start very slow make sure you hit every note properly and try to stay in time even if it means playing super slow and work your speed up once you nail it slowly increase speed and repeat youd be surprised how fast youl get it if you try playing at a high tempo right away your fingers will surely get confused if your not experianced at fingerpicking

the 2nd string you pick with your 3rd finger, along with the 5th string with your thumb. The 3rd string is your 2nd finger, and the 4th string is your first finger.

if you look at the original you'll see that his thumb alternates and he doesn't use his ring finger

I think what you are doing is the way a classical guitar player would approach it. Travis picking is all about alternating bass. If anyone is interested let me know and I'll post a video response, to show what I mean.  This is kind of a pet peeve of mine.
