I actually quite like Gibson, Krist Novoselic of Nirvana played Gibson and he got some pretty nice tones. Think I prefer Fender and Rickenbacker though. It's all down to opinion really.

It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, the best Fender is a P-Bass, hands down haha. my opinion of course.

The best Rickenbacker, is Lemmy Kilmisters signature, the best Music Man is the classic Stingray, anything Leo Fender came up with, he never got it wrong.

i have 2 fender Jazz basses, and they're awesome and all, but i think they're incredibly overrated and ridiculously overpriced. i think Spector is my favorite as far as tone, price and playability...but who doesn't want a Ric?

@LimitedPassions Look at early Jack Bruce playing with Cream (which I'm sure you've probably seen already), Gibson basses have had their say and are not all bad. I own a Rick and a few Fenders and love them but a Gibson bass can have a great tone too.

Fenders are nice basses, I used to hate fenders but I recently bought myself a jazz bass and I am pleased with the sound I can get out of it; however, I believe Lakland makes some sick basses and they still maintain that traditional look.
