2:45 is a magical moment. Kiri is delivering inspired genius and... she takes her hair clip out! INCREDIBLE performances of the most inspired music of its kind...ever. Be SURE to see the clip with Lenny dressing down Jose... who walks out!
I love this - though I am not sure that its perfect. Not perfect in the sense that the style may not have completely suited this song, Kiri is who I mean. Yet I love this nevertheless.
Troyanos was a Goddess and this is the proof. The look in her eyes at the end is priceless - seldom do we really know when we've done it right, but here she knows. RIP!
I cannot stop watching Troyanos in these West Side Story videos. Her vocal flawlessness is one thing, but the passion and zest that she puts in every note is magnetic. Brilliant work from Bernstein casting her for this project. R.IP... what a star!
The whole Opera Musical theatre debate is very annoying. I can see why Bernstein used opera singers because the music is extrememly difficult to sing, it's almost Like opera really. So for tecnical perfection , it might be wiser to not use people who are exclusively actors

Benrstein was misguided in trying to make a classic version of "West Side Stofy". Putting together a dream cast does not necessarily make magic. The attempt to do it with "Follies" was nowhere as exciting as the original Broadway Cast. This pompous operatic version doesn't hold a candle to original with Chita Rivera and Carol Lawrence.
tatiana is excellent, I have been listening to this recording for 20+ years and nothing could beat it other than going back in time to see mozart with his arists

bitch please, dont give me that self righteous im a singer i know everything garbage, i write for voices all the time, sounding bad isnt part of charactarization, a bad singer is a bad singer. This is why i dont like musical theatre, in opera you have to sound good ALL the time.
dont be so rude! Maybe when you write something for 'voices' as good as this, we make take you seriously. Clearly, the singer was good enough for Bernstein, who quite obviously is a perfectionist.
Then, Sir...you clearly seem to know not very much about Musical Theatre! WSS clearly is a Musical with a very "Opera-Approach", that Bernstein wanted! These are fully classical trained Opera-Singers! I´ve just conducted a Production of WSS myself and I was very happy we had young, talented Musical-Theatre Professionals instead of Opera-Singers. Much better! Much more Honest! Much better transport of the Feelings of the Songs! In my Opinion, for Opera-Singers, this Recording is fabulous!
those faces are frightening. in kind of a good way though. i mean call of them lenny bernstein and the alto and soprano. they sound great though i dont think the operatic sweep of their voices would have been apropriate in a real production of WWS.
I Agree, I don't think operatic voices are fit in musicals. But, Bernstein himself chose this cast, so, they must be perfect according to the composer's point of view. Who are we to argue that?
Every single time I hear this performance the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. If this doesn't move you, you must be made of stone! Kiri & Tatiana we love you both x
I love these artists both! What a match up! THEE Countess from Le Nozze di Figaro and THEE Sesto from Clemenza di Tito. They are so amazing! What a historic event! Check out the Met production of Der Rosenkavalier with these two. Blew me away!!!!!!
..very sad to hear of Tatiana's passing..seems she was on loan from the gods for a short time only.. Do you see the expressions on Taniana's and Kiri's faces, from about 5 mins, 59 secs on .. so clearly quietly ecstatic with the fulfillment of their mission from the untouchable planet that Kiri speaks of at 34 secs .. what a privilege to behold ...
two amazing talents who have touched the lives of so many people

I disagree completely, this is music is modern classic and only trained voices could it justice. Bernsteins genius is it's relevant and classic.
These voices are perfect for this music.
It's Genius.

Watch your mouth.
She's not using all her voice because she's creating a character. You could never understand what kind of a sacrifice that is for a singer.
