changes it seems to be the only way to go beyond just having your bare name there.

  • Wow. How long to you have to maintain the 63 degrees? It seems like such a narrow temperature range, and once you start adding things, you're going to alter the temperature. I've never seen it done via the actual process of malting. I used to just buy cans of malt extract. Tasty stuff. Been a long time since I've tried brewing beer. Didnt' use hops though. Thanks for sharing this. Not boring. ;)

    The cans of malt extract are usually pre-hopped though you can by it unhopped and then add your own (therefore just doing the boil stage and not the mash).

    The temp is easy to maintain, the hard point is hitting it right, especially when your mash tun is so full (i need to buy and convert a slightly bigger cool box) because you have to estimate the temp drop in the water and dont have much room to add more water for corrections.

  • @noelplum99 Well, thanks very much, Jim. It was quite a pleasure observing the various ways you've jury-rigged everything to the point of functionality. I ran into problems when I did my brewing, but it may have to do with sanitizing; didn't know much about the chemicals to use. My parents used to make rhubarb wine. Hard work, but delightful results. Must be 40 years since I've had some rhubarb wine. (tearful reminiscence) Great presentation.

  • I have a cousin of a friend that brews alot of beer and enters contests with it. I've drank some of it, and it's not bad. After watching your video though, it seems a bit tedious and a bit complicated. You did a good job explaining the whole process by the way, noelplum. I'm afraid my past dealt more with planting, raising, and picking plants. You know, the kind of plants that one enjoys smoking at parties.

    It is a lot of work if you don't enjoy doing it, certainly. I upgraded to the large white bins used here because it allowed me to double the size of my brews. I get about 70 pints from a brew now (I could get more if I brewed weaker beers) so the effort p[er pint is not too bad and I quite enjoy a brew day every so often.

  • My dad taught me how to brew beer when I turned 18. We both thought the law about having to be 21 to buy beer ridiculous. One of my favorite concoctions is blackberry mead. It's just water, crushed & strained blackberry juice, honey and yeast. It's simple and it's good.
