This is a real as it gets but the music is still enjoyable to listen to. I like to hear bands sing for real just to see how different they sound as opposed to a recording. Pretty good for being live.
What an incredible joyous sound ! I hear this and I want to embrace all mankind. This sound gives me back hope when I have lost it. Truly wonderful. Thanks to the poster for going through the trouble of recording-re-encoding, and uploading here.
ok...one more thing...sorry...I am really tearing this vid apart now... there is no bass player either... and if you have bass on your SOUND SYSTEM you can obviously hear a bassline...but no bass player... again... this may just be a really fancy kareoke show.
On another review... I take that last statement back...I am pretty sure the mandoline player IS actually playing..and all the drummers.. but the girl vocal part is definitely not being sung by those girls. But however they mixed in that part, they did it well with good timing. OK..I am going to shut up now and stop my crazy analysis of this video lol.
If you look at 2:31...dude is definitely not playing the mandolin part either. It is quite possible that the only live sound we are hearing is the vocals. BUT still... not trying to be an a hole... just pointing it out. Still amazing recordings they have made.
Great song and great group. A little disappointed that the female backing vocals are prerecorded..you can notice that the girls aren't singing anything except the African language parts. Not sure how much of this is actually live. But I guess for a huge broadcast like this...you want to sound perfect. Regardless, still a great group.
This is a great song. It sounds perfect although the lead vocals could have been a little louder. I would love to see them do this in concert. A cool clip.
Oh I completely agree, but it it feels like it's billed as "Peter Gabriel and the Afro Celts" when in reality he is only a guest vocalist. If I were in their shoes I don't think I could help feeling a bit of resentment towards Peter and the attention being payed to him.
I feel kind of bad for them in this. While peter brings them wider acclaim, he invariably will over shadow them when they are together. Larla has one of the best voices I have ever heard but he was shown as basically just another backup singer, and I'm pretty sure the guy in the trenchcoat is responsible for at least 50% of the work the band puts in and David didn't acknowledge him at all.
I'm so jealous!, how can be possible you have this tv show where such a band!! and what a man!!! my great Peter can be together !!!! making music .......ahhhhh this music!
maybe it is the really difference with Third World.
At the end of the music, Letterman could have greeted Iarla also, but he ignored him... And Iarla, so humble, bent in gratitude. Congratulations Iarla!
Agreed larla is an awesome vocalist! It really takes a lot to outshine Gabriel on a studio recording, but when his voice come in on that track!!! It's amazing.
yes!.. Iarla is also a brilliant person... he has that beautiful voice and the personality also. hereafter his voice will be very recognized, because he deserves...
Thanks so much for this !!!! I never knew of this---a reason to watch Letterman after all, I suppose. Awesome song and performance. Beautiful blend of music and voices---thanks Peter !!!!!!!!! And the house band even breaks into "Solsbury Hill" for the outro to the commercial.......... Thanks again ! Great post !!!!!!!!! Peace:-)

Why don't bands like this play on talk shows anymore? Now it''s just shitty indie rock bands. *Shudder.*

Did you alter the audio on this? It's not as I recall from the show, and sounds a bit "off" from the live performance.
