@Bradshawbeats You must not be in NY cuz these brothas & sistas still get down & have taught all over the world. Many of the 90's Hip Hop dance videos were done in NY & most of them were in them as well as Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson (remember the time),CeCe Peniston, Crystal Waters
@doc362 yeah i wish i was from new york city , i just love that place, awesome vibe each time i go, though i have yet to find a "house club " there..maybe next time , in Toronto( where i'm from) we have so many..and meet so many great dancers and cool people, crystal waters...oh man she had some tracks back in the day!
Interesting. What the girl called "the California" at 2:55 we used to call "The Guess" at my high school in '87-'88, named after Guess Jeans. Great vid, thanks for sharing. Westside Cali up in here.
When I watch the new house dancing videos on Youtube, I count the footwork. And I got to say is I'm not impress. I've dance since 90-98 Stop; came back in 01-04 then stop. Now Jack is calling me and got a groove. I just don't like the fact that most of the new school House heads foot work looks the same. The originators of the foot work is "Ejoe, Cale, Cricket" the true school house head' Remember House is not about battling or who's better, it's about letting the music take control of your soul.
@stephany9084 Original House Dancers? Where is their work? & can they still get down? Cuz many of the ones in these clips still get biz & have been teaching worldwide.
@moshhon These dancers are decedents of the Hoofers & Lindy Hoppers, raised on the SAME SOIL, NYC/US....UK JAZZ DANCERS got there dance from the same people...that being said...the influence is from their elders not UK...remember there was no youtube back then....
umm wrong!!! all these move are all from NEW JERSEY! all the lames asses in nyc would just bite our moves our style..we got the records 1st the studios were in jerz!
after CHICAGO ..jerzee was it..
these steps came in because of the huge influx of SKINHEADS INTO THE HOUSE SCENE!!! ALL THESE MOVES ARE NORTHER SOUL STEPS EXAGGERATED!
LOOK UP ANY NORTHERN SOUL VID ON HERE!
WHERE THE FUCK WERE HOOD RATS IN NYC GONNA LEARN ABOUT DOC MARTINS AND FLIGHT JACKETS! AND THOSE STEPS! FROM WHERE!?
@TheAUDIOARCADE How you gonna spat that BS on this board talkn BS that NY bit Jersey moves. NY house dance stems from Loftn which started in David Mancuso Loft parties in NY. Jersey didn't even have a house scene til 79 when Miles Berger and Tony Humphries from BROOKLYN came out to Jersey and played at Zanziba which was patterned after the Paridise Garage. The dance seen above were all hip hip freestyle dances merged with loftn. All that shit YALL got from NY! Don't eva get it fukd up again!
@TheAUDIOARCADE i see a heavy jazz dance (20's - 50's) influence on both northern soul and house. jazz dance which was developed in nyc (harlem at the savoy to be exact)... i think it's most likely that "house dance" style is derived from the jazz dance style (same geographical area - before internet as well) than the derivative northern soul style. the reason why they may look superficially similar is because they share the same root.
not sure about the logic of skinheads either, i mean a lot of us "hood rats" were rocking polo as well, did that mean there was a large influx of preppie white boys in the house scene (or even less likely the hip hop scene in the late 80's early 90's)??? I think a better explanation is that NYC is a melting pot, cultures get squished together randomly and never have to socialize for concepts to be appropriated across cultures, especially back in the pre-internet days... my 2 cents
for more footage of nyc clubbies from 1991 search "club mtv." also search "new dance show" from detroit to see classic 80s/90s club dances. is there a chi dance show from that era? could only find chi disco from 78.
Visit DJAMAYA [.](com) and visit his Podcast shows Hitsuzen Radio show check out Episode 47 I think it is. I call it Disco never dies.. I love that. Plus he has free mp3 Remixes of his available for download. His YouTube channel is DJAMAYAOFFICIAL love love love him and so do many now. @BUDDHASTRETCH68 well what you guys call house dancing probly did however there is no systematic way of doing it it is more of a feeling and honestly if you never been to or experienced a REAL CHICAGO HOUSE MUSIC PARTY you would never get it .you would actually have to see it by being at a party to see the difference. it's no offense to New Yorkers or anyone else thats just the way it is some of the moves in the vid are simliar but not all of the moves
btw if you want to hear real housemusic sounds liketo get the true vibe of how to dance to it type in Ron Hardy, dj Pharris Thomas,Frankie Knuckles,Farley Jackmaster Funk, djAndre Hatchett, also check out lenoiz page, for the REAL HISTORY check out the Father whom came up with the term lrmx1
@houseofjrk But you talkin about two different scenes. You cant say the cats in the video dont know how to feel house just cause they havent been to the scene in chicago.. Dancers from different places feel music differently. That goes with all genres of music. Especially back in the 80's and 90's thats when folks from all over were feelin music and movin in their own way.
pardon me i mean video clash by lil louis however mike dunn did help on one of them they both came out around the same time lil louis version has more bass
Part 2. The dances above are house steps with hip hop moves mildly inserted in. That definately started in NY. Chicago peeps don't dance like that. Chicago house dance stems from Jackin moves where you somewhat pump your body to the track. NY dance stems from Loftin style. That Runnin man $h!t homeboy mention earlier had absolutely nothin to do with house dance. And as stated earlier you would get laughed off the floor in NY with that BS!!! Do you see any of the cats above doing the runnin man?
Part 1. House music did in fact start in chicago. However, house music evolved from disco, soul and loft music and all of that started in NY(except 4 the Europe speeded up re-edits). Record lables like West End, Sal Soul and Prelude were NY based lables. And Frankie Knuckles from the South Bronx brought those sounds to Chicago. Before House, we were calling it Club music, underground music and now we call it dance music since the music played isn't strictly just house.
I COMPLETELY know where you're coming from dude. Before, I used to go to Hip-Hop, Rock, & Gino Italian clubs with pretentious peeps. But the EDM scene found me...you don't find it --- ever. If you're chosen to discover the scene, your life will NEVER be the same. :-)

This is a short version/trailer of a documentary directed by Diane Martel. Rest of it will be in the book. LOL!!!
this is to sonboogie.. its not misleading.. this is talking about house dance in ny really.. not about chi town where the house music seen was created and as i know jacking started as a sexual thing in chi town.. it was a dance like what they are doing now.. if you dont believe find the dvd called the usual suspect.. it will tell you the history of house in chi town and how it traveled from there to ny and other places... .
Title is totally misleading. How in the hell are you going to talk about the history of House dancing without one mention of Chicago jackin'? I'm through with this...
any househead will give thanx to chicago, for the inception of the music...it goes without saying. it shoulndnt get you angry..no matter where you are from or what you think of house...it should just make you feel good. (house is a feeling..not a location)
cab any body tell me where can i finde that doc. "It's a national treasure of the dinasty of hip hop dancers around the world". woooooooooord. thank's
I can appreciate you trying to be part of this discussion, but this discussion was for people that were going to clubs in 1989 not people that were BORN in 1989. Sorry.
PART 1: House music and House dancing started in Chicago PERIOD. It continued on to New York and Europe. The true dancing was taking place in the 18 ond older clubs/house parties because the kids weren't old enough to get into clubs that served alchohol. Like all music and dance its driven by the "younger" generation the 16-20 age.
i agree, i'm from the Chi. when i first got turned on to "House" i was 17 and i am 46 now. none of the people in that documentary look like their my age unless the videomentary is really old. I just missed Frankie Knuckles infamous "Warehouse" only heard the tales of its heyday. Jacked my body hard with Ron Hardy at the MuzicBox and occasionally with Frankie Knuckles @ the PowerPlant. Always assumed the "house" was coined from the original Warehouse.
PART 2: House dancing had its heyday right after break dancing faded in the mid 80's. The golden age of house was mid to late 80's peaking at the very end of the decade. House dancing was "move" based. You did the moves and they had names names, the running man, the track, roger rabbit, the robocop, the tom & jerry, the air jordan, the mop & glo, the Mike Tyson.
PART 3: By 90-91 the hip hop/new jack/flexing style had taken hold and by 92-93 Breaking had made it's return. The mid 90's rave dancing evolved into the step dancing that people like to call "house" dancing today, which is a completely incorrect term. The "house" dancing today is basically one step with 2-3 variations of the same step with a little flexing/popping thrown in. The euro DnB is the same thing one step with a couple variations.
the running man, roger rAbbit are you kidding me??if anybody in nyc did these silly mainstream dances they would have been laughed off the dancefloor.Dave mancusos "The Loft" dancers started the whole basis of todays "house dancing" like it or not NY influenced the whole world when it comes to street dancing and that includes breaking and lofting.
Thanks for this...It is so friggin' awesome! I love this style of dancing but NEVER thought to get the history of it. It makes so much more sense now considering its roots. Thanks! 5-stars
House Music origins came from Chicago then New Jersey adopted the music and New York ran with it in the 80"s
Shelter on Hubert St , Sound factory , Octagon , Red Zone , The World , Zanzibar , Paradise Garage , The Tunnell and Nells these were some of the hottest Underground house spots in the 80's
Now everybody knows the HOUSE MUSIC started in Chicago. We know Frankie was coming from NewYork, but they called it club music. It actually got it's name from a club called the WAREHOUSE. They played alot of disco and euro music. and that was the only place to hear that music. while dancing we would surround a girl with 4 guys and jack her(house her) those were the days!
honestly i dont know who started house music. honestly i think it was here since the begining of time if you ask me.first it started by the clap and the dance then the drum was invented ect.ect.
Back in the 90's whenever you went to a club or house party there would always be a circle and a battle goin on !!!!! Shouts to all my "CASA HEADS"!!!!!
I don't think they think that, But are just trying to re-live something that has already happened, which will never happen. The bay already has its OWN FLAVE AND HISTORY, they are just not tapping into it and are being lazy to try to elevate the art....Thas in my eyes at least.
Hmm... Maybe a few apples not all. And the art is there.... you just need to look hard to find the artists, ones that create, not emulate. I found some and we party hard and love like it was the last day
house music back in the day was brought up by the gays bopping in the clubs.. .. .. then in 1990s ppl made it their own.. and it was cool to chill wit gays back then just as much as it is now.. lmao.. no offense to any gay ppl out there..
it brings back mad memories. Peter Paul and Ari used to go Morgan State University in Baltimore and we used to dance at Club Fantasy here in Bmore. However, I am still getting ill wit it. check out the video Fresh on my page, my man Buddah Monk shows our stye here in Bmore. much love. Lab aka Omar
i too went to the red zone as well as the funhouse.check 4:30 this is the kick dancing moves the italian kids were doing at the funhouse in early 80s.look up "new york dance tracks at the funhouse"and check out the kid dancing to disco circus.
cont.)francois k and david mancusos loft were the start of house and house dancing aka "lofting" all the so call "house dancing" is nothing more than what was started at the loft, garage, funhouse etc.recognize the real.
Lofting is lofting, house is house. House was born in Chicago. Every music has an origin so it's safe to say that House was influenced by NY dance music and disco, but it is it's own uniquely distinct style of music.
My first remark was cut short, but anyway, the crack "ecstasy garage" was un-called for, I DON'T KNOW ABOUT HIM, but you didn't need drugs to groove to Larry's music!! Secondly, nyc dance nusic has nothing to do with chi-town house nusic, i've been listening/dancing to nyc underground since 81' and no house in nyc then-didn't need it. There are "house heads" who think "Go Bang" is house music..lastly, these kids don't know shit,no one did "house" in the Garage, u just danced!
AMEN to that! I'm glad i experienced what these people are trying to describe when it was in its infancy and still pure. I don't ever remember my friends (in Canarsie) ever talking about "housing" anything...it was let's go hear "Larry" play and dance tonight. The sad part is the disrespect of the young man's comment - without the [Garage], house music would stayed in Chicago (don't think Studio 54could have done it). This is what u get when something goes mainstream.
luckyly not everybody thinks the same! i was too young to be aware of that scene (still wearin diaper!hahaha), moreover in my country i don't think we ever had it. but i'm the first paying respect to Larry Levan cause if it wasn't for him i would never tried to look for some house music and now i consider myself a house lover!
Anyway i have a question about the guy who appears right after Marjory doin the snake, beggins to talk at 1:38. is he Dimitry from Dee - Lite?
sorry to dissapoint all who think house was made in chicago.thats the worlds greatest fallacy.house was a natural progression of club music being played in NYC with Philly also playing a part.when frankie knuckles moved back to chicago he brougth along all the recorsd that were being played at the garage.you have to remenber also that besides larry levan ,jellybean benitez,t scott, franc
Jesse Saunders was making House music while Frankie was still playing Bostich at the Warehouse. While Frankie was critical to the formation of the Chicago house sound, he did not bring house to Chicago. He brought something that was morphed into house, but isn't that true of all music? It's like saying that Sly Stone began Funk. He influenced it, but he didn't start it.
that is not house dancing.....im sorry ..they doin the running man ..WE, didnt do those sorts of dancing ...we were still kinda dancing like soul traim dancerz....more leg kicking...totally diff i need to put up a video of how chicagianz do it chi -city style
house! came from disco breaks! back when america banned disco... it went underground into a warehouse in chicago and for short ppl called it the house!and so on...
house! came from disco breaks! back when america banned disco... it went underground into a warehouse in chicago and for short ppl called it the house!and so on...
Sick documentary - never saw this one. Peace to Mop Tops and Wise Guys, Ejoe, Peter Paul, Stretch, big Leaf and Ramir etc... Those were the days - lets bring'em back! The World, Mars, Dining n Dashing in the Vill (Well maybe not bring that back) LOL!
this was my era. damn, i miss these days. i still dance that style, i don't even pay attention to these other dances right now. big up mp top, wise guys, misfits and all the other TRUE dancers from that time.

Title is totally misleading. How in the hell are you going to talk about the history of House dancing without one mention of Chicago jackin'? I'm through with this...
sonboogie 2 years ago
any househead will give thanx to chicago, for the inception of the music...it goes without saying. it shoulndnt get you angry..no matter where you are from or what you think of house...it should just make you feel good. (house is a feeling..not a location)

I can appreciate you trying to be part of this discussion, but this discussion was for people that were going to clubs in 1989 not people that were BORN in 1989. Sorry.
charwars 3 years ago
PART 1: House music and House dancing started in Chicago PERIOD. It continued on to New York and Europe. The true dancing was taking place in the 18 ond older clubs/house parties because the kids weren't old enough to get into clubs that served alchohol. Like all music and dance its driven by the "younger" generation the 16-20 age.
charwars 3 years ago
i agree, i'm from the Chi. when i first got turned on to "House" i was 17 and i am 46 now. none of the people in that documentary look like their my age unless the videomentary is really old. I just missed Frankie Knuckles infamous "Warehouse" only heard the tales of its heyday. Jacked my body hard with Ron Hardy at the MuzicBox and occasionally with Frankie Knuckles @ the PowerPlant. Always assumed the "house" was coined from the original Warehouse.
naluv4u2 2 years ago
PART 2: House dancing had its heyday right after break dancing faded in the mid 80's. The golden age of house was mid to late 80's peaking at the very end of the decade. House dancing was "move" based. You did the moves and they had names names, the running man, the track, roger rabbit, the robocop, the tom & jerry, the air jordan, the mop & glo, the Mike Tyson.
charwars 3 years ago
PART 3: By 90-91 the hip hop/new jack/flexing style had taken hold and by 92-93 Breaking had made it's return. The mid 90's rave dancing evolved into the step dancing that people like to call "house" dancing today, which is a completely incorrect term. The "house" dancing today is basically one step with 2-3 variations of the same step with a little flexing/popping thrown in. The euro DnB is the same thing one step with a couple variations.
charwars 3 years ago
the running man, roger rAbbit are you kidding me??if anybody in nyc did these silly mainstream dances they would have been laughed off the dancefloor.Dave mancusos "The Loft" dancers started the whole basis of todays "house dancing" like it or not NY influenced the whole world when it comes to street dancing and that includes breaking and lofting.

DrakeBake 3 years ago
honestly i dont know who started house music. honestly i think it was here since the begining of time if you ask me.first it started by the clap and the dance then the drum was invented ect.ect.
nsfjigb 2 years ago
you're are right. House is a melting pot of all cultures...all the elements existed before the term HOUSE...in my opinion.

More San Francisco kids need to see this video cuz for some strange reason, they think they invented this style of dance. School these west coasters!
dcboy555 3 years ago
I don't think they think that, But are just trying to re-live something that has already happened, which will never happen. The bay already has its OWN FLAVE AND HISTORY, they are just not tapping into it and are being lazy to try to elevate the art....Thas in my eyes at least.
gaSOULean 3 years ago
Hmm... Maybe a few apples not all. And the art is there.... you just need to look hard to find the artists, ones that create, not emulate. I found some and we party hard and love like it was the last day

infg3570 3 years ago
cont.)francois k and david mancusos loft were the start of house and house dancing aka "lofting" all the so call "house dancing" is nothing more than what was started at the loft, garage, funhouse etc.recognize the real.
dosx78 3 years ago
Lofting is lofting, house is house. House was born in Chicago. Every music has an origin so it's safe to say that House was influenced by NY dance music and disco, but it is it's own uniquely distinct style of music.
Moor4u 3 years ago
My first remark was cut short, but anyway, the crack "ecstasy garage" was un-called for, I DON'T KNOW ABOUT HIM, but you didn't need drugs to groove to Larry's music!! Secondly, nyc dance nusic has nothing to do with chi-town house nusic, i've been listening/dancing to nyc underground since 81' and no house in nyc then-didn't need it. There are "house heads" who think "Go Bang" is house music..lastly, these kids don't know shit,no one did "house" in the Garage, u just danced!
faft1981 3 years ago 2
You see these are children I don't think they even know about The Great Larry Levan may he rest in peace.
crgebee 3 years ago
AMEN to that! I'm glad i experienced what these people are trying to describe when it was in its infancy and still pure. I don't ever remember my friends (in Canarsie) ever talking about "housing" anything...it was let's go hear "Larry" play and dance tonight. The sad part is the disrespect of the young man's comment - without the [Garage], house music would stayed in Chicago (don't think Studio 54could have done it). This is what u get when something goes mainstream.
faft1981 3 years ago
luckyly not everybody thinks the same! i was too young to be aware of that scene (still wearin diaper!hahaha), moreover in my country i don't think we ever had it. but i'm the first paying respect to Larry Levan cause if it wasn't for him i would never tried to look for some house music and now i consider myself a house lover!
Anyway i have a question about the guy who appears right after Marjory doin the snake, beggins to talk at 1:38. is he Dimitry from Dee - Lite?
wever 3 years ago
sorry to dissapoint all who think house was made in chicago.thats the worlds greatest fallacy.house was a natural progression of club music being played in NYC with Philly also playing a part.when frankie knuckles moved back to chicago he brougth along all the recorsd that were being played at the garage.you have to remenber also that besides larry levan ,jellybean benitez,t scott, franc
dosx78 3 years ago
Jesse Saunders was making House music while Frankie was still playing Bostich at the Warehouse. While Frankie was critical to the formation of the Chicago house sound, he did not bring house to Chicago. He brought something that was morphed into house, but isn't that true of all music? It's like saying that Sly Stone began Funk. He influenced it, but he didn't start it.
Moor4u 3 years ago
I agree 100%, first and foremost, the kids crack ecstacy
faft1981 3 years ago
that is not house dancing.....im sorry ..they doin the running man ..WE, didnt do those sorts of dancing ...we were still kinda dancing like soul traim dancerz....more leg kicking...totally diff i need to put up a video of how chicagianz do it chi -city style
sagittarius247 3 years ago
this doc is very 1991/NYC. That was when house was blowing up on a national level. on the pop charts and etc.
the real roots of house are like 80-85 in Chicago. where disco never died.
