@rocknrollpriest I did sparge teh bag a little but I am not certain if it is absolutely necessary, it might help with efficiency if you do but u arent going to get a whole lot more sugar out by sparging it...and thanks, it was a nice beer, It was wicked awesome!
@ihikefar Hey bud..it's Chad from the Beer Club. I wouldn't worry about the efficiency conversion as with BIAB you should always ask for a "double crush" at Alt. Bev or wherever. This alone will boost your efficiency.
You mentioned you would modify the recipe due to the low utilization. Any chance of posting the new recipe based on your beersmith conversion for the rest of us future BIAB brewers out here in internet land?
@ihikefar Here is my adjusted recipe based on 45% efficiency (which is what I calculated as the efficiency of the original recipe)...6# Golden Promise, 1# Crystal 20L, 1/2# Carapils, 1/4# Crystal 80L
I agree about taking longer all grain, and like you say if you enjoy the brewing process then why not? Simple answer is we dont always have the time to devote or would rather watch football, etc. I havent done a biab before, but I actually thought about just doing a partial mash again. Been a longtime but I too am out of homebrew and I am tired of paying way too much for a decent beer!
Good vid and hope it comes out tasty for you :) Cheers!
Great vid JO. Can't wait for the tasting! Been wanting to try BIAB and have the same brew pot as you. Did you use fermcap drops to prevent boil overs on this batch? What about any sort of bottom to prevent scorching? I think steeljan uses a spaghetti strainer for that purpose(?).
Nice job John, I've been seeing too many 'beer review' videos on YouTube lately, this is a fresh change of pace. Like your reasoning for going with BIAB (Weather efficiency) - I want to do a lager since my basement would be perfect for the temp in fermenting, but mashing may not work out due to the cold.
@dcostell Weather wasnt really my concern here, other than I'd have to stand out in my garage in the cold for a couple hours...My mash tun is really good at holding temp, and I cover it w blankets and a sleeping bag. I LOVE AG and I am already planning the next recipe...a Dark American Pale ale (a cascadian dark ale that is less than a IPA)
@dcostell Yep, I just got through adding the ball valve to the kettle, i will edit and get it loaded later tonight or tomorrow (Birthday today, so may be tomorrow)...
Interesting BIAB. Did you begin it with all of the total water? Just asking, didn't look like it, did you add some after pulling? I always begin with total water. Also, was the grain finer-crushed, I have my grains finer-crushed to expose more of the surface to the water. Also, did you stir the grains every 15 min or so and keep the temp constant? Did you test to see if you got starch conversion complete?- I do that and just leave it mashing and keep testing until complete. Cascade bomb!
@steeljan-this was a 3 gallon 9final volume batch) and I started with about 4 gallons in the mash bc I wasnt sure about space in the vessel. I added about a 1/2 gallon after I put the grains in and topped it up. I stirred probably every 15 minutes, but I did not change the level of crush at the brew store and the temp held pretty constant. I did a conversion test and there was conversion, but for whatever reason the efficiancy was bad, prob bc of the AG crush...
I liked the method, and will def do it again, but I am thinking that I like the traditional AG more and will probably use that method primarily. The beer is chugging away as we speak and I have already added the 1st dry hop (I add them near the end of the primary ferment). I plan to move it to a keg in 2-3 days and cold crash it and add one more charge of cascades (1.5 oz)...this should turn out to be a great beer...smells awesome in the fermenter, kinda hard to let it sit...lol
@JOMalone3113 Hey, this looks like a lot of fun and your brew looks killer tasty! By any chance did you sparge the bag, or is it not neccessary?

@wonkavator33 Yes, I have been told that and I should have asked for it at my LHBS but forgot. That should def help the efficiency.

@ihikefar I dont use anything for boilovers, and I didnt use anything in the kettle during the mash (it held temp pretty well w/o needing any heat)
