  • Why is everyone saying it wasn't helping and it was just a speed painting?

Personally, it helped me IMMENSELY. It was just the things I was looking for; Water, mountains, sky and clouds. I can't find any other tutorials that look somewhat decent anywhere, so thank you!

It looks amazing. I love your work <3 Keep it up!

  • @idrawgirls

The tutorial should help some people, but I'd say humbleness goes a long way. Also, phrases like "things like that" etc. can be annoying, especially when you said them too much. Try to listen to criticisms; they're for your own good.

I can see your skills are mature, but not your personality.

  • I actually enjoy the messy look of speed paintings. Sometimes, adding more detail distracts from the overall composition of the painting.

  • Thanks a lot! I like your tutorial. Shared it on my Facebook Fan page:)

  • O.O

    Damn.

    You're amazing!

  • I want to ask a stupid question, how do you color the landscape??? Please answer!!!!

  • Awesome!! Im glad I found this. I bought a new intuos tablet to create paintings thanks!!

  • what tablet are you using?

would you sa that a Wacom Capture is suitable for this kind of art?

  • ok question...how to do color over your drawing? do u use a different layer.....do u use a specific setting or option on the layer? (:

  • @kagomeadc He sets the layer to Overlay I think.

  • @Ultermarto awww ok i'll try that out thanks

  • great job!!!

  • Well, I really like this! (: Helps a lot.

  • can you do one in real time and not sped up so you can do a step by step tutorial? please

  • This is adobe photoshop?

  • @jakubas1000 yes.

  • @idrawgirls how to deal with the tree and glass, I feel puzzled when i deal with the tree. i mass the trees so on my painting it is hard to tell the tree are in front or far away。 if i want to draw the landcape better do i need to pritice the real landcape or learn from a photo?

  • I kind of agree with fuxmedia. This looks rushed and the point of the tutorial is to make the viewer or reader "understand" and learn what is being taught. not rushed through the process otherwise it's basically just another speed painting

  • @FeedtheMachine100 I would say the same to you. Do you rather I not post? right... ;-)

  • @idrawgirls I really appreciate that you posted this. And don't get the wrong idea, you made a beautiful painting. But you know how it is, it's a terribly hard to find step-bystep tutorials

  • @FeedtheMachine100 Check your inbox for useful articles. All your questions could not be fit in one video. Go watch all my videos if possible. This is not magic, it is education. ;-)

  • @idrawgirls Thank you my friend, ;). My schedule is too crowded to fit in art class, Not to mention no money on hand. Much appreciated.

  • @idrawgirls I DEMAND ARTICLES NOW

  • @FeedtheMachine100 speedpainting IS rushed. the point is to capture the essence of the scene and not go into details.

what is important here is value, light, composition... and a loose and free hand. if u have understood just one or two of these things from this video, then the video has been worthwhile.

check out David Levy. his techniques are based on speedpaint and he does some amazing work.

  • @CT2507 Thanks!

  • SO i got pretty close for a first attempt at making one of these matte painting.. but still struggled very much.

is there any videos of yours that can be done by complete beginners to intermediate/beginner with out too much frustration? ^_^

  • did u go to school for drawing?

  • @BiggamingXX20 Best school is working with my art director at NCsoft and many co workers. ;-)

  • Good good

  • what is that awesome "flat brush" you used on the sky and clouds? it is pretty fantastic!

  • @akuarashi Yep, just squeeze your default round in PS then that's it.

  • These images are quite impressive, but for tutorials, I think these videos are really not helpful for people who want to get to it and really do not know where to start. By these videos I mean 3 or 4 times the original speed and then stuff like "and here some more detail, and there some tone" and all that.

For someone like you it seems natural to just do it, but people who look at tutorials want to know more about the how and more about the why.

  • @fuxmedia Meaning, you need to go watch my other video before this one. There are easier ones you know, the DVDs I bought from the older pros are faster than this, but I still learn something from that. Some are beyond me, but I will get there. Patience my friend is good quality of men. ;-)

  • Haha this reminded me of the Guild Wars 2 Art. No wonder since you work at Arenanet :D. Great tutorial btw thanks

  • @iLinusification LOL, the truth comes out. I was there for 8 years ;-)

  • fuzzy, basic...

  • could you send me some more information about brushes and all kind of pen pressure u used? :) thnx!! very nice work!!!!!! :) :)

  • What is your brush properties on the first brush you use.

  • @snookerrocks Default CS5. check your inbox for more useful info.

  • @idrawgirls send it to me please, thanks

  • Give me 100 years of practice and i still wouldn't be able to get it anywhere near yours at all! Probably the most impossible thing for me.

  • thanks for the tutorial, my product after this is ok but the color turns out quite weird. Oh well

  • i have a question about the flat brush. I don't see it in the PS preset. How can I create one?

  • @ 2:47 i think 'ripple' the word you trying to say??

  • Comment removed

  • When I tried this, it looks like it, but not like a painting. More..plastic-like.

I have a tablet now, so any tips on utilizing pen pressure better? How do you even adjust it anyway?

  • @Howitzas Just make sure it has pressure sensitive. I will also send useful articles in your inbox. peace! "Congratz!

  • @idrawgirls I have the same problem! Can you send them to me too? Whenever I draw digitally it ends up looking cartoony and plastic-y. And I want to make it more painty!

  • i have always wondered how you look like... i guess you're asian?

  • @ManOfSteel2627 Check out the new video on my channel, also I have a new video on how to draw Man of Steel. You will see me there. ;-)

  • @ManOfSteel2627 Check out the new video on my channel, also I have a new video on how to draw Man of Steel. You will see me there. ;-)

  • @idrawgirls ok : )

  • @idrawgirls was pretty sure you were a little, thin chinese guy... didn't expect what i saw... not saying you look bad you don't!! :)

  • @ManOfSteel2627 LOL, I know. ;-)

  • Doesnt look like a girl this. ;P

  • @ponyunyun You have to back up about 3 feet, bend over and point your finger to the floor, then spin to the right 17 times. Now get up point your finger in between your eyebrows and spin to the left 19 times. Now come back and take a look at it again.

  • @idrawgirls Ahaha, it has definitely made an improvement to my outlook on this. But really I forgot to say earlier, very well done on the painting (Y)

  • @ponyunyun No problem, glad it helps. ;-)

  • @ponyunyun No problem, glad it helps. ;-)

  • Wonderful technique--and a great lesson in how to create space and color. I am inspired!

  • @Steeledrake27 Always happy to hear the video is helpful, mission accomplished. ;-)

  • @idrawgirls what brush do you use in photoshop to get that effect?

  • @VLProduction1002 Focus on value instead of brush then you will get that effect with just any brushes. My two cents.

  • I'm not american but you sound like bruce lee.. are u from asia or smth?

  • @joaodapinhanhara Watch more video on my channel, I show up in some of the recent video. I love Bruce!!!

  • I actually I'm going to try painting landscapes in photoshop thanks to you! :D Thank you very much for the inspiration~

  • @Nagusame No problem, keep practicing is the key and focus on 1)Shape 2) light or value (color) and 3) edges

  • @idrawgirls thank you for the tips!

  • You're so talented. Every time I view one of your videos, I'm inspired to try myself, but my technique is years away from your kind of standards (I haven't been doing it long. I'm only experienced in the technical side of Photoshop, not painting.)

Your videos always help me out though. You are awesome, man! Keep up the AWESOME work!

  • @PatchCornAdams722 Also, I'm just curious at to what kind of brush settings you use? It'd be infinitely helpful to get an idea of how you work! Thanks.

  • @PatchCornAdams722 Thank, I am glad the video is helpful. There are more on my channel. check your inbox for useful articles and brushes.

  • your videos help me out so much when you explain everything through! one last question though, do you do all the gresycale in one layer and the tonal in an above layer or do you have many layers for your mountain and sea?

  • This is sick in the face! Ò_Ó I've spent hours trying to make a landscape on photoshop, that ended up looking like like... paper with ink spilled all over it! Oh maaaan.... how do you do this T_T

  • @Janarielsensei I've been doing it for years, mostly characters. Environment and landscape is not really my cup of tea. I still need more days and months of practice. So yeah paint a lot then.

  • @Janarielsensei it's all about time and patience, to give every detail what it needs ( colour, shape.. ) it's art man !

  • @Janarielsensei This is pritty simple generally. You have to see... See...SEE relations betwen shadows and higlights because any picture in your head is this relations. You dont need to draw much precise, just see and draw what u see, points, lines, solids...

  • you make money doing this?

  • @TheOnetimeatbandcamp I've been a professional concept artist for game since 2003. So yes.

  • @idrawgirls rock on, you're frekin talented

  • Respond to this video... rock on, you're freckin talented

  • @TheOnetimeatbandcamp Talent aside, I put in time, lots of years. ;-)

  • This guys name never fails to give me chills lol

  • @RedJester93 You think too much, take your mind out of the gutter. We need to be more honest and enlighten, this society has polluted your mind.

  • you're really good, could i also ask what brushes do you use? and an irrelevant question: how long have you been painting environments? because you make pretty difficult stuff look waayyy too easy :P

  • @soundslikedeathvox I have been a concept artist since 2003, but 99% of the time I design armors and characters, not env. thx. check your inbox.

  • @idrawgirls thank you so much for the reply and the awesome links :D *subscribes*

  • @soundslikedeathvox No problem.

  • would u be interested in making it slow, i mean the brush selection part and color selection part

  • @panditsachin You can pause on certain part, I can't make it slow it is already done, go check some other videos on my channel.

  • this is great- your picture turned out beautiful.

also, you have a curious accent...where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?

  • @Frogz4196 It is irrelevant. Fujian.

  • @idrawgirls oh, thank you~

  • Thank you for this! What size canvas do you usually work with?

  • @feny8 I always wonder about how that question comes about. I will send you a long explanation, check your inbox.

  • @idrawgirls can you send me as well? I'd like to know, too, what canvas size you normally use! :)

  • @spiegelbild90 Yes, I can.

  • Thanks for the tutorial! Is this all on one layer?

  • @silversteampunk Some what I tend to keep very few layers then merge then paint over. Check your pm for detail.

  • actually, idrawgirls can draw what he wants !!!!!!!!!!

  • @Saidood LOL

  • @idrawgirls what brushes do you use? and may i also know what canvas size? that would be much appreciated!

  • @waterandink OK, check your inbox.

  • Useless tutorial for beginenr.

  • @valttu94 true.

  • @idrawgirls not agree, it's a very good tutorial. what tablet have you got?

  • @jacksonremix35 Wacom. ;-)

  • @idrawgirls ok. thanks.

  • @valttu94 if you're a beginner I recommend you to search for ctrlpainter in youtube he tells you good basics of digital painting

  • 6 people are right miserable bastards. What's to dislike?

  • My friend, please post the brushes you use in the disrciption.

  • @MrLordFiren my friend, they are on my website. You can't post a link on youtube.

  • @idrawgirls Write me a pm! I cant find them on youre website.. Greets!

  • @MrLordFiren OK.

  • good tut bad really should told us your settings

  • Good work... I just finally got access to a tablet laptop, and coming from a pencil drawing background, these digital painting vids are very helpful. This vid taught me a lot about how to make a quick "sketch" painting to convey lighting, atmosphere, depth, etc. Being so detail-oriented, your technique is a breath of fresh air... thank you

  • @prometheuszero9 Detail is good, but the big picture comes first. Otherwise there is no place to put detail in. ;-)

  • Very skillful and helpfu, thanks.

But you shouldn't worry, you should a regular speed video on how to draw landscaping. l

  • @captin0mega Go watch other video on my channel, there are some regular speed.

  • Thank you so much for your videos.

  • 2:48 ripple

  • Landscape is something I do have trouble with, so this is a huge help, thanks heaps.

  • @Arkturium Me too, no problem. ;-)

  • its good that people teach others what they know- i thank u for the help :D

  • @Silberschutz No problem. ;-)

  • What settings do you use for your brushes? I can never find a setting that i really like.

  • @dragonlance87 Default setting and make sure it has pressure sensitive. But really...but that is not the point.

  • You're awesome! Your tutorials are much appreciated! :)

  • which program do you use?

  • @dimdiocom I just send all the detail, check your PM.

  • Please do a tut on dramatic angry ocean waves. Thx. =)

  • Thanks for the vid! much appreciated!

  • @stuntbear81 That what we like to hear! I am mostly trying emphasis the principle because it applies to both traditional and digital. It is like science or the ultimate truth about painting.

  • Xia,great tutor, finally i found you on youtube. I like your site. For almost 2 years i try to rise my own painting skills to your level. But it is almost impossible.)

First drawing lesson from your site was a drawing of the evil bunny with a gun.

There are two great masters, who improved my painting skills very much. You and Dylan Cole. You helped with speed painting and details,Dylan Cole and Gnomon Workshop helped with a basis matte painting.

Big respect and gratefulness for what you are doing

  • @SuperFoOnT Thanks for the compliment. LOL, but I am way way more junior than the Master Dylan Cole. He is soooooooo beyond GREAT of the greatness. Looking at his work makes me feel so little and inspire to be better at the same time. Practice then you will get better and better. Art never stop being better.

  • @idrawgirls

Hope you'll open your own international studio...)))

You already deserved it. To be honest-never thought i would be talking to you. you have another comrade in Ukraine(guess you don't know where is it...)))))

  • @SuperFoOnT I know where Ukraine is. I have a few good friends from there.

  • thanks alot man! i'm still a noob but i learned so much from you!!

  • @tenegon NP, keep it up. We all start from somewhere.

  • wow thats fast.. :D amazing

  • Hi there, can you tell me which brushes were used in the painting?

  • @Bankaina well, can't pm you so too bad. later.

  • thnk u sir

  • how did you start out digital painting? i so suck at it because i am confused on how to use the colors right. etc

  • Great video, thanks for sharing!

  • I can do landscapes, but I suck ASS at drawing people. Oh God it's embarrassing.

  • @ANONONJEWTUBE I'm the opposite! We should swap abilities for a day! XD

  • @ANONONJEWTUBE Everyone has to start somewhere. Of course my first drawing is suck. Did you think that was my first painting? ;-)

  • @idrawgirls Well of course not :P Thanks mate for answering my comments and PMing me and all that. You're a treasure, and you're doing an incredible service for aspiring artists.

  • I've watched your tutorials but I still don't get it.. what kind of brushes did you use?

  • @karrina147 I got the same question

  • So if I do not have any basic painting skill, I will not be able to paint with IPAD, right? And it will be wasting money if I buy a IPAD painting apps without any painting knowlege.

  • @toyyou2jp ide start out drawing on paper with a pencil, then move up from there to digital and painting.

  • @pimpwacker TRUE!!!

  • nice fuggin work

  • Awesome tutorial, I know this is a year old but thanks man.

  • This makes me want to be good at photoshop.

  • You make it look so easy ..

  • @ssx332 like

  • what type of tablet are u using?

  • DDDD: This just proves that what my teacher said about value is true. And watching this, I think I learned a new way of thinking about making backgrounds or landscapes.

  • I think vegetation is the word you're looking for. Plantation = farm.

  • can you please tell me what program and the type of brush your using? also the pen pressure? thanks :)

  • I would gladly watch your tutorials even if they were twenty to thirty minutes long. x3

  • @jinnyschannel I would prefer if they were like 5 minutes long.

  • Your videos are all super helpful and I've learned a lot about drawing on photoshop with my tablet from them, but I can't understand your layers. If you use any? or if you have several for colors or separate objects? Basically what I'm asking is if you can explain how you use layers

  • @boardriderx He mentions that he does use layers in this video; at the least his greyscale values are different to the color, as he uses an overlay layer to wash color straight on top of the greyscale values.

  • when does he add new layers? like he must have atleast a hundred! :/

  • are u german? ^^

  • @1Pr0digy i think he's asian...

  • @Flynnia ya, just tried to range in the accent ;)

  • its kinda like really good tutorial!

  • inspirational video

  • sorry, but is this Photoshop?

  • @mokunakoi yes

  • @mokunakoi no it is a corel painter 11

  • Oh I fucking HATE you. I thought I was good :\

  • Do you use other brushes than they are given in photoshop? Can you tell me, where to get the brushes you use?

    Thanks!

  • do you use ur mouse or pen and tablet?
