The Dictators were ahead of their time by 1.5 years. Then the Ramone came along when punk started to generate a larger underground and the Ramones brought it out.
The Dictators are by FAR the best punk band musically, they actually know how to play their instruments and their sense of humor and in your face lyrics made you listen to what they were singing. It's unfortunate they didn't get the fame, but if they did perhaps their albums would have been different, softer due to the record companies
in any case the sex pistols were most defientely NOT a fake band in any way shape or form. and people saying they were created to promote mclarens clothing store ?? you ppl are beyond stupid. the ambitions behidn the sex pistols were waaay bigger than THAT are kidding ? lmao they were created to make hit records, millions of dollars and change rock n' roll that was always the plan not sell fucking t-shirts
From "Go Girl Crazy", this song is a toss-up w/ "Two Tub Man" as far as my favorite. In a way, it's similar to the NY Dolls' "Stranded In The Jungle" because it's part campy and part straight-forward ROCK! This band definitely slipped through the cracks; shoulda' been fully recognized rock stars. Damn American DJ's!!
Funny lyrics, two killer guitar solos and it looks like I'm gonna get this album. I'm finally listening to these guys for the first time after hearing of them for the better part of 30 years. They are way better than I expected them to be and give the New York Dolls a serious run for their money.
stooges? they were trying to be a heavy/early heavy metal band just like every other cool band in the world during 1969-1971. IT was the "punk rock" of 70,71,72, worldwide. just check any 1970 BLACK SABBATH PARIS show clip. i was there, it was >>>> any dopey UK punk 1977 band for balls out fuck-you power.
there was no music like the Ramones on the planet until them/1975. (and the Saints simultaneously down in austrailia, asdocumented on tape). the ramones REINVENTED music,@guitar rock
@mikeinoakland there's a huge difference between heavy metal and punk rock, not just stylistically but attitude-wise. To hear the difference, listen to say, Fun House by the Stooges next to other albums released at the same time: Led Zep III, Deep Purple in Rock, Black Sabbath's 1st 2 albs. The sheer nihilism of the Stooges is what makes the difference; no mystical, hippy bullshit at all.
Before debating who started punk rock, read "Please Kill Me". If we're going to tell the truth VU started the whole thing. If your standard is when the genre got a name, The Stooges are the 1st. The Sex Pistols were posers ... so is anyone influenced by them. Sorry.
rocket from the tombs was around before the dead boys and wrote half the songs dead boys used in there set so your dead wrong hahahahahahaha who really cares right
dictators way cool bonzo76rockon bought this record on central ave in yonkers paperback exchange yo just down the street from nathans and the tangle wood boys
I can't believe that the overrated Sex Pistols and the Ramones had tremendous fame yet the Dictators got nothing...and they were probably doing this shit before the Ramones and the Pistols! Can somebody tell me what's wrong with this picture?!?
The Sex Pistols were a great band who wrote and performed all their own material. Their friend Malcolm just happened to run a fetish clothing store and let his friends rehearse there. He then became their sketchy manager. Don't blame the band for Maclarens antics. It's extremely fashionable to hate the Sex Pistols simply because they're overrated. If NMTB was just some random obscure '77 punk record, record geeks worldwide would be losing their shit over it.
Sex Pistols forever, I was there when they first broke at the tender age of 11 and it changed many lives, inspiring a punk rock movement here in Hollywood that took it to the next level.
@tylertitancycle what were mclarens antics? the sex pistols wrote and performed all their own material like you said but mclaren had great ideas and vision too. i guess everyone talks shit about the pistols because theyre bitter that ppl call them the first punk band when it was goin on in america years prior so they sorta lash out against without thinking out of frustartion
@66644538 I was making a point that too many people downplay the pistols as if they were created by their manager....a manager who had great ideas and vision, but had nothing to do with the songs and sound of the band. When I say "antics", i'm referring to his ideas and vision, which, depending on who you are, were considered either "great" or "kniving". Either way, they're still antics and in the end, those same antics played a big role in breaking up the band.
@tylertitancycle yea people defintely overplay his role he had no part in their sound or lyrics and they all pretty much did whatever they wanted. the way he marketed them was genious though and the fact that they imploded so quickly only serbed to bolster their repuation. if they had broken up 20 years later or were still around today they wouldnt have become as big as legends as theyve become
@66644538 i absolutely agree. But at the same time, it really depends who you are in terms of what makes them legendary. The pistols already had a huge influence on punk rock before sid came into the picture and before they really started to exploit the media. To bands like the Buzzcocks and Clash, it was seeing the pistols live that influenced them...not seeing them stroll down the river in a boat or curse on television.
....The Ramones had tremendous fame? What alternate universe do you live in? They were shunned and ridiculed throughout most of their career. They only finally receieved the proper mainstream attention they deserved AFTER the founding members died. Don't blame the band for that. With that, The Dictators are my second favourite band ever after the Ramones, and even Dick Manitoba himself will tell you that the Ramones are one of the greatest rock'n'roll bands of all time.
i love the dictators.

@Illuminatus1978 To me they always sounded like a comedy band. They just didn't have that dangerous aggressive edge that MC5 and the Stooges had.
