  • Very usefull way to do the cilinder! I´m keeping practicing! I´m from argentina! Estoy avanzando rápido gracias a tus enseñanzas! My teacher can´t believe! Thanks!!

  • I have just started working with clay and throwing pots. These videos are clear, concise and to the point. This one, in particular helps to give me an idea of what should be happening as I begin the process of centering and getting a basic shape to the pot. Thanks so much. Keep up the videos. They are addictive!

  • Thanks for posting this Simon. Can you please talk about how soft the clay wants to be some time? I am finding that I encounter trouble when it is too stiff or if I have not wedged the clay enough and it has varying qualities. I am sure I can muddle my way to the answer through empirical testing, but hearing your comments would be very much appreciated. Many thanks for sharing all this fantastic material with us.

    Kind regards,

    Chris

  • Hi Simon. You're simply terrific and videos truly helpful. Could we use this same 7 form visual guide/aid to throwing cylinder serve as an aid to throwing bowls? or would they be different? and what stage(s)? Thanks.

  • I can´t wait till I have the time to try these shapes. I shall have the family for easter dinner on saturday, so I have to clean the house and make food. First thing sunday morning I will start my trowing wheel.

  • Awesome!!! Wonderful teaching aid. These models are fantastic. Thanks

  • Very helpful. Thanks:)

  • ha i thought those were much bigger till you picked the cone up! for a second you seemed like a Giant :) great visuals

  • same here

  • Thanks so much Simon! I was blown away by your generosity in sharing such an important lesson. I have only just found you and haven't started throwing as yet so this will be an invaluable lesson from 'THE MASTER' I bet both your father and grandfather are watching with pride and you never know they may even be taking notes!

Thanks so much again, kind regards, yours in awe, Nel (from England)

  • This really helps a lot! You mention quite a few problems I have. I'll keep this in mind when I go to class tomorrow.

  • Folks he's not kidding about the coning up technique. I found it critical in throwing good cylinders because it's a heck of a lot easier to move the clay out instead of back in. Cone in to get the height and then push it out to finish it off. :-) I owe a big thanks to Simon for this one. If you can't throw good cylinders, everything else is going to be much more difficult.

I got to Simon's shop throwing crooked, bowl like cylinders and left pulling pretty decent ones up to 10 or 11".

  • Thanks, Simon. These models will eventually find their way into eery pottery classroom.

Well done on a great idea: "The Leach Sequence".

  • SHEER GENIUS! What a wonderful representation of the stages of throwing pottery. I am in awe. This is simply pure genius. Thank you does not feel adequate to cover something so simple yet so dramatic in helping those of us perfect our skills. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It is truly appreciated. Paisley/Sam

  • I'm really enjoying this lesson.

The way you decribe #3 is just right, I wished I'd have used that the other day with a student of mine. So many more reasons to keep watching and telling more people about your great videos Simon. I feel like I'm a good teacher but you know somtimes you just have to use different discriptions & wording with people. Every time I watch another video of yours, I find new ways, words and discrptions! Thank you so much, Simon for helping us all get better! DebraRay

  • Hi Debra - thanks for your comments ! of course I am more than happy if we all learn along together in these things. Greetings to all the Colorado potters !! SL

  • wow that was strange, i thought they were huge pieces until you put your hand in there and it dwarfed them
