Here's an idea I cam up with. Instead of using a gray background o see better. make a white background, make a second layer and make it black, Now just change the opacity if the black layer to make different shades of gray. Hope that's helpful.

I don't really think this qualifys as a critique(did I spell that right I'm not sure <_<) because your art is MUCH better than mine, but maybe try adding certain folds in the clothing, since the clothes aren't completely flat and stiff, there are little wrinkles and other things to pay attention to...uhmn I'm a big fan of yours and I just wanted to say I love you guys

Hello Scoot. I was just wondering if you are capable of making a more manga/anime like art direction in your work. I have always wondered if you are capable of drawing in the art form and you just use your current art direction ( Which is awesome in it's own right) for more originality and or because it might be easier to animate. @UltimaLinkStephen Not at all. This is merely a tutorial showing how I draw personally. I don't always use a skeleton either. It wasn't really necessary for this tutorial either. I usually only use it for complex poses.

good video! it helped me out a lot on the clipping masks and shading. i'm kind of new to photoshop so this gave me a few good tips on how to draw people. I've always been more of an animal drawer but this helped with how to touch up a bit on my people drawing.

how do you recomend having the tracking with the tablet be? because mine has 2 modes 1 where it follows where you put the pen on the tablet and the other only moves when you move then pen no mater where it is on the tablet

il offer some things that pop up in my mine as a i watched this and read some coments

1. its 6 or 7 (im not sure witch) heads = a full an adult

2. @BlackStringedWolf i think the way you do your legs are good since it suits your style

3. even if you are doing some thing on paper you can still use this

4. i think one of the problems you have is that you leave things under the hair that should not be there (by this i mean mainly eyes some times are under the hair yet still can be seen)

question i havent followed this tutorial but when ever i add layers and save the file it forces me to make it a PSDD file how do you make it that it is a format that Deviant Art could read and upload

@GaiaChrono First you'd need to choose what layers you want to use and merge the layers. Then you can change the format under "Save As". I usually save as a PNG file.

Geez this video is long. What was the fail at the beginning? Is it the screen blurring up? I just got GIMP recently and it's similar to Photoshop so might be able to do this. Your feet are bigger than mine. I wear a size 8.5. I don't GIMP has brushes like that 20:03. Why are you drawing an outline again? I would probably select certain areas and just simply fill it with color. That way is much easier than using a brush for coloring in my opinion.

Yeah the picture you made is definitely AE Scoot before the post apocalyse. I might be able to do some shading on GIMP. I'm not sure if Gimp has a clipping mask but you can select an area and it will only draw inside the area. Characters with Heterochronia are cool. I know about this outer glow thing and I'm not sure if GIMP has it. This tutorial may be useful for me. GIMP has a cloud effect too. GIMP may be lacking some effects.

Now, I finally realize that you usually make your characters have their hands either in their pockets or not showing at all. I kind of find myself having a hard time with hands as well. Can you draw hands well enough? If so I think you will be better then my hands.

The reason K is black is becuase B stands for Blue, so they used the last letter of Black for its reference.

I can offer you some critique.

I'd say the weakest point on your works, are the legs. You generally just draw them like straight lines, when they are a lot more complex. Try to study those areas

I'm not the greatest artist either, but you can take a look at my own anatomy studies. They are on my dA Scrapbook (BlindStingray). There's a very quick tutorial on how to draw legs on my own style

@WHOOKOSMedia BTW, I believe you should also work on clothing folds. They're what give life to clothes, and allow you to show many things (such as wind, or even the previous pose of the character :0)

It's actually hard to get used to them, but once you do, they can be VERY useful, and good looking xD

I suggest to mark where the knee's are in the Skeletal structure so that you could draw the legs a bit more proportionate. But other than that, you draw very well and in proportion.

I use GIMP b/c It is free =P

But I took a class at school which used PhotoShop. Both are good, PhotoShop might have a few more useful features (and several not so useful) more then GIMP, but some parts arn't as good as GIMP or don't have as many features(like gradients) As for which is harder to learn, most people say GIMP is harder. But I never has any problems learning either. It all dempends which you learn to use first.

Btw, GIMP can do everything in this tutorial.

@randomretardedpeanut Photoshop is more complex. GIMP seems to be lacking some effects. GIMP may be able to make a picture kind of like this but not as good as Photoshop. I got to admit though GIMP has more features then I thought but it's a bit hard to use.

This is perfect! I'd say this is better than any photo shop tutorial I've seen since it concentrates on how to do the art. I'm definitely going to use it to do some of my own drawings.

Btw, you mentioned you're using a tablet (which I know this is impossible otherwise) but may I ask what brand you use? I know my brother just got a Bamboo tablet recently, so I was just wondering what you use. Just curious really.
