Standard Flex is a combat management system, much like AEGIS is, though designed to do different things.
The SF 300 was the first class of ships to use it. Since then we've build six other Standard Flex equipped classes. The Thetis Class OPV, the Knud Rasmussen Class OPV, the Mk1 Holm class, the Mk 2 Diana class, the Absalon Class and the Ivar Huitfeldt. On top of the that the Niels Juel Class corvette has been retrofitted with it.
The Ivar Huidtfeldts will be the same lenght, but have a lower profile and displace about a thousand tonnes less. Basicly, they are the same ship as the Absalon-class, but without the roll-on/roll-off deck. They will be faster, 28 knots to 23 knots. The armament will be the same, but the Ivar Huitfeldt's will have more advanced sensory systems.
The Ivar Huidtfeldt class are true frigates, where the Absalon class are multi-purpose ships armed as frigates.
@jakobpind It's possible a bit longer, but the profile is almost identical, and so is the basic outline of the ships, except that the Iver Huitfeldt class is one deck lower, and almost one thousand tonnes lighter. Hence the higher speed.
So while they might be a tiny fraction longer, they are not larger, they are smaller. In fact, if a frigat was larger than the Absalon-class it would not be a frigate anymore, but a destroyer.
@fnukket Iver Huitfeldt Class Frigates are actually smaller than the Absalon class - but Huitfeldt are a little more advanced and carry more weapons, including cruise missiles - and 5-7 years? Come on - if I remember right, our navy should be finished with the first one in 2011
well... if they HAVE to be a 1000 feet plus you are probably right. But there's French nuclear carrier "Charles de Gaulle" at 900 feet, and the future "Richelieu" which will be bigger, close to or above 1000 feet. ;)
Calling a whaler (large open boat) and a couple of skiffs armed with RPGs and assault rifles Battleships is stretching it a bit, but yeah. It was a good job.
(And this time Absalon even carried a jail, as the first RDN ship in 50 years if not more..)
Well, they can, depending on the mission at hand. FlexModules are sort of like the LCS's mission modules, except that we've extended the concept to include a hospital, C&C facilities, a jail and a couple of other things.
Btw, I made an error when I made the clip, The troops aren't housed on the flexdeck, so it can carry 200 troops and their vehicles.
I left it open deliberately. Absalon will take anything you can stuff in a container. From the generic (Staff offices) to the specific (Air Force Containerized base)
The RDN keeps getting new modules as they go along. They didn't have any jail during the first deployment to Aden (Rather awkward since they actually caught some pirates), they do now.
What this rather long speech means is that I don't know what all the modules do. Some of them aren't disclosed either.
That missile knocked out a 114 mm (approx 5") shell during testing. However, I am unsure as to what kind (and more importantly how fast) that shell was going. What are the stats of the type of gun round it intercepted? Also, 5" shells (I think) are in some of the Arleigh Burkes. Thus, again, the problem is not a fault specific to battleships.
The 114mm (4.5 inch) shell moves 400 to 1000 fps faster than shells from the mk7, depending on how worn the mk 7 in question is.
So it's faster, smaller and fired at shorter range and at a much lower angle, all of which makes it harder to track.
Take note that I'm not arguing that a SeaWolf can outright destroy a 16'' armour piercing shell, but it can nudge it enough to make it miss, giving the launch platform enough time to launch everything its got, and the scoot.
Well sorry to say but Canada would never adopt a Danish ship due to our small fights over islands in the north xD However I read that Canada is looking to get 15 new warships... so you can be sure to soon get some new ships :)
@wcresponder Same opinion from me - great video, but the music... ...It just seems odd. Here's a question for the public: Why is the U.S. the only nation that has built carriers of the 1000 foot long+ size range?
@wcresponder yeah, but canada lacks the motivation to spend money on upgrading our military... mabie if china invades south korea... tho apparently canada is building a series of supply type ship for replenishing warships at sea, and they are set to be the best in that class in the world... they are called the joint support ship, would cost nearly 1 billion dollars each, and be 2x larger then any current canadian navy ship.. i doubt they gunna spend more to develop a native frigate too
Btw, I'll update the vid sometime in the near future. I took an indecently large amount of pictures of Absalon when I visited Fredderikshavn Naval Base with Georg Stage Earlier this year.
That is bad ass ship :)

so ithe flex or roro deck is for 40 vehicles (i guess light tanks or armoured transports or smthng) + 7 batte tanks?
or either 40 vehicles, or 7 battle tanks?
this ship is massive! =S cannons missiles, a small army, helicopters, boats. xD i wish the belgian navy was as awesome as the danish!
we just got 2 lousy frigates we bought from the dutch T_T

@fnukket
The Ivar Huitfeldt Class frigates? They are actually a tad smaller.
chrthiel 1 year ago
@chrthiel No, The Ivar Huitfeldt class is about 1,4 times bigger. It is a NATo frigate. I think that the standard flex ships are patrol boat class.
But the Ivar Huitfeldt is larger!

@LarS1963 You are not right.
1: it's called IVER, not IVAR
2:IVER class will be about 1 meter longer, than Absalon class.
3:The armament will be bigger, better. It will be fitted with the VLS, capable of firing Tomahawk missiles. So yes, quite bigger armament.
