  • if you buy beat up containers and fix them up $1000 each

  • wow i think i will use that as an aircraft hanger. that looks great.

  • good video

  • dahm how do you afford all of this?

  • Excuse my ignorance what is shtf?

  • @MrYonomequejo crap has hit the fan

  • @MrYonomequejo SHITF (Shit Hit The Fan ) WROL (World Without Rule of Law)

  • This is a great idea if you have the space!!

  • When Nat Geo asks you to be part of their TV show .. they're laughing AT you, now with you.

What the hell were you thinking?

  • Why not place two more contaners one on each end and close it in . That way you could line the outside walls with 1" steel to make it totaly bullet proof . You could put in Doors like what they have on Ships so they can't be pulled off .

  • you can also dig a huge hole but the container in the ground for underground bunker!!!!!!!!

  • I like the idea of 4 sea containers lined up in a square shape with an open center to the sky. Kinda like a mini castle. Cut out doors and windows only on the inside so it makes for a steel fortress on the outside.

  • very cool

  • That is really smart. That is one awesome shelter and could be used for alot of stuff. Storage, prepping, or just a good tractor barn. Nice dude, nice.

  • Great idea! I have seen Conex boxes used in lots of ways, but not like this. I would assume you paid about 2500 for each box...then the rest on the roof and concrete. For the size of the structure that is a great price per square ft.

  • I would enclose both sides and add a barn door. I would keep my chickens inside the enclosed area for extra protection.

  • Ive seen these placed four squared and a garden with water cache in the center, can do alot with these. great vid

  • OK, cool, but where and how do you obtain those packing containers? Steal them?

  • @blackmetalurgist look in the yellow pages or goggle them in your area.

  • if i won the lottery

  • nice

  • how much is 1 container?

  • you need hurricane straps.

  • I am looking at using a few of these for the camp site. They are fire and thief resistant and seem like they would last forever if maintained. I was looking at 20' containers side by side with common room in middle. Basically a scaled down version of this set up. What size electrical did you run to each box? I was thinking around 100 amp or so. Would like to incorporate a rocket mass heater also. I need to win the lottery to get this all done though.

  • With the economy imploding, at least the shipping containers are still useful.

  • Prepping? Heck, this is a great idea for any farm or ranch considering building a pole barn. The containers are more than structurally sound and offer low cost secure clean storage as well.

This is definitely going to be on my mind when i eventually buy some land, and I'm really surprised I haven't seen a lot of this already.

  • What would something like that cost? $5000, $10000

  • @BubbaJ47fg probably ALOT more... closer to $30,000

  • @southernprepper1 $30k seems like a very good figure, I would say $6k for concrete, $8k for the 4 used connex boxes, depending on the age. A roof that size about $12k. Electrical rough-in and final, about $3k. Right there is $29k. If I had a roof that large, I would get the best gutters possible: amazing rainwater collection.

  • @southernprepper1

    Used containers run about $3k.

  • @BubbaJ47fg here in sc its about 2000 for the container...t includes them movin to your house

  • @BubbaJ47fg the cost is closer to $2500+ for a used container

  • this has given me so many ideas. great video

  • still don´t get what´s the sense of all this... preparation for what?!?

  • @APedroSanchez Prepare for a natural disaster or the economic storm that could hit us and take us into another great depression. This time people will not help each other like they did then. Now crime is rising and people kill people just because of the thrill of it or the sneakers they want to steal off the dead body. Its also preparing for a simpler life where YOU control the things they you need to sustain life not having others provide everything for you.

  • @southernprepper1

shouldn´t the US be the land of the free, home of the brave, the greatest country of all?

sounds more like the stoneage to me... even the middle ages were more civilized than the picture you are painting...

  • @southernprepper1 Man, well said. I hope the person you said this to will take the time to research why all of this is happening. Hopefully you just woke a sleeping sheep lol! Im really sad to say that most people in general arent aware of anything and are still stuck in the dreamworld....

  • @southernprepper1 Actually, crime has been dropping since the early to mid 90's.

  • @APedroSanchez what he said, also its a pretty kick ass building.

  • @APedroSanchez SOME people would rather be prepared for ANYHTING, and some prefer to not be prepared for anyhting. to each his own. tell you what do some digging look up how much food prices have increased in the last 10 years, look up the EPA's "dust tax" on farmers who produce our food, google "arrested for drinking whole raw milk" then google "the great depression" Then maybe you will understand why some people feel te need to store food, and essential survival equipment.

  • @jerobinson30

I don´t see nothing wrong about beeing prepared, I´m just surprised by the huge effort that some people spend on that, and disturbed by the amount of weapons and ammo that people store. There have always been and there always will be depressions all over the globe, but that does not convert a civilized country to Sierra Leone, Kongo, Somalia & other "civil war countries" (rising level of political uncorrectnes on my part, sorry for that).

    I´m just missing the link

  • @APedroSanchez I suppose it all hinges on your Definition of "civilized". remember how quickly the city of New Orleans became uncivilized during hurrican Katrina??? Thats probably the best example. As soon as the cops werent around (whether its because they were dirty, or because they went to tend to their families) Society broke down and everyone was forced to fend for themselves. If it can happen to a major American city, then some feel it could happen on a larger scale

  • @APedroSanchez Remember how quickly New Orleans became a nuthouse? Imagine that at a national level or in just your area. Some people may go overboard when prepping and just buy and buy and build and build but have no real plan. I good plan and a little common sense and there is nothing in this world you can't survive. Most people prep for tornados, hurricanes, or earthquakes. If your prepared for something major, then you will likely be prepared for anything.

  • @APedroSanchez , ok man. Ill tell you, it's for when SHTF!!!!!

  • where do you get those containers, and how much are they? roughly, if you know. nice vid too, good ideas.

  • @2skullscrushing You can find them on craigslist or just google where to buy them in your area.

  • What is the reason for not collecting rain water by law, just more control freaks?

  • thanks for the vid. very interesting use of material.

  • don't get caught collecting rain water ! it's illegal just like growing weed !

  • @TheFrostymountains its not illegal to collect rain water in SC. If it was I guess I would be a wanted man because I have 2 rain water collection systems at my house. There is some states where you cant collect rain water.

  • @southernprepper1 - And there is a Federal Law that protects you for collecting rain water... But stronger than that, we have Natural Rights that allow you to collect rain water.

  • @southernprepper1 What states forbid collecting rain water?

  • @stacky512a I dont know all of them but I heard Colorado does.

  • @southernprepper1 How on earth are they able to stop rain collection, this is one of those things that make me wonder. Its rain, I bet if they could they would stop the rain. I have 2 55 gal. barrels I just made a compost bin from 1 and I'm about to start a rain barrel, guess I better check on that one.

  • @urbanstarprepper

Lobbysts in America have gone mad, but the day will come when we get the ropes out again, it will be glorious.

  • @SturmKorps Very true!

  • @southernprepper1 REALLY? I've never heard of that! I hope Arizona isn't one of them! Out in the desert southwest, some of us rely on that much needed rain water. Oh, and southernprepper1, I can't tell you how much I appreciate what you do for the masses on the Internet. God bless you and it is my hope that one day our paths cross. Peace brother...

  • out standing

  • If you have a plane grave yard neer you get some hulls brilliant shelters

  • "Better than living in a tent"

You must be kidding. The Iroquois lived in longhouses, but were eventually defeated by technology and disease. The plains tribes did much better because they were mobile. When tshtf it will usher in a time of war.

Two directions a person can take-- and each moment, each day we choose: do we head towards fear/war or do we head towards peace/love?

What direction do you choose? Hoarding is the choice for war.

  • Great vid ....thank you for filming this and sharing

  • I am amazed of the people that now the light bulb is turning on I knew about living in shipping container since the 1960s but over 50 yrs and i still have ask for enough money for the month to buy just enough toilet paper over food for the month when I was making money wife mother sister took it away when i saved extra for cameras guns etc the items was stolen I got to get away from from this family

  • how are the trusses secured to the container?

  • @cyoungso I dont know for sure because I didnt build this at all but probably just bolted thru the plate that is sitting on it. Now Iam wishing I poked my head up there and filmed it.

  • Thats a ripper shed there, and yes it would be great for an extended family. The kids could have a hoot playng there in the rain. This is the way to go to stay away from the mobsters who run the banks. oops did i say mobsters?

  • wow. This is great stuff.

  • Great idea - thank you for shairing.

    PJF

  • Can I get some advice on making door and window holes? Is it easier to cut through with a torch...one of those smaller torches on a small propane tank, or with a saw?

  • Howdy from SC, those things have so many uses. My brain is spinning owith ideas. Just have to figure out how to get one out here to the woods. Without cutting alot of my trees down that is.

  • ive drawn up plans and priced them in WI at around $3,000 for the taller 40 footers

  • Saw some shipping containers advertised for sale on Craig's List couple months ago.

  • Well, we have waited too late, these shipping containers have gone through the roof in price. wish I would have bought a couple a few years ago

  • Your container is lot of better than used trailer.

  • I love it!

  • I wonder how much power could be made off that roof.?

  • That's a great idea. Thanks!

  • Thank you sp1 for all your great videos. This video was especially informative because I have been trying to figure out how to attach the roof over top of the shipping containers. I do have one bit of VERY IMPORTANT ADVICE... Do not close one and the central section off and leave the other open. This will leave a pocket and allow air pressure to build up and rip the roof off! So be sure to close both ends off at the same time and do not leave the doors open on one and only.

  • Super Connex setup! They also make great homes and shops!

  • That's pretty cool.

  • that was a nifty set up

  • Thanks for the comment SP. I am far from rich but I will do what I can to prep. I saw a comment by a youtuber that said "Don't even bother if you can't grow your own food, or own property." The immediate thought I had about that comment was FU. Its important to have a community of people who all pitch in, and that way stuff like this can become more affordable.

  • This looks like a great idea for a barn

  • How clever! Thanks for sharing!

  • awsome!!

  • That's a heck of an idea..thanks for posting!!

  • I just had about a million ideas just from watching this. Very cool!

  • OMG I love that...

  • you could build a huge workshop in there

  • one could also enclose the end with shipping containers making room for a cpl more families and having the center completely blocked from the ouside thus having a safe common area so if their is maybe small children or community meeting school one wouldnt worry so much about where younger children are

  • I like that building. It looks very inexpecive, and has a lot of potential.

  • how much are those shipping containers??? anyone know? id love to know

  • @MrAWAKENED1 It depends where you live. In my area $2-3K

  • @southernprepper1 That is an awsome price. You seem to always get the best prices, lol.

  • @MrAWAKENED1 you can get them used in great condition for about $1,200-1,500.

  • @MrAWAKENED1 I payed 4K for a used 40' where I live. The top of the containers are not that strong. The strength of them are on the bottom and the 4 corners.

  • nice

  • I love it! Just an idea, you could have the con-x doors facing each other with enough clearance and close off the outside gap between them if the intent is to use them for living spaces. It's another option.

  • Well done. Perhaps you already know this, but strap those trusses down if you didn't already. That will resist uplift forces from wind and doesn't cost much.

  • Very inventive use of those containers and like you said potentially unlimited variations in applications. I immediately noticed that placing a central beam and posts down the length of the center would allow placing storage platforms between the Trusses or even small rooms in the form of Dormers. By the way, what do those containers cost anyway??

  • A small 14x14 "cab" on the roof like a fire lookout. Id be done.

  • I love love love this idea! When I attended college at the University of North Dakota I recalled as a tour guide that back in the early 1900s students use to be housed in old railroad cars, each fitted with a small wood burning stove (that probably burned coal). Winters were frigid and students kept warm enough in them, though I was told was not very comfortable during the summer months. This very much reminded me of that.

  • Can't stop watching this video. It's my mind wonder into places and spaces never thought of! it answers space and storage problems in one.

  • awesome video!!! I need to show this one to my husband as an option for storage, maybe not to live in, except in an emergency.

  • In Canada those 40 footers in good condition cost around 5-6 grand.. at that price this would be crazy to build. Don't build a brick wall out of gold bricks. Regular bricks will do fine, or wood, in this case..

  • Bury them underground...

  • @lonnied1000 You can't.. they have no side strength. You'd be much better off building the equivalent out of wood, or fiberglass, or simply buying a deep burial fiberglass water holding tank.. The only way i could ever see using this to bury id if you basically use it for a concrete form, and it's way cheaper to just use concrete.. plus these are not waterproof..burying these is total nonsense.

  • @Yankeeprepperasshat Okay..thanks...

  • Ugly as a monkeys red ass but I guess it'll do the job.

Wouldn't of hurt to put more design effort into it. Living in a pretty place raises morale.

  • That was a super smart idea....

  • That's pure genius.

  • would be miserable in hot weather. try going in a metal container in august.

  • very awesome video dave. starting to give me some ideas with these shipping crates..

  • Thanks for yet another great idea. Tell you friend thanks also for letting you share his/her brilliant idea on the use of storage containers.

  • That's awesome!

  • Great vidéo: thanks !... ;-)

  • I hope you put footings under the walls of the containers. Because once the floor rusts through, she's gonna sink!

    Hopefully not though.

Great idea. huge cover with 4 separate storages. Dang that's my shop!

  • @bigjohn33able

Great question. most of the reactors in this country have safeguards for total power failure. Reactor lock down and gravity fed thermal cooling systems. Not to mention the bottled pressurised cooling agents. plenty of potassium iodide, find a retreat location away from reactor sites, and pray. Some things are just out of our control. Good luck, God bless.

  • Really good ideas man. Keep em coming. Hope you make videos more often

  • Go and watch all southernprepper1 video .. he is a retired soldier.

Yes he is rich in his knowledge of skills.. but not filty rich. IT is funny how people will think this way.

  • have you ever heard of a ( Carbide Well ) for making gas to light a house ? from the old days before power lines .. Carbide lamps.. is it safe ! heavy metals ? acetylene gas lamps ! making acetylene gas ! a big boom and a fireball hmm

  • GREAT. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE LOOSE ELECTRICITY FOR MORE THAN 30 DAYS AND ALL THE 150 NUCULAR PLANTS START TO GO INTO MELT DOWN AND WE WILL BE LIVING IN A TOXIC WASTE LAND. WHAT DO WE PREPPERS DO ABOUT THIS? ANYONE GOT AN ANSWER?

  • @bigjohn33able Every time somebody say grid down that's what i think of. Your like only 1 of 3 people I have ever seen ask that question.

  • @blakke29223 I HAVE ABOUT A YEARS SUPPLY OF FOOD AND PLENTY OF GUNS AND AMMO BUT LIVE ABOUT 60 MILES FROM A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT. I THINK THEY WILL ALL START TO MELT DOWN AS SOON AS THIER BACKUP POWER FAILS IN ABOUT 30 DAYS. I JUST DONT KNOW WHERE TO RUN TO. I THINK WE WILL LIVE IN A VERY RADIOACTIVE INVOIRMENT AFTER 60 DAYS AND STARVING WILL BE THE LEAST OF OUR WORRYS. ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS ABOUT THIS. SEND THEM FOR THIS CONCERS ALL OF US PREPPERS.

  • Can you please tell us how the trusses are attached or do a follow up video and show us. Also, the question about securing to the ground? Thanks for the Great Ideas!! Keep up the good work!

  • Excellent idea. Both for a group retreat or for the single small farm homesteader.

  • Great idea!

  • Wow I wish I could say that I have earned over 35k with my husband... I made almost 20K in 2010 but that was working 6days a week, open to close about 50hrs a week. On average if I have a "full-time" job, Im lucky if I make about 13k in a year's time.

  • That is a pretty interesting setup. I'm working on securing some off the grid property and would like to have some type of similar setup.

  • thank you for the share. Now you got my hubbys wheels churning. Well there goes my yard..lol Great idea.

  • There is a smaller building much like that where I live. It has solar and wind power however it is a business. Very interesting design.

  • Thats an awesome idea thanks for sharing it brother.

  • Interesting.

What were those containers being used for again?

  • More practical ideas! A little interioir insulation and a woodstove..... you would be very comfortable and safe. Thx.

  • I love it. Clever and very affordable for 5000 SF of infinite potential configuration. Imagine the same setup with skylights flooding the central area... Maybe capable of a smallish garden on a pinch. Great info as usual. Thanks so so much for the time and efforts you donate to this teaching... Heck as far as I am concerned you ARE EXTREMELY RICH, in knowledge, connections and a positive attitude.

  • Looks really nice. If you had to you could always set up tents or other shelters in the common area if it got too crowded. Very ingenious idea and probably very affordable. God bless brother.

  • Thank you southernprepper1 for making these videos! I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this idea. It is fabulous. I wish I had known of this before building our big barn. : )

Don't pay attention to the critics. It is easy to criticize when you aren't making the videos. Appreciate all that you do and your willingness to share & help other people.

  • What a fantastic idea!

  • Thanks for the post. Great idea.

  • Please refrain from saying Iam rich. I show alot of things to give people ideas and I dont own this at all like I said in a prior comment. Prep as best as you can on what you have. Iam tired of address this to individuals so I will soon make a video about it. I have never made more than 35k both me and my wife so Iam a far away from being rich. I will tell you in a video what Ive done to achieve a level of not needing much money to get by. Priority of what you want in life is the answer.

  • @southernprepper1 That is why I love the "block" button my friend. Trolls and problem starters are inevitable on the internet but the power is in your hands. I enjoy your videos along with engineer's as well and never got the impression of masses of wealth. Shame on this person for assuming stuff. Keep up the great work and this video in particular has answered a great deal of questions for in the event I come across a large sum of money! Take care my man!

  • @southernprepper1 I think you are rich, but not in the material way. You seem to be living a life you enjoy with your family and that is real riches.

About priorities, the moment you spend a dollar more than you earn you are poor. A lot of people forget that debt can make the richest man poor in time. It not all about how much you earn, its about what you spend your money on.

Thanks for showing us all of the interesting retreats. It really gives food for thought.

  • @southernprepper1 Hey, David. based on what you've just posted, I have to say that you have done well with your resources. Very impressive, for sure.

The structure in this video is just awesome and such a great idea and one could go so many ways with this simple design. Thanks for putting this one up. Very nice...

  • @MotorCityPrepper This set up belongs to a friend not me. Iam just happy he let me film the great idea.

  • @southernprepper1 Oh, I know that. Sorry for a confusing comment. I meant to say that your compound is awesome and you have done so well with limited resources. You've proven it can be done. Great job.

That container building you show is just sweet!!

  • @southernprepper1 You are rich brother. Knowledge is worth way more than any money would ever be. So to me you are rich. Nothing wrong with that you still the same person and that is all that matters. thanks for posting and I think that is a real prepper's shack..lol

  • @southernprepper1 LOL first thing the recruiter told me when I joined the military was "you are not gonna get rich" - he was right!

  • @southernprepper1 Who thinks you are rich? You seem to get awsome deals on your things. Rich people often do not bother looking for those deals. From everthing I have seen from you, you are medium to lower middle class who is good at budgeting.

  • Wonderful idea ...

  • Cool structure. Neat to see it on video. Had they put those shipping containers on ones that were already in the ground you'd have a basement or storm shelter area too.

  • Anyone questioning the price of these can simply add the free square footage you get with them, the amount of time for labor you will not be paying, and the ease of installation to even out the costs

  • @southernprepper1

That steel would get cold in the winter. They should insulate that with some spray foam and polyurea. Lol.... Hope things are moving forward with your boy.

  • My concern would be wind blowing the roof off. Just another reason to enclose it.

  • You sure put out some good ideas for those looking to take stuff. Hopefully those who might figure they will take the stuff they want/need, will understand that those occupying the "safe locations" already will have weapons to defend them.

  • ware can you pick one up ??

  • @galegregory97comcast Check the yellow pages.

  • @southernprepper1 how much do these containers typically cost?

  • @galegregory97comcast Craigslist

    \

  • These konex boxes are pretty universal you can pretty much do anything at all with them and this here is proof

  • will small arms rounds bounce around in metal containers? as apposed to log structures, what about heat factor above ground?

  • its an awesome idea. you dont have to buy the first shipping container you see ive seen them as low as 1200.

  • That is a great storage space! That set up can be used for many things.

  • I saw one video where a guy did build up a wall around the conex's he put underground. it is a good idea if you can get your hands on enough concrete block but then you have the cost of I-beams and sheet steel to make somewhat of a makeshift roof, then fill in and sod. It could be done but it would be mucho bucks.

  • I like this idea, even though now you have to really search for deals on connex containers. It's easier and a quicker build than a structure big enough for 4 families. You could use the inner "court as a group kitchen.

  • Shipping containers are handy but expensive, $2500-3000 each. I think it's be a lot cheaper to just frame in the sides and go with a conventional structure.

  • SMART

  • A man door or windows are a must. Any structure that has the only lock on the outside is only going to get you trapped inside, What if someone comes when your sleeping and locks you in? you will die in their unless you have cutting torch inside.

  • Wow. Ive had using shipping containers as an idea for years but this I hadnt thought of. What a great way to make a HUGE secure space.THank you again for such an informative video Southernprepper. God bless. Hope your son is doing ok. BTW, would i be possible to get the copies of the plans they used for this? Thank you again for all your doing.

    Best,

    Patrick

  • cool structure.

  • window would be needed.

  • Great Idea there, great stuff
